Man that burst looks and sounds awesome.
You mentioned Jeff Beck. My Jeff story. I was on a bus going from Glasgow to London, early hours of the morning, dozing off to sleep with my head against the window and I saw a yellow Model T Ford moving alongside the bus. I looked down and saw the driver looking up at me, Jeff Beck ! I sat up in my seat and the car just sped off down the motorway. What a loss Jeff was to us all. One of the greatest ever.
Great to hang with you again Uncle Larry, love the bench videos.

A Canadian dude named Les Emmerson wrote "Signs". He had a band named "Emmerson's Five Man Electrical Band" who originally recorded the song in '71. After Tesla recorded it in '90, in '04 Fatboy Slim sampled the original '71 version, from this he was able to make a comfortable living without working in his later years.

Five Man Electrical Band. Not from California... but hailing from Ottawa Ontario Canada. Les Emerson was the singer/guitar player/songwriter. Dude could craft a song, no doubt about it.
Les actually came into my high school and gave a seminar to the music students on "Career Day." One of the things he told us: "If you think, even for a second, that you could be happy doing anything besides music as a career...then go do something else. But if you're all-in, it can be the most fulfilling job ever.
Decades later, I was the house guitarist at a big cancer benefit, and got to back Les up for a set (yes, we did Signs). After the show, I was chatting with Les, and reminded him of the advice he gave to our class all those years ago. He looks at me and says, "You stubborn bastard." He bust out laughing and gave me a big hug.
He passed a few years back (complications from COVID). I'm thankful for the limited time I got to hang with him.

  • @Aaron_Revis
    @Aaron_Revis 11 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +5

“The concept for Signs originated as Les Emmerson was driving down Route 66 in California. He became aware of the countless billboards and advertisements, which effectively blocked all views of the scenery. Emmerson viewed this as a metaphor for the obstacles that Five Man Electrical Band faced as they struggled to break into the music scene. The radical lyrics were also representative of the harsh social climate of the time.” - CHSF website (Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame)

Hello Uncle Larry my friend. I haven't watched this video yet but I just wanted to drop in and thank you so much for introducing me to Chuck Cannon. Oh my fucking god how did I live to be 71 years old without ever knowing about this cat! He speaks my language. You can sleep better tonight knowing that you turn one more soul on to his vibe.
I don't stop here at your school for every video like a lot of these dudes on here. I wish I had the time because you are one clued in dude, Tom. When I was a 13-year-old kid, even though you weren't born yet, I wanted to be you. I wanted your life. Now almost six decades later I realize that you can always get what you want as the stones said. Even so life is pretty fucking sweet, and it's made even more so by cats like you putting their soul on the internet for us lesser beings to check out and love. Keep up the good work Uncle Larry!

Such a beautiful '58 burst. I could stare at it all day. I don't know what it is about bursts, but they never seem to be able to make a reissue that looks right. There is always something "wrong." The new replicas of the '57 goldtop often look right. Very decent copies. But the burst replicas never do. You can tell a real one from a mile away.

We lived in the middle of nowhere just south of Jax Fl and a dude moved down from Athens and opened a really cool spot called Pizza Blue. Very alternative for 1990. They had an open mic on Thursday nights and it was always packed because there was just absolutely nothing where we lived. Some culture aside from the Little Champ.

The “melted plastic” is cool, but my favorite thing about an old electric guitar that your burst has is the sheen they have. It’s still shiny but it’s not super glossy. Time makes it look almost like a hand rubbed varnish and I just love the way it looks

The “Buk Burst” is bigger than all of us. Even just tightening up the strings, the thing is silly resonant. 😂. Thank you Uncle Larry

Tesla were a great band, and they're still great. I saw them play in the 80's and also a few years ago. When I started playing as a kid, they were my favorite band. My old teacher would figure out songs to teach me, and he liked when I'd bring Tesla songs to learn. As an adult, I know why. There's lots of 70's style guitar in their music, which is good for a kid to learn from.

The burst got popular because of the famous folks playing them in the 60's and 70's. Yours sounds great. The funny thing with any controversy over how much better they are is we are talking about minute nuances that (as previously discussed) alotta folks cant even hear. But we can

Imo, those famous folks played them because they recognized they’re good guitars, and people discerned how cool they sounded by appreciating the records those guys made.
Sometimes I think non-musicians who know their music can hear these things free of the biases we carry. I think they’d hear a great instrument being played in a room, point to the one that sounded the best and they’d probably be right. Just my two cents.

The 59 Les Paul debate should not exist after I just heard it from the 30 minute mark til the end of the video. Plugged straight in, it sounds like a perfect recording. Of course uncle Larry is playing with a lifetime of dynamics and control that let the true nature of this exquisite guitar shine through.

Unc, you gave me a mini lesson on 10 Years Gone forever ago at your store in Berry Hill. I was playing it checking out a guitar and next thing I know, you’re right behind me smiling and say “that’s f’ng great man! You know it’s supposed to be in drop D, right?” Then proceeded to play the bridge to make the point, saying “Jimmy Page; f’ng genius!”
Just a cool little memory I felt like sharing!

Less Emerson from the five man electrical band! Those guys hailed from my hometown, Ottawa Ontario. Growing up in Ottawa in the 90s/2000s “signs “still received regular AirPlay on classic rock radio when I was a kid. It’s a great song indeed. My dad was involved in the local music scene in the late 60s and early 70s. He speaks fondly of the band “the staccatos” that eventually became “the five man electrical band “. I have quite a few drummer buddy friends who took lessons with their drummer. Les Emerson ended up passing away in 2021 but he performed practically right up until the end of his life.

Wow. Uncle Larry, just heard your statement about Back In The Saddle by Aerosmith. Fuck yes, agree 100%. I've blabbed about this song for years to my buds. They always say what about Walk This Way, Sweet Emotion, that Sing Women ballad thing, etc. Nope, its Back In The Saddle Again. As always love your posts. The bench stuff is great. Keep em coming. My very favorite TH-cam channel. But hey, why is it Homeskoolin 501chorusecho. Is it time for a name change? Homeskoolin with Uncle Larry? Homeskoolin Rides Again?
