Hiya, I'm a developmental biologist. Agree that graphite is prob best for marking eggs as it won't penetrate the eggshell + chorion. But if you wanted to test, I would graphite mark half a clutch and use permanent marker on the other. Then once the eggs hatch, inspect the inside of the eggshell to see if any pigment has gone through. It would also be worth trying to drop some ethanol on the hatched eggshells to see if that penetrated, after the egg has hatched? Though it should probably evaporate before penetrating the eggshell.
Don’t sell yourself short on just peace of mind for using the charcoal, you’re also bettering yourself and doing whatever you can in your power to give these animals as best as chance at life and that’s what matters and why you have so much support
The markers could have changed in their component makeup over the years. Something that wasn't a problem before, could be a problem now. You made the right choice in my mind 😄
Hey I don't keep reptiles but I watch snake Discovery and some other people who read reptiles and snake Discovery had an issue with some snakes I believe it was last year when they started using some other colors to Mark the eggs rather than just black sharpie sometimes they would use colors and draw something on the front cuz they like to have a theme with their eggs rather than just put a dot and they were like it seems like a lot of the ones that were marked in Orange went bad so they decided to check with a very large clutch this year and it seemed like that was just a coincidence last year because the orange ones did as well as the other colors this year honestly I think it would be best if they just did a DOT or a dash like everyone else does but they like to have fun with the marking and they don't lose that many babies
They are doing great! Once the eggs coming and hatching slows down I will do some more updates. We also need to build the Mexican Red Rump a new enclosure!

I am pretty sure permanent markers are solvent (ethanol) based hence the ethanol remark.
Woah, that sounds very cool haha!
It’s awesome that you so quickly changed to using charcoal, you seem to genuinely care about these little creatures while they’re under your care
im excited for this clutch! i bet they will be beautiful!

Charcoal is a great idea! I love it ❤
I feel like there could be another problem here it could just come off too easily
I love that you are using a different marking tool
No one:
The snakes every time you candle the eggs: ⚫ ---> ⚪
What do the eggs feel like? Are they smooth or rough? Are they leathery or feel like solid chalk?
Snake eggs are more smooth and soft.
The veins looks so great.
Those eggs are looking so happy and healthy! Mama did a good job laying some beautiful eggs

What happens to all the snakes that you hatch? Do people adopt them?
He sells them mainly, but he only sells when he is sure they are easy to keep pets, some snakes are more complicated that others.
bet the dude sells whatever he can breed whatever babies he gets don't believe everything you hear or see lmao.
They look like white potatoes.
Where do you find all of your eggs
He doesn't find them, the other snakes he owns have them
