We had a 66 Landau and Dad didn’t have to put in neutral to start. Also the seat swivels 90 degrees to the left to let you out. It was and is one cool car!
@@craigjorgensen4637 I guess my memory is getting too old. The wheel did move to the right, warning lights above, eight track stereo, front fender turn lights and sequential turn lights. It was super cool even today.😎
The slide away steering is probably slightly out of adjustment. If you pull up a little on the gear shift lever while turning the key it will kick right over. Not an uncommon problem, and only a slight irritation.
Rick Greenway True! They started in park! The trouble was those used sloppy linkages that were constantly getting out of adjustment. People had to hold the shifter in odd positions or the starter wouldn’t engage. Worse yet, when put In gear the parking brake would release automatically! If left to idle in neutral they would sometimes jump into reverse. At fast idle, they would take off in reverse! They ate front end parts and cornered like a cruise ship! Great looking cars but troublesome. The dealership mechanics hated working on them!
The battery turn off also helped to prevent the car from being stolen. Not many people would think the battery has an off switch when they are trying to jimmy the ignition. My dad always disconnected the battery when he was parked some place over night. His car got broken into but never stolen.
A roadster has wire wheels and tonneau cover. I think about 50 factory roadsters were made in 64.They had leftover parts from 64 and you could have a dealer install them in 65 and 66, I think....
I think this is an aftermarket add on to deter car thieves. If a car thief wanted the car they just pop the hood (no inside hood release )turn the knob and away they go.A dedicated car thief would know about these shutoff switches....
Will be very disappointed if the very lucky new owner does not join the Antique Automobile Club of America. And wish I was not buried in the restoration of my '36 Olds L-36 and 40 Cadillac 60S. Would be so nice to have an antique we could actually drive and show with a chance of taking home a trophy
The Sports Roadster was only built in 1962 and 63. You'll notice the title only say Roadster, meaning convertible. Sometimes sales people just don't know what they are talking about. If this car won't start in park it's because the neutral switch is out of adjustment. However I'd be willing to bet if he held up on the shifter while turning the key it would start perfectly. I have no idea why he seems to thing that early T-Birds only started in neutral. And btw it's called "slide away steering column" not tilt steering.

The definitive proof agaist the "...they all start in neutral..." comment: The parking brake release is automatic, if you take it out of park it releases the parking brake. Absolutely wrong that that car only starts in neutral, it means there's something wrong with the neutral safety switch. The car is supposed to start up while it's in park. Starting a car up and high revving the motor is absolutely the worst thing that you can do for the engine
1 of the top most beautifully styled cars ever made.
The styling on those old school T Birds was off the charts.
Love late 50's early 60' American cars. Wish I still had my 59 Buick :-(

It actually should start in park
Cars had a 5 digit odometer in those days. Unless it is documented it could show 49000 miles and actually be 149000 or more, so buyer beware.
