I appreciate being able to see the actual construction and mechanics of building something. Too many of the pond videos I have found just talk about their project without showing the nuts and bolts of it so it can be replicated. Thanks!
I absolutely love how clear you are AND that you listed everything in the video description! We've been planning a pond with bog filter and hope to have it done next Spring. Thank you!!
Hi Kev Great idea can’t wait to see more I’ve just finished a week of digging so getting ready to do the wood work next for my sleeper pond then I can crack on with my bog filter 👍
Very clear and appreciate the diagrams! I have a very sandy property (white sugar sand) in sub tropical mid Florida. I had a contractor dig an 8x12x4 kidney pond hole and use the sand to elevate a gravel driveway 3' away. The driveway is a good 6' above the bottom of the pond bottom. Water flows into the pond but since I'm not lined yet but the sand absorbs it. I'd love to do something like this but gravity fed but also solar pump filter fed to collect and filter rainwater. I'm thinking something to collect sediment I can clean out once a month. We got 6" of rain in June , but we get only 1" in January. My idea is that the pond is always full but also recycled/purged with fresh rain and a 24x7 solar pump keeps it filtered and aerated. To do this I would need my inlet to be from the top, possibly multi staged.
I have been using a similar(half a whiskey barrel) filter set up for years. But I use pea gravel for the media. So I will be very interested in your clean out method !! I normally have to remove and wash media once a year manually. Which is a bit of a pain !!
Great video. 😊 Wondering what to do with the pond liner in the waterfall near the filter. Usually the liner is attached to the front of the bio falls. What does it look like when placed, is it attached to the barrel waterfall filter or filter sitting on top of it or?
This filter actually sat inside the liner. I know there’s a video somewhere of me installing it (can’t remember the title, might be the stream build). It’s hidden by plants, rock and some small logs. Can barely see it now.
Great videos you are doing a wonderful job kev I have a 4000 g pond what size barrel should I use and the number of bio balls ? I guess a 4000g/h pump should be enough?
Love this. CURIOUS, if your Native Fish pond needs more flow... I mean, I agree the bog filter needs less water movement, but do you think the active pond should have one of these as well to help with pond sediment removal?
It’s something that could certainly be done. But of course more flow from a pump means more watts, which means more energy consumption. The southern Pygmy perch also prefer slow moving waters so the pond with slow moving bog is perfect for them. But yes sediment and debris does need to be removed more often in this pond than say the aquascape pond which has three times the flow rate in a smaller area.
Hi Kev, How did you hid the top of this setup. You Bog filter barrel setup has plants and small rocks on top. Did you disguise the bio bag & rock with a lid or something?
Hey there, question. You reckon this would work if I connected the outflow pipe of the filter to a waterfall spillway? The wide ones for pools. Or do you think that would cause flooding or other issues? Just toying with the idea
Hi Kev. How is it these Biofalls style filters are able to work with high flows? We know (thanks to you 👍) how important a slow flow rate is in a bog filter, so how does a biofalls filter achieve the same job with higher flows? Cheers.
These videos on pond filtration are really useful and fantastic I made a filter for my 4000 gallon pond with 16000 lph pump but still havent been able to see crystal clear water, i used a 200 ltr barrel with pebbles, 200 bioballs, a layer of activated carbon and layer of ceramic rings. Is this good enough to clear the pond?
All my personal filters have open tops. But it’s the bacteria doing the work, so you can have closed tops, just remember filters need cleaning from time to time.
Kev.. all I can say is THANK YOU!!! I replicated and built this pond filter and can testify that it works! I am amazed how crystal clear my water is now after installing it 4 weeks ago (8-3-2024). The only thing I added was a lid, extra layer of filters due to the height of my container and used lava rocks instead. I have taken before and after photos I would love to share with everyone but I am not youtube savvy. Thank you for sharing your valuable knowledge and expertise with the world🙂
This one was very helpful for me, I thank you. I bought a very large container, yet maybe I really don't need it to be so big, as hiding it is important for me. Your instructions were really clear. I would like a big enough pump to feed a waterfall and the filter at the same time. As there is no where to hide the filter above the starting location. I suppose there are big enough pumps? Also the media for the filter has been hard to find here in Sweden, ponds aren't that popular here. Will follow your awesome work 🙏👍😁
Thanks Stephen, glad you’ve found it helpful. This filter can easily accept 15000 litres per hour. In a coming video you’ll get to see how I disguise it so it’s not visible. In regards to the filter media you can use anything that will stay wet and not degrade over time. Some people use plastic bottle tops. Good luck with your project 👍
Hey Kev, bare with me on this idea… would it be possible to have a large pump with a diverter/splitter attached. One path from diverted line will have reduced water flow and would go to the bog so it can filter properly. The second diverted water line would feed into the same reservoir where the Bog’s output goes to. Then the reservoir would spill into the pond creating a water fall. I hope this made sense, but would this idea work?
Oh good! This is the same thing I’ve been thinking about. Thank you, Kev, for your educational videos- I’ve watched them all, I think, and just got all the stuff to add a bog to our swimming hole.
Hi man, I'm trying to sort it out if I can build natural swimming pool. The pool is going to be between 30.000 liter big. I can have some plans in 2 square meter but no more then that. I have big hill near to the pool. That's why i wonder if i can use high flow filter for filtration. Is it possible to clear water? Do you have any idea how big the filter should be?
This filter became the start of the stream in my dream pond. This video I think shows the construction of the stream. DIY Stream, Creek| Dream pond build th-cam.com/video/dG55DXTUu1o/w-d-xo.html
No. The bio ball kinda is the filter. It provides the surface area for nitrifying bacteria. The more bacteria, the more powerful the filter. The more surface area, the more habitat for bacteria.
Hi Kev. Loving these videos and all the advice. I know this filter is for the waterfall and separate from the bog filters, but why did you not use rocks and pebbles? That is to say, why the use of the bio balls and filter mat?
Yes you could and then fit more bioballs in. But this is plenty big enough. The idea was that it holds as many bioballs as an aquascape biofalls. Half barrel is easier to hide.
Yes but I prefer that in a slow moving bog filter (you’ll see I often use it in those filters). This filter has water moving through very fast. In this case the sponges and bio balls are more effective as filter media.

Hey there, question. You reckon this would work if I connected the outflow pipe of the filter to a waterfall spillway? The wide ones for pools. Or do you think that would cause flooding or other issues? Just toying with the idea
Yeah I’m not sure. It should work as long as you don’t need to reduce the outlet pipe to much.
Hi Kev. How is it these Biofalls style filters are able to work with high flows? We know (thanks to you 👍) how important a slow flow rate is in a bog filter, so how does a biofalls filter achieve the same job with higher flows? Cheers.
It doesn’t achieve the same job. It will leave nitrate.

If the water isn’t clear, then the filtration in inadequate. Need more surface area for bacteria.
Adding one more barrel would make it hard to hide 2 barrels, what best can be done would you suggest ?
You could try decreasing the number of fish.
Hello, I one of your video you said that you can use regular foam instead of black foam for fixing the stones, is it ok for the fish?
No problem
hey man, great video, would this work just as good if the pipe going from the pump to the filter was just a standard 20mm wide hose pipe? cheers
Sure so long as the pump doesn’t require a bigger pipe, that’s no problem. 👍
Love your pond filters! Do any of your dyi filters work with a closed top rather than an open top filter? I live in the US in a subtropical climate

Hi can I use this on an above ground pool conversion into a pond.
If you don’t really plan on swimming in it. Would be fine for a fish pond.

I think bog filtration is best (but there’s lots of ways to filter water). If pool is 30,000 litres I’m looking to create a filter at 6-8,000 litres.

Hey mate, just wanna ask why you use bioballs instead of rocks for this filter?
Higher flow, smaller filter size.
Would you recommend bio balls with a filter inside or not thanks
This one has bioballs and sponges.
sorry I wasnt very clear. do bio balls have filters in them@@Ozponds
No. The bio ball kinda is the filter. It provides the surface area for nitrifying bacteria. The more bacteria, the more powerful the filter. The more surface area, the more habitat for bacteria.
Pretty funny..."choice words" and "calm down from the ordeal". You must have seen me work before.
😂
What kind of pump did you use in this tutorial?
I’m using the 15000 model- amzn.to/48Erd2H
Hi Kev. Loving these videos and all the advice. I know this filter is for the waterfall and separate from the bog filters, but why did you not use rocks and pebbles? That is to say, why the use of the bio balls and filter mat?
Just because the flow is too much. The rocks and pebbles would potentially restrict the flow of water, which would put back pressure in the pump.
@@Ozponds Cheers
Why barrel in half? Isn’t beter do use the whole barrel for more filter volume?
Yes you could and then fit more bioballs in. But this is plenty big enough. The idea was that it holds as many bioballs as an aquascape biofalls. Half barrel is easier to hide.
Are bio balls actually good?
For high flow situations, absolutely 👍.
