crazy fight, felt the heartbreak with you. hope you get your redemption pablo. didnt think that bluefin would have a second wind after almost a 2 hour battle!
At least he's got a great story to tell others. Actually, even better.. t's documented by cousin Jim! Great video! Pablo will get his redemption sooner than later.
That pig worked that Fathom! First honest meltdown on that reel I have seen! My nighttime rigs are an Avet 30w and a Penn international 16. Both hot rodded by Cal and his son Erik at Cal Sheets! I am truly sorry for that loss.
All the comments could of did this , I would of did that ,lol good job Pablo. the tuna won wow that's a big fish 300 minimal to 350 maybe 400 who knows, I run a 20visx minimum to a 50visx heavy but will take on the beast. Set your drag correctly with a drag scale
wow, heartbreak at tuna town. great job just overmatched. get the Mak but look hard at the 20. easier to handle than the 50 and plenty of drag. wow that was an epic battle.
I don't know, I own that same fathom 60 and so do many others. Maybe the drag wasn't set properly, or the fish was over 400. You guys were also reeling mostly on the rail without leveraging up and reeling on the way down. Good fight though🤙
Yep. Judging by the bend on that rod, I have a feeling the drags were set way too light. An hour is way too long. You gotta set the drag using a scale. That last run may have been a shark eating his tuna. Hope Pablo gets em next time.
@@lbsurfninja I just saw that, yup. Drag was backed out before strike. Sometimes they accidentally get backed out fighting the fish. Deckhands should have caught that.
@@cousinjim1 Most of the time its not being fished like a true 100lb reel. That reel isnt even a real 80lb reel, its a 60lb to light 80lb reel at most. The bearings, drag, and frame are very underbuilt, its a medium frame reel. A VISX 16 or even Makaira 16 would have killed that fish in half the time, they are much beefier reels made for the abuse, the fathom is not. Im pretty sure the reel started to bind which likely caused the failure.
@@fadelover123 Penn rep told me that fathom 60 definitely isn't a 100# reel. It's 80# at most And that's pushing it. It's meant for more line capacity and not bigger line size. Any visx, talica, saltiga LD, makaira would have handled that tuna in half the time.
thanks for the insight I hope to make the best videos possible it is tough to cut 8 hours to about 12 minutes but I will try and reduce the talking when I get a camera person then a lot of the action can speak for itself. Thanks for watching lets see how this evolves together Tight Lines Cousin Jim
The VISX is heavier built than the makairas, they have more frame material and a more reliable anti reverse. This guy was fishing a medium frame fathom like a makaira or visx, it was not a drag failure, the bearings started to bind due to all the stress and all the line being ripped off.
Looks like it could have been a rental rod from the landing. That reel has probably caught more fish than most would catch in years. The fathoms are pretty proven. But trust me I also just added a VISX 16 this year
For a 100lb outfit I would definitely use Shimano talica 25 2 speed, penn 30vis 2 speed, 50vis okuma makiara 30 2 speed, 50 makiara 2 speed always go heavy on fish over 100lb.
Nothing wrong with Penn Fathoms. He could have been hooked up to a 300 pound plus tuna in which he would have needed a better reel such as a Penn VSX, Accurate, Avet 50w, etc. Tough loss. Wish we could have seen him.
Tough break!Next time Pablo👍🎣✌
he catches lots of tuna this one was just a monster
Wow!
you should have been there

Have a good fishing 👍thanks for good video sharing
Pablo brought a knife to a gun fight
Yes he did LOL
He really ate his words from the beginning when he was talking about his gear 😂
yes a three hundred pounder will do that
Knowing there are 100lb bluefin out there. Why are so many anglers not fishing?
Once the boat drifts of the school or the school moves on there is not much of a chance to get a bite good question tight lines
Epic fight...
Yes it was
That was a battle. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it part 3 soon

Yes he will and he knows it
Tight lines
We are taking about an entry level Penn 2 speed. He needed the Torque or International.
We know that now! Tight Lines
@Blueskies My big rig is only an Okuma Makaira 16 on PCH rod 40-80# 7'

heart breaking
Yes but a lifetime of memories
@@cousinjim1 how many pounds do you think it was?
That video just convinced me not to buy a fathom thanks 💯 Jim!!
Just too big of a fish for it they are still good reels
Wow man what a bummer ending! Was routing for Pablo to get that hog in the boat
We all were he told me he has a couple other trips planned this year I think he’ll get it

Penn Fathom drag cooked. How disappointing.
these things do happen it just shows how powerful these fish are tight lines
Send that reel to Cal custom reels ,they can up grade that drag .
hope Pablo sees this
3 cows I lost with 80. 100. And 130 pound leader. Crazy
When these fish can reach gigantic weight, you never know for sure what you will hook
@@cousinjim1 yessir. We came back with a 130 pounder so we are grateful we get to use that fish. Will be out there again in October

Thats what happens when you use a medium frame reel for 100lb.
Most of the time that is more than enough reel. Pablo just hooked a sea monster!

Fathom 40?
That looks like 60
I believe Pablo said it was a 60
Pablo said he still has full faith in the Penn Fathom he just hooked an extra large tuna
I have a fathom 40 and it wont produce 15lbs of drag. good enough for smaller grade but not the big boys. you need 20lbs minimum 30 is better.
