I've been shooting black and white only for around a year-and-a-half now and totally relate to so many of the points you brought up here. Made me smile when you mentioned The Lighthouse, one of my favorite films and uses B&W so beautifully. Thanks for another great video!
Great inspirations! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. Can't wait to see what you do with the full year of photos once fully processed and reviewed.
Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it a lot! :) I still have around 20 rolls to develop and even more to scan... so it will take me some time but I am more than excited to see all there is! ☺️
I wasn't familiar with Ara Güler before but just looked him up - fantastic work! Thanks for sharing. And good luck with your 30-day experiment, sounds great! :)
I have shot 99% black and white for the last ten years. I think if anyone is only shooting color they should really try it (for a time like you did) as it helps you to forget about color and think about composition. For me color can often distraction when I am shooting. Obviously this depends on what you are shooting and what your goal is. Karin, If you like the light house for inspiration, please see the 1968 film Kuroneko directed by Kaneto Shindo. This black and white film has been a huge inspiration to me.
Great video and thank you for sharing your inspiration with us. Where I live, the weather is black and white for like 6 months :D so black and white film is the way to go :)
Just found your channel and I am inspired to shoot in black and white film. I was going through my gear and found an old film SLR that I had forgotten about. Put in some new batteries and it seems to work fine. Some Ilford Delta 400 is on order. Thanks for the inspiration. It’s just so easy to shoot a memory card full of images and discard most of them while film forces you to slow down and get back to the basics of exposure, depth of field and creating a story in only 24 or 36 photos.
You‘ve summarized the beauty of (b&w) film photography very well. I would add that the haptics/ handling and sounds of these vintage cameras are a joy, too. Have a great time shooting film.
Excellent video … thanks! My Fuji X100V is always set to Acros+R and raw … so I’m shooting pretty much exclusively in monochrome although the occasional iPhone snaps are still in colour. I only recently acquired my first photo book despite the fact that I’ve been taking film and digital photos for well over fifty years … bought a new copy of Michael Kenna’s book “Photographs & Stories”. Minimalist landscape photography is my principal interest so naturally I follow aows amongst other YT B&W photographers. 📷😄
Thanks so much for your comment, I appreciate it! :) When I still had my Fuji X100V, the Acros simulation was also one of my favourites ever. Have fun with your entry into the photo book world! With photo books it's similar to cameras... they will accumulate over time haha.
Another practical tip I found helped me to shoot more black and white is to shoot indoors.Black and white looks very good in more contrasting lighting. compositions come out very interesting with areas of highlights and deep shadows. Somethings low contrast outdoor scenes need color to make something stand out
I recently got the Nikon Zf. I used the external switch to change to B&W stills and have only taken B&W for the last week. I'm trying to reach 30 days and have already noticed how much I have previously relied on color in my photos. Your video is well timed to help me reach my 30 days.
Thanks for your comment! I have to admit that I don't follow along the news on the digital camera market too closely but the Nikon Zf is definitely one of the few cameras that has caught my attention recently. So cool to hear that you challenge yourself with it shooting more black and white. Keep on going, you can do it! :)
I've never heard about the Moriyama's documentary. Also, I'm always puzzled when I hear from photographers that they either need a "reason", an inspiration, an incentive (wink wink Kodak C41 prices) to stoop to, sorry, commit to black and white. As if it were not both the foundation of photography and a contemporary and relevant way to express yourself. Ironically I'm doing the opposite these last months : after a decade where I was 90% B&W / 10% color, I've started to shoot more color since I'm doing more and more color darkroom printing.
Wonderful video! I am a HUGE fan of Daido Moriyama. It's very interesting that he cares so little about camera gear yet has elevated 3 cameras to cult status. The Olympus Pen W (half-frame film camera). The Ricoh GR-1 (35mm film camera), and the Nikon Coolpix S7000 (digital point-and-shoot). His style has remained the same for over 50 years.
The Lighthouse is my favorite movie right now. Its an amazing movie, they really built a 70 ft lighthouse for the movie lol the collectors edition has a mini zine in the booklet with B&W photography and it is really awesome to see, including some very nice headshots
Moryama is one of my absolute favourites too. The exhibition in Berlin last year was great. I highly recommend getting the catalog from the exhibition as long as it is available. The prints are very high quality. It’s simply called „A Retrospective“. Off topic: it includes some colour shots.❤
Sadly I missed the exhibition at CO in Berlin last year. Still bummed about it :( But getting the catalog at least might be a little consolation at least. Thanks for your comment! :)
When you said you envy photographers who have found their distinctive *look*, I felt that 💯. That's probably my biggest struggle, and part of it is fed by my love of lots of different styles and genres. I've yet to want to give up everything else to specialize in one area - I'm not a specialist, I'm a generalist by definition. I like doing lots of different things and I'm frustrated that the advice of most photographers is to narrow in on one area and just do that. I get that they're probably right, and for a single project I think consistency absolutely makes sense. I just don't want to do only one thing. 😅 Also, I love my Flexispot desk. I got it during a promotion and it was a true bargain. It's got great build quality and has my full confidence to support two computers and 3 screens. I'd not considered their chairs but I've been shopping around since my Aeron chair is showing its age and I'm ready for something new. I'll check out the FS chair.

If I'm out to take pictures, I require to use a wheelchair. This actually has the advantage, that I can take a lot of gear with me.
