Luther just ate this song ALIVE. He knew he was gonna wreck shop as soon as he stepped to the mic. If butter was a voice it'd be Luther's voice. Also notice the lack of gimmicks. No backup singers or dancers or band. Just him, the mic, and the curtains. That's hard to do but he does it with such confidence.
    AMAZING.

Background to this performance: Dionne was a very good friend and mentor to Luther. Luther and Dionne had a big falling out and Luther found himself without his best friend. This was a tribute to Dionne and he chose this song because he love hearing Dionne singing. He was apologizing to Dionne with this song. They mended their relationship that night.

This puts this song in an interesting light...as without Warwick's friendship....it left a void, much like going into an empty house...and the part of his performance where he says, "I'm sorry" he very well may have said that to his friend on a sneak tip.

At 73 years old, I only was interested in Luther and Dionne's talents and choice of songs. I will tell you one thing, if Luther sang this love song focusing on mending a relationship with Dionne Warwick, if they had both were separately married...this would seal the deal of their divorces, that's for sure! I'm going to have to dig deeper on Google. his voice was phenomenal no one can compete with this! R I P Luther!

No auto tune needed here, he had perfect pitch and could pick notes out of his head. He sang that song thousands of times so the things that Iook improvised were weII pIanned out ahead of time - he just made it Iook easiIy played. His diction and use of resonance in his head and teeth were exacting. Luther's abiIity to control the air fIow and deliver sound through his entire vocal range was his Iifetime achievement, a man Iike no other singer. He had a velvet tonal quality that made him unique and ability to express himself through audience eye contact in an assertive sexy manner made women swoon and men jeaIous.

I saw an interview with him years ago on Arsenio Hall's show, and he made a comment I've never forgotten. He said that singers could do all the melismas and vocal runs in the world, that's fun acrobatics, but to him the most important thing of all is always the tone. Controlling clear, pure tone. And man, he had it. ❤ My favorite male R&B singer, always and forever.

Dionne Warwick released this song in 1964 and Luther Vandross covered it in 1981. He was a huge fan of Dionne's growing up (as was I) and they became friends. The song was written by Hall David and Burt Bacharach, as was many songs released by Dionne Warwick from 1961 to 1972.

@@VocalSplendorStudios I was fortunate enough to see him in concert twice. The last time was his last performance at what was then called The Universal Amphitheater. I took my then girlfriend, a friend, and my youngest daughter. As usual, he was amazing. As an extra added bonus, Gregory Hines was in the audience and sang There's Nothing Better Than Love with him. It's a beautiful duet that you can find on TH-cam. It was incredible.
Being older, I have had the pleasure of seeing many of the greats, past and present. Luther was/is one of my favorites. If you get a chance, look Jackie Wilson singing Danny Boy. His voice and range was so amazing. I saw him in concert in my teens headlining a show that had many great artists on the bill. Second billed was Aretha Franklin. As a young musician, I was thrilled to get to meet them both after the show.

Ive said it a million times...Luther had breath control that was off the charts. Im not a voice teacher by any means, but I know and understand some of the nuances of vocal technique(s). And Luther stood out from the pack of other great male singers, because his breath control techniques were so uniquely pleasant and rather odd. The only other singer I can compare, in that way, is Smokey Robinson. The way Luther falls off a note and/or stretches a note out, with this unique "breath-iness" is ALL LUTHER.

I love that you did this song, with this artist. Luther was one of a kind. His range was phenomenal! Better yet, he was a kind soul who blessed this earth while he was on it. Thank you, love your channel!

oh i love Luther i remember loving his song when going to school on the bus back in 1981-82 and early morning in los angeles my favorite song was "NEVER TOO MUCH" but their was one singer before him who had a voice that most singers of the day wanted to have and that was the voice of DAVID RUFFIN of the Temptations

A few other songs from Luther you might want to examine is Luther doing The Carpenters Superstar, Major Harris' Love Won't Let Me Wait or If Only For One Night. He was one of the greatest balladeers to ever do it. I learned the importance of silence and patience while singing in order to have the audience anticipating the next note. And, in his greatness, he made anyone's tune a Luther tune because he developed a distinctive "sound" that was distinctively his. Like Ray Charles, or Marvin Gaye, or Stevie or Aretha or Whitney or any of true greats. Autotune is destroying the necessity of great singing. I hope it's a fad and appreciation for musicians who master their craft will some day be back in vogue.
