Ive never listened to this and i was silently sloppy crying the whole way through while my partner was asleep next to me. My pillow is soaked. This is something else.
@@abasement666this just reminded me that the first time i ever listened to this album at the end of ravens i had to stop because i just sobbed for 15 minutes straight
I audibly said “OH NO” out loud when the notification popped up, this man is about to feel the hurt Edit: amazing review, really glad you powered through and appreciated this work of art for what it is but I feel so bad for you man, you were beaming and snacking away on goldfish at the start lmao PLEASE listen to something happy and uplifting next 🙏🏼
All jokes aside, thank you so much for approaching this experience earnestly and sharing it with us. This is one of the most powerful albums I've ever heard, but it's truly devastating. Thank you for not trying to run from or diminish that power, but for facing it head-on. I think it's as raw an artistic exploration of death as there's ever been.
The line in Soria Moria “I went back to feel alone there” is a reference to a song he wrote 15 years before. He wrote that song after a breakup about going back to places they had been before. To me, referencing that song with the audible emotion in his voice suggests losing Genevieve has completely recontextualised his past relationships and feelings of loss. It was touring that old album that he met Genevieve for the first time. That feeling of loss at the old relationship led him to find true love, and then to feel true loss.
yo smags appreciate the fact that you stuck through it and its a great reaction and analysis. you've mentioned in previous videos that you've had some issues with mental health before and like if there's ever a time that like a reaction is too much or a record seems like its gonna be too much to listen to then like dont put yourself through it for our sake. mental health is important. keep your head up!
I still haven't gotten around to even finishing this album. It's just too heavy. The images he puts down are so raw it's easy to put yourself in his shoes and see your own loved one's lost. It hurts.
This is one of the most brilliantly devastating album I have ever listened to and by far the saddest. I think it is the singlemost important album on grief. And I never want to listen to it again.
I understand this perspective, but I think it's also just a good time for when feeling like feeling sad, a very reliable performer. Plus the songs are good! But maybe not everyone's cup of tea as a regular listening experience.
Hey Smags! I just found your channel recently and even though i usually don't subscribe to reaction channels, i have to say that the sheer width and honesty of your reactions made me so eager to see more. I've been dying to see reviews and reactions of albums that people dont's usually listen to on youtube, whivh makes your channel perfect for me! I assume your list of albums to listen to is pretty stacked already, but i'd love it if you concider taking a dive into the band Bloc Party. Their old stuff was mainly post-punk revival, but they stretch from that, to pop, to a wbole bunch of other things like genre-mashing. Their album "Silent alarm" is a must-hear, and the song "Helicopter" on that record is genuinely my favourite song of all time. Love the content so far and can't wait to see more!
timestamps!! real death - 1:00 seaweed - 3:22 ravens - 5:21 forest fire - 9:21 swims - 11:44 my chasm - 14:35 when i talk out the garbage at night - 16:30 emptiness, pt.2 - 18:17 toothbrush/trash - 20:11 soria moria - 22:46 crow - 25:49 i love this album, its so beautifully tragic and its an experience to say the least. his other album Winds Poem is also really good but overall all of his work is beautiful. kinda cool to be listening to all these albums again with someone the same age as me!! loved the reaction and hope you react to more of his stuff!!
Evening friends! In today's episode of "What happened today?" I'm gonna tell you about an experience I had with a crow. So basically, up on *mount eerie* , there is a large tree. As the madlad I am, I was obviously chilling in the branches, listening to fart sounds, enclosed in a ball of leaves, through which only the bravest rays of light pass. This was a huge base for all the birds in the area, but thankfully, they didn't mind my infiltration. That's what i thought atleast. All of a sudden, I saw a dark bird atop one of the branches. It was a crow. Guys... *A crow looked at me* . The only thing I had on my mind in that moment was: "Run". And so I did. I did a quadruple backflip off the branch on the wavy grass steppe standing on the mountaintop, and I booked it. Quite a shocking story I must say! Also good reaction as always Mr. Consistent!
you should check out Two airships/Exploder falls by Candy claws! quick listen, only a half hour album with just two songs. incredible dense shoegaze/noise pop. infectious melodies, one of the happiest albums i’ve ever heard.
this album is so haunting. phil is my favorite artist of all time and according to lastfm i’m in the top 10 listeners by number of plays for mount eerie, but i think i’ve only heard this record in full maybe two or three times over the years. it’s just too painful. if you want a less gut wrenching but still beautiful experience i’d recommend his earlier album “No Flashlight” which expands upon a lot of the stuff you hear on the glow pt.2 with a more philosophical lens. there’s also the mount eerie record that the microphones put out, which acts as a sequel to the glow pt.2 and a transition to the new pseudonym
Wow, you really do react to great music. I don’t think anyone fully recovers from “A Crow Looked At Me”. It’s like dipping your toes into a pool of someone else’s depression, but you feel the lingering effects of their torment 😭
Went into this album knowing it was heartbreaking but there was nothing that could have prepared me for it. Especially since my mother went through a similar thing with my father, he passed away when i was 2 and a 1/2 and she got stuck with so much at once
i think this album is best experienced listening without looking at lyrics (unless you're not that good at understanding english), the impact of the lines and stories hit so much harder when you don't see them coming beforehand
The feeling you get while listening to this album. It's kind of nostalgic to me as I'd felt it everyday for years🤣. I guess it's a good reminder that I'm not exactly there anymore most days at least.
You should listen to Figure 8 by Elliott Smith or Station to Station by David Bowie. Idk if you would like them but they are both there peak artistry in my opinion.
I found this album about four years after I lost my cousin to Fentanyl. And at the time I was still in denial and would shift back and forth between acceptance and this sort of unfiltered anger towards the world. Phil Elverum helped me come to terms with reality and I will never speak to the man. And that is why he is my personal pick for greatest songwriter ever. Just the ability to put someone into his situation on this album is a massive undertaking. But as well, he allows you to find your own story in it at times. Just horribly painful sounds in the best way possible.
Must also mention how he was able to accomplish the same, “tell his own story, but comfort and relate to you at the same time”, on The Glow, Pt.2. That album has equally saved me from my own brain and thoughts.
The madman he actually did it. Amazing Here's some recommendations: Oneohtrix point never - R plus seven Slowmotion livestream - A statue in front of the devil Tim hecker - Ravedeath 1972

There's another reference in the album somewhere I can't remember exactly what or where though

You have some of the most consistent and quality commentary in this niche youtube genre. I respect the grind, keep it up you're gonna blow up

“i can’t do this bro I need some goldfish”
i think the abrupt ending is representative of how abrupt and sudden someone such as his wifes life can come to an end
Can you please listen to `The microphones in 2020` its like the resolution/update to this. Also its so good.

Listen to Stage Four by Touche Amoré. Similar thematics, it's about the singer's mother's death due to cancer, but the music is post-hardcore
