    AirshowStuff would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Marines of VMA-223 including CO Lt Col. Nate Smith and XO Maj. Ross Armstrong as well as 2nd Lt. John Graham from the 2MAW Public Affairs Office for their support during our visit.

    Feels kinda crazy that the Marines have been using the Harrier since the very early 1970s. It's one of those planes that's honestly timeless, since you can find images with the prototype XV-6A/P.1127 from all the way back in the early-mid 1960s, but also find images of the last AV-8B+s going into 2024.

    As a British Aeronautical Engineer living in the US, I am very proud to see the best of our original Harrier design refined to the AV-8B. Wish I had the chance to visit this Squadron at Cherry Point. The original V/STOL fighter, may not be supersonic like the F-35, but it is amazing for close air support and Tank Busting !!!

    Excellent video, as a brit, I love the Harrier great export, and it's sad it doesn't fly over here anymore, so it's always nice to see it. Many thanks 😊

    This is pretty good, I just hope you don't start moving too far away from the airshow stuff, it's what I'm here for and not stock footage.

      It was supposed to be a lot more original footage, but our base visit didn't really turn out that way. We are hoping to return next year though for some REALLY cool stuff if it works out :)

    Love that scene in the movie were there hovering in side the floors of the sky scrapers. They learned how to fly them on the simulators and they beat the aliens. Can't remember the name of the movie but is stared Jon Travolta.

    The TAV-8B was mentioned, and the one shown had the tail code KD, which belongs ("belonged"?) to VMAT-203. The narration said that VMA-223 was operating the TAV-8B's... is this correct? This certainly would be change from how these squadrons have operated since the AV-8B was introduced.

    • @AirshowStuffVideos
      @AirshowStuffVideos  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes it's correct, VMAT-203 is no more and VMA-223 inherited the TAV-8s to get the last pilots through training. We were told the final four students are in the pipeline right now then the training mission will wrap up.

    • @SkyhawkSteve
      @SkyhawkSteve 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@AirshowStuffVideos Thanks for the feedback! If the Corps has to keep some Harriers active, then it makes sense to maintain a small training capability too. But why is the Harrier still in service?? Are they still waiting to receive more F-35s?

    • @johnosbourn4312
      @johnosbourn4312 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're correct, the TAV-8Bs are only flown by VMAT-203, whereas the single seaters are only flown by the combat coded squadrons, so the narrator must've gotten the squadrons mixed up.

    • @johnosbourn4312
      @johnosbourn4312 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SkyhawkSteveYes, the Corps is getting more F-35Bs, but, they can't just stop flying the Harrier so suddenly without the replacement aircraft coming into the squadrons right away, so that's why the Harrier is still active for now. After next year, the AV-8B will be fully retired, as more F-35Bs are delivered by Lockheed-Martin.

    • @AA-xo9uw

      @@johnosbourn4312 Incorrect. VMAT-203 was decommissioned in October of 2021.

    I haven't seen one of these at an airshow since the late 90's. I will add the Cherry Point airshow to my list for sure. At 9:40 what are those dinosaurs doing in the background? Any chance they will be at the airshow as well?

      The forward fuselage and wing were built by McDonnell Douglas, and the rear fuselage was made by BAE. The engine is from Rolls Royce, of course. Final assembly was in St. Louis at McDonnell Douglas... or at least was when I was working there and watching the forward fuselage and wing being assembled in Building 101.

    Someone needs to educate that Harrier pilot. What he describes with the nozzles being halfway back is the STOL part of V/STOL, also the Harrier isn't the only game in town for V/STOL any more.
