While I don’t vibe with Sal on Ultimates #6, I appreciate his honesty. Personally, I interpreted this issue as being the first loss the team’s faced in the field (the only other one you could maybe count is the failure of Tony and Doom’s plan of sending the hero loot boxes back in time) and a send up of Shonen manga. I feel like their failure here is meant to be a learning moment and set-up for their succeeding against Hulk later on (possibly in issue #12?). The attacks, from their names to their being scaled in Hiroshimas, feel like gamma themed moves you’d see in Naruto or Dragon Ball. Which is why I can see Sal being on a different wavelength from the common consensus because, as I understand from passing comments made over the years, he’s not really that big into anime when a lot of younger readers really love that sort of stuff and would logically love it in here where he didn’t. Also, I’m pretty sure Tony will be fine given his presence on upcoming covers and She-Hulk’s hand is regenerating on the last page. Again, I’m not posting to change or criticize Sal’s opinion, I just wanted to share my perspective and some ideas as to why it didn’t gel as much for him.
wow, i thought he would like this issue of ultimates, I loved it, this book is one of the best of the year, but it seems like the comic is too inconsistent for him. My only criticism would be that they should have shown more damage in each area, so when they ranked the attacks according to hiroshimas it would look cooler.
Ultimate Hulk is a good twist. Overall I liked the concepts in this book. The concepts introduced are glossed over due to Hickman's overall storytelling in the Ultimate Universe. It felt like Sal forgot that each issue time jumps a month, so each issue doesn't fill in the blanks or according to Sal "inconsistent". A bit harsh if you call the storytelling "dumb", in my opinion.
Honestly fair point on ultimates. I’ve been enjoying each issue but seeing it all come together was a little disjointed. There also wasn’t a ton going on aside from the fight, like you could say the same for the Hawkeye issue but there’s still more plot going on there. I’m also kinda confused on the day to day of the ultimates, are all those characters hanging out until they have missions or do some of them still have secret identities? Still digging the book overall, excited for more
I gotta disagree with you on Ultimates #6 I do understand your points and they are fair but I feel the Ultimates is making the most progression in terms of the world in contrast to the other titles. I also don’t think you’re stupid for your opinions, I do think the name of the fighting moves were dumb but in a very fun kinda way, no less dumb then “flying crane kick” Like Absolute Batman’s chest being a axe is dumb as hell but it’s also really awesome I don’t see the wasp reference was a “F-you” in any way but more of just a reference haha
I wholly disagree with you on ultimates. The entire point of Buddhist hulk is the fact that it’s commentary on the cheap veneer of “peace” that is paved over violence, control, and subjugation
That’s the great thing about art its subjective. I loved absolute Superman. Felt like a fresh take on the Superman mythos. I thought the dialogue was heavy as well but it instilled that his mom and dad often talked like that in front of kal. Instilling those ideals in him from a very young age. Didn’t see the don’t trust the experts angle as his parents were both experts in there fields lol beatiful art
I think She-Hulk losing her hand is a shout out to the Secret Wars cover that makes it look like Hawkeye's arrow is a stabby hand replacing her right. Arthur Suydam did a similar shout out for a Marvel Zombies cover. Buddhists aren't always pacifists my brother, they've been on high tensions with a faith from the Middle East for years. Monks don't often drop a mf, but they will and you will see it spring up in the news from time to time. I remember early teen years being dumbfounded by a headline about Monks mercing some folks and that was during the Bush II administration. Looking at a headline from Myanmar from this September describing a Buddhist village massacring a Muslim residence. Issue 3 is when Ant Man and The Wasp are introduced. I'm not saying that takes away from your opinion, just some background info for what it may be worth.
I loved Absolute Superman, but I definitely got the same vibe Sal got with the anti-coastal elite subtext. We'll see where that goes. I'm super hyped for this series nonetheless.
@@johnthai6188 Oh I definitely saw that in the text as well. The Science Clergy on Krypton is so dogmatic they outright punish any who question them; we should always challenge our leaders and eschew these rigid power structures. Its just that the scene in the Redlands midway thru the book came across more like the city-mouse vs country-mouse trope, which I am sooo over with. I might be reading too much into it, but I'm just tired of "city folk = automatic snob" cliche.
Disappointed ultimates #6 wasnt liked. Having read ultimate invasion, this hulk is consistent with: i have inner peace, but i use violence against you. But as much as i love camp, he doesnt seem to able to do subtle. Like it or not, it just felt a bit harsh compared to the coverage of batman, of which i found less enjoyable
My one big criticism so far of the Absolute line is that none of them feel like they take place in the same universe, there's no hint of Lazarus or the Peacemakers in Batman despite Gotham also being on Earth but it seems like theyre meant to be the dominant force even in the US
I'm sure they'll have some sort of connection beginning to appear as the stories advance. These are "brand new" characters and it makes sense for them to have all the spotlight at the beginning.
Glad to hear I wasn’t the only one who didn’t love that issue of ultimates, I much preferred the America issue or the Hawkeye issue to this most recent one. I don’t really get the angle with this ultimate hulk and I didn’t care for the Hiroshima thing either. Also I agree that this issue of Batman was not an abomination like some people believe
I don't really like Ultimates that much tbh, it's just so inconsistent and heavy handed. Like every other issue is just "character says the message of this issue out loud for 10 pages, Mark Twain-ingly monologuing their histories and ideals and views on the world and politics out loud as an ok but forgettable action scene plays out in the background" and it's getting really old. Like if it weren't for the occasional fantastic issue or idea like issue 4 then I'd probably just drop the book, but I believe it can be better than it has been plus I kinda have to read it for this whole Ultimate Universe deal lol I haven't read the latest issue yet though so maybe I'll be more of a fan of that one, seems like every other issue is pretty decent at least lol
I appreciate the ultimates chat. Every week that book comes out, I think, don’t we only have a limited number of issues until the maker comes back… it’s not the best book of the ultimate line and this latest issue felt cringe with all of the fighting moves. I’ll keep reading to see where it goes but I’m close to dropping lol
The Act of combining Buddhism and violence isn't necessarily contradictory. As it's just a religion and can be corrupted for one's own ends. It happens time & time again throughout history.
Sal, I can tell, as anyone can, you dearly love your wife. Awesome.

This is also a classic Avengers trope- and probably other superhero teams as well.
They get overwhelmed and ,of course, have to regroup.
Ahhh Tiffany with the award is so cute, I love this channel l
Sal and Tiff are my example of relationship goals. They are so great together

That issue was awesome. New Ultimate Hulk is such a great villain
Yeah I gotta disagree with him on this one, this issue was awesome

If DC won’t apologize for Bloodlines, then neither should you, Sal.

Never apologize for a Bloodlines tangent!
2 hours what a treat. You made my day. Para social relationship I guess.

@ great point and one of the things I’ve always loved about Superman. He is the most relatable despite being the most alien of the three
@ you mean non Superman fans

Bad take on Absolute Superman, from both.
Nah, just an honest opinion. It's ok to disagree.
Absolutely agree with Absolute Superman. It was the least engaging of the 3
