one of the best line ever spoken by Dwalin at 1:00 "You sit here in this vast hall, with a crown upon your head, and yet you are lesser now than you have ever been"
Dwalin doesn't say much through the entire trilogy to be honest. Other than always grumbling under his breath about something going on with which he disagrees (and he disagrees with just about everything - including his own brother, Balin, bargaining with Bard for safe & secret passage into Laketown), this one sentence makes up for all of that. I think it just about broke Dwalin's heart to tell Thorin to his face that even Dwalin had lost faith in him.

An excellent scene, not only because it shows us how deeply Thorin's mind has degenerated, but because it shows Dwalin's disappointment at his self-centered madness. I don’t think Thorin would’ve listen to Gandalf. At that point, his kin were the people who could’ve gotten their king back. Even Gandalf knew, Thorin needed the other Dwarves to help him regain his sense as his love for his brothers in arms was always greatly than Errbor’s hoarded treasure.
People often say that these movies are the Star Wars prequels of the LOTR. I disagree. Granted the CGI is comparable but the acting in these movies are much better than in Star Wars.
@@CKelloggsThey’re not as bad, but they’re not the masterpieces that the new generation regards them as. Even Revenge of the Sith. I don’t blame the actors because no one could make Lucas’s poor script sound good. The fights were well choreographed but so lacking in the gravitas and the tension the original duels had. So many interesting characters like Jango Fett, Count Dooku, Maul, and General Grievous ended up as wasted potential within the confines of the movies. The Hobbit movies have their flaws, yes, but the acting is most certainly not one of them.
well I hear Halls, it actually makes more sense with vast halls, like hall for the King, because Hall is like a large space or room, usually inside a fortress, citadel or castle, vast walls don't make any sense in that sentence, as its part of the structure that form a room or hall. Also he said you sit here in this vast....., the appropriate noun for that should be hall not wall. People dont sit on wall.
The fact that the strongest warrior among the 13 dwarves is reduced to tears over his king, friend, leader, and brother becoming something unrecognizable. My own best friend got really messed up after he broke up with his gf and it took him a long time to come back. I never expected it to hurt him so much and it just broke my heart to see my brother become so full of anger a d bitterness.
One of the best lines in the entire series of these movies "You sit here in these vast halls, with a crown upon your head, and yet you are lesser now than you have ever been played it so many times over and over
Dwalin was the real Hero in time of need. He was able to speak up to his King and tell him the truth. While wise dwarf like Balin held back although having seeing dragon sickness before. “You were always my king, you use to know that once, you cannot see what you have become”. A Strong moment to bring back Thorin.
From 1:53 pause the video when it's zoomed in on Dwalins' face and from there start and pause the video and pay attention to his mouth around his mustache/beard; along with his eyes and eyebrow expressions you can truly grasp the pain he's feeling. It's crazy how warriors can endure such pain and sorrow in battle but once they heart is involved, it's too hard to contain oneself. Emotional turmoil will always Trump physical displeasure.
Cryatora, The Creator If you really like the actor watch him the theatre play The Crucible. you can watch it on digitaltheatre.com. 15 minutes into the over 3hr long production and he is on his knees crying and that is only the beginning. A stunnin performance of a man being broken and torn, trying to handle his own guilt while being persecuted for nothing by his enemies, and still retaining his dignity unto his death. John Proctor and Thorin Oakenshield have a lot in common.
When a character who does next to nothing throughout an entire trilogy can have a scene like this and, for a moment, rise above everyone else, you know you've got a good actor on your hands.
It's so nice to read so many of the comments below from people who love these movies as much as I do. For a Tolkien and D&D fan, these movies are a dream come true. They are incredible. I can not wait for the extended version!
Whenever we see Dwalin throughout the trilogy, he is always either shouting or speaking gruffly and brusquely, his tone and his voice dominates the scene with brutish assertiveness. But in this scene, he pleads, he reasons, he shows just how much Thorin means to him. An excellent scene that brings tears to my eyes, every single time.
Also really speaks to the continuing motif in Tolkien’s works of power vs. worthiness of it. In Hobbit, the man unworthy of the power was Thorin when all he saw was gold. In Lord of the Rings, the unworthy one was Denethor, a Steward who ignored his duty to the king. In Hobbit, the one worthy of the power of royalty was Thorin when he saw his people. In Lord of the Rings, the one worthy of power was Aragorn, not just because he was the heir of Isildur, but because his actions proved it. A crown on your head doesn’t make you a king. For all people hate on The Hobbit movies, the writers really did understand Tolkien
It is true. A throne and a crown, anyone can sit on it and call themselves king. A true king answers the call of his people and his presence inspires them to follow him. A true King is not someone who rules, but goes alone, yet his people follow him and so he leads them, from there, that’s someone truly became king. Not with some coronation, but when the people join you in the fight.
Thorin is lucky to have friends like that. Even after what he had become, they still remained loyal and at the same time didn't want to lose him. Dwarves definitely value their people (regardless of blood relation) like family, even more so than humans. Like they might even treat strangers among their kind like brothers and loved ones. That's powerful. As Dwalin wasn't just concerned with only Dain, but the rest of the Legion under him. It's extremely heartwarming an entire race treats each other like family. Like durring the Battle of Azanulbizar, the survivors mourned all the dead soldiers that fought in the battle and were clearly heartbroken about their deaths, almost like they lost a brother or someone that care about to the core. The Dwarven people's loyalty to each other is beyond friendship, it's true brotherhood.
"Thorin...they are dying out there." "You sit here in these vast halls, with a crown upon your head, and yet you are lesser now than you have ever been." "You were always my king. You used to know that once. You cannot see what you have become." I was only ten or eleven when I first saw this scene, but they have become cemented in my mind ever since.
This whole scene was agonizing to watch, but it was also so true to their characters and beautifully acted. The subtle change in Dwalin's face when Thorin tells him to go "before he kills him", is wrenching. You can see his heart break that much more because suddenly here's his best friend, his brother in arms, telling him he's willing to kill him. Ouch
It’s always so heartbreaking seeing someone you care abt so much become so bitter, and dull to sickness! I had a good friend who due to life circumstances is just totally gone emotionally! It’s been many months since we officially ended our friendship! But it still hurts, she was a good friend, but due to her family drama, and mental illness, she’s not been around emotionally for a long time now, and I’ve noticed her being more and more dull ever since! Breaks my heart to see what she turned into! Someone who I don’t recognize whatsoever!
0:39 "Many die in war. Life is cheap. But a treasure... such as this cannot be counted in lives lost. It is worth... all the blood we can spend!" Indeed Thorin was lost in his madness, calling life and blood a cheap thing, easily to be spend, like money... or gold.
Loved this scene, it's so heartbreaking!!! I also realized Graham Mctavish voiced Arl Eamon in Dragon Age Origins and hear it come out sometimes. But this scene was Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now, if Thorin wasn't ill with dragon-sickness, I would have thought that he was drunk when he yelled, "I am your king!", then pulled out his sword and stumbled LOL. That was too funny.
I honestly believe that Thorin was very aware of what was happening to him. You can see him fighting the sickness the whole time. You could see the guilt and regret every time he lashed out. He was watching himself fall apart just as much as the others were, and it was scaring him that he might lose the fight entirely. You can also see him begging for help sometimes, but all he got was scolding and ridicule from nearly everyone except Bilbo. So when he almost killed the hobbit, he just about lost completely thinking he may have just gotten rid of the only person trying to break through to him. I think this mirrors depression and other mental illnesses a lot. We lash out at those we love and hurt those who are trying to help. We struggle to see through the haze of guilt, anger, self-hatred, regret, or fear. Sometimes, we break through, and other times, we can't. And it always seems like others don't notice the struggle we are having to not be the person we currently are.
The Hobbit could have been a good movie if it would have follow the book closer. But thanks to scenes llike this we have not one, but three great movies. Thanks P.J!!
Well to be fair lotr also deviated on the books aswell denethor beig a villain, arwen rescuing the hobbits not glorfindel, and the scouring of the shire was left out,
More scenes like this between the dwarves and less of the elves, especially the love triangle, would have made for such a better trilogy. It's like they didn't trust audiences to enjoy Middle Earth unless elves (especially Legolas), wizards, and Sauron had a big presence. I still enjoy the Hobbit movies a lot, mostly due to the fantastic acting, but they missed the mark big time when they created or expanded roles that had nothing to do with the central tale while overlooking potentially poignant stories like Thorin's relationship with various other dwarves. After the great buildup of what Thorin meant to the dwarves in AUJ, I was hoping for more on that note, but it almost entirely falls away but for isolated scenes like this one. What a shame. Graham McTavish acted the heck out of the few chances he was given.
Well said! Every time Legolas or Tauriel (or especially Alfrid) come onscreen I'm tempted to fastforward through their scenes, and I NEVER fastforward through any part of Lord of the Rings or even the first Hobbit movie. They gave the Dwarves a lot more personality in the films and a terrific arc for Thorin, and it's not well concluded in even the extended cut. I will defend the Hobbit trilogy to a point, but taking focus off the Dwarves was a mistake.
Dwalin: How can you worry about the gold when Dain and his army are being slaughtered?! It’s no wonder Bilbo gave the Arkenstone to the men of Laketown and the elves.
It's heart warming for me to see Red Dwarf's Mr Ackerman be an actual dwarf - not to mention one of the most badass ones in movie history - and deliver such a powerful line in the whole franchise
Graham McTavish utterly owned this scene. I was merely a viewer watching a movie, and yet I was both taken in and cut down by the honesty of his words.
For all of y’all saying it should’ve been Balin talking to thorin! I feel like it hits this hard because Dwalin is the one doing it! Yes Balin is basically the wise one of the company! But something abt dwalins voice and character in general, as well as how obvious it is made that he cares abt, looks up to, and is highly loyal to thorin! I feel like this scene hit the hardest it did because it was dwalin talking to him
reminds me of isildur , he had a great journey to reach his goal , but just get cursed , because even the greatest men are not invincible against the seduction of the power
Oh, God. Do any of you ever the feeling when you look deeply into the beauty of Thorin's (Richard's) lips and eyes, you wish to kiss them. And his voice so velvet that you could fall asleep. Sorry my grammar sucks.
I can understand that warner Bros made peter do some weird things to this trilogy but to see people talk about scenes like this in a good way and how some of these actors should've gotten Oscars is awesome and heatwarming to hear it made me feel like an outcast or blind to other movies and stuff when seeing people keep saying that This Trilogy Sucks Ass and doesn't deserve to be next to Lord of the Rings . People are so wrong . 1 these scenes are awesome 2 this was suppose to have different feels and emotions to it anyway . Tolkien wasn't trying to make this a direct prequel from lord of the rings but in my opinion I felt Tolkiens and peters side in this trilogy . This trilogy felt different yet the same to lord of the rings . And I liked that . It makes you think alot like what would happen if they got rid of an actor or a scene or two . Could change the face of the entire series. Like what happen if they got rid of this scene or the Gollum scene from the first hobbit movie . That would've been crappy . Or what if they added more scenes that meant more to the book or not to the book . Things like this I keep thinking about . Like if they gotten rid of the weathertop scene in The Fellowship of the ring or the counsel of Elrond scenes . It would've had a whole different line to it . Or if they actually gotten Sean Connery ( which was planned ) to play Gandalf instead of Sir Ian McKellan . So many topics that could ruin/ make a trilogy or series better . Loved Lord of the Rings loved the Hobbit can't change anything about that . If Peter made an Ultimate re-extended edition to add even more scenes altogether to 6 movies like George Lucas did to Star Wars that would be awesome and I would 100% buy that . Some fans did ask him if he was doing something like that and said he still has miles of film untouched and edited and said that would be fun doing that. I swear Pete if somehow someway you see this or any other topic about this , do it. It might even make The Hobbit even better to some people and somehow make Lord of the Rings battles alot more longer . Same with the hobbit . I wish it was like 4 hours each movie for all 6 . That way it would take a little over 24 hours to finish 6 movies . Lol that would be fun .
While Dwalin might have resented Bilbo before this moment for withholding the Arkenstone from Thorin, he must have gained immense respect for Bilbo's bravery and wisdom in this moment, because Thorin was clearly not himself and Bilbo knew it. It is only now that he truly realizes what his "king" has become. Am I wrong? I feel like Balin and Dwalin were the two that had the most respect of any of the Dwarves for Bilbo's valor and stout heart, for being the only one with the courage to stand up to Thorin at his worst.
I like how before he mentions moving the gold deeper it seems like Dwalin got through, the mountain fortress is massive, and it’s a fucking *mountain* they could keep the entirety of lake town safe and warm, but then he mentions the gold…
@@tylerjones7592 When did I ever say that was Christopher Lee??????? Christopher Lee portrays Saruman in the Middle-Earth films, not a Dwarf character. Also, Christopher Lee is not the only actor to ever portray Count Dracula. Graham McTavish who portrayed Dwarf warrior Dwalin in The Hobbit trilogy voices Dracula in Netflix's hit anime adaptation of the iconic video game series Castlevania opposite his Hobbit co-star Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakenshield) who voices Castlevania's main character Trevor Belmont.
Uhm, in this particular scene it's better for Dwalin to do it. It means way more. Because Dwalin was most loyal to Thorin, so for him to speak up is a big sign.
The little gasp Dwalin makes after that last comment from Thorin. Its like he's initially shocked and doesn't quite believe Thorin would go through with it so he doesn't move Then Thorins face changes and darkens, and he realises that he's deteriorated to the point he would go as far to kill someone so loyal to him
The actor that plays thorin could have yelled the line ‘ go or I will kill you’ but he didn’t. That is because e is sick with the dragon sickness but the true thorin is peaking through and telling dwalin that I cannot control myself, I don’t want to kill you.
@@Lilly_LaVonne Dwalin is also Thorin's cousin, and Thorin knows he has nothing left after the spectacle he made of himself and his almost strangling Bilbo for trading the Arkenstone to Bard also got the rest of The Company to refuse to throw Bilbo over the battlements.
when thorin says " Do not speak to me as if I was some loley/ lonley lord......... as.. if... I were... still..... thorin.... oakenshield." I was ike who are you then???? XD
In away I hate this movie not because it’s bad it’s wonderful all of the movies are but I hate that this movie will most likely be the last we will ever see of the hobbit and lotr these scenes were beautifully done make you believe in things like honor, bravery, friendship it gives so many emotions but in the end you know it’s the ending of an era.... no movies after this have even stood a chance of impressing me like LOTRs and The Hobbit. And that truly saddens me....
How is it possible that the best lines and most powerful scene in The hobbit series comes from Dwalin, a dwarf that had far to few lines and sceentime and its not a crime? Ffs why are Dwalin not the main character? 😂
@Planet Offkey i like him way more then any of those, he should have had more screen time! The old veteran warrior is way more intresting of a character then the two kids that dont really do shit a😂

Quite the generation we were alive in. Sir Ian Mckellen in one of the most iconic roles of all time. That cast. That cinematic undertaking. Legendary.

Just tea thank you.
@@coletrain583 Gandalf convinced Bilbo to give up the ring though, didn't he?
People often say that these movies are the Star Wars prequels of the LOTR. I disagree. Granted the CGI is comparable but the acting in these movies are much better than in Star Wars.
Yes
The prequels are not as bad as people say they are and at least people can agree that they’re better than the sequel trilogy
@@CKelloggs the prequels were good but compared to hobbit it had very cringy diaologue this from the mouth of dude who like the prequels
So much heartbreak in this scene. Graham McTavish did a hell of a job.
"You sit here in these vast halls with a crown upon your head, and yet you are lesser now than you have ever been"
Heidi Fangirl its not vast walls, it's vast halls
***** I hear the W when he speaks that line lol
well I hear Halls, it actually makes more sense with vast halls, like hall for the King, because Hall is like a large space or room, usually inside a fortress, citadel or castle, vast walls don't make any sense in that sentence, as its part of the structure that form a room or hall.
I never expected it to hurt him so much and it just broke my heart to see my brother become so full of anger a d bitterness.
this scene is sooooo powerful
One of the best lines in the entire series of these movies
"You sit here in these vast halls, with a crown upon your head, and yet you are lesser now than you have ever been
played it so many times over and over
Dwalin was the real Hero in time of need.
This was an emotional scene for me. I always get close to tears when I hear Thorin's voice crack like that.... :,(
Cryatora, The Creator If you really like the actor watch him the theatre play The Crucible. you can watch it on digitaltheatre.com.
Great! Thank you!
"You sit here in these vast halls, with a crown upon your head, and yet you are lesser now than you have ever been." - Dwalin
When a character who does next to nothing throughout an entire trilogy can have a scene like this and, for a moment, rise above everyone else, you know you've got a good actor on your hands.
Same with Bofur in the first movie when talking to Bilbo about home.
It's so nice to read so many of the comments below from people who love these movies as much as I do. For a Tolkien and D&D fan, these movies are a dream come true. They are incredible. I can not wait for the extended version!
conan1174 Neither can I.
The extended versions are awesome!
Also he was the most loyal out of the dwarves. Shows how much Thorin has fallen.
Yes
Denethor was worse, in my opinion. He openly stated that he wished Faramir died instead of Boromir, in addition to trying to burn him alive.
are the academy awards people blind.. why don't they give richard an award he really deserve it apically on this scenes was so amazing
+mo0onlightmovies Yup the Oscars people really are douchebags.
"Thorin...they are dying out there."
"You sit here in these vast halls, with a crown upon your head, and yet you are lesser now than you have ever been."
"You were always my king. You used to know that once. You cannot see what you have become."
I was only ten or eleven when I first saw this scene, but they have become cemented in my mind ever since.
Great acting one of the best scenes in the movie!
Ouch
I can't help but see them as Trevor and Dracula, their so good
This scene made me cry even more than all the death scenes combined, and that is saying a lot. Wonderful acting, great dialogue, just perfect.
"You were always my King. You used to know that once."
This one hits so hard even Thorin stops to listen.
Richard's performance is really perfect.
1:00 Love that line
It pains me to see him spiral into such madness over gold. Oh lord, Thorin what have you become? :'(
"Anyone who has to say 'I am your king' is no true king" - Tywin Lannister
i got chills when thorin said "get out, before I kill you"
0:39 "Many die in war. Life is cheap. But a treasure... such as this cannot be counted in lives lost. It is worth... all the blood we can spend!"
Indeed Thorin was lost in his madness, calling life and blood a cheap thing, easily to be spend, like money... or gold.
Loved this scene, it's so heartbreaking!!! I also realized Graham Mctavish voiced Arl Eamon in Dragon Age Origins and hear it come out sometimes. But this scene was Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Unbelievable scene one of my favorite scenes in movie history!!!
I love Thorin!! It's sad, the way gold and silver can poses your mind. 😕
The Hobbit could have been a good movie if it would have follow the book closer. But thanks to scenes llike this we have not one, but three great movies. Thanks P.J!!

Graham Mctavish just nailed this scene...
No we need more scenes with Thranduil
@@larazavaritskaya276 Nah, we didn't need that.
We needed more scenes with both Thorin and Thranduil. Less with Legolas, he wasn't as interesting as he'd been in Lotr

The hobbit really is a good movie
Dwalin: How can you worry about the gold when Dain and his army are being slaughtered?! It’s no wonder Bilbo gave the Arkenstone to the men of Laketown and the elves.
Just a heads up Dwalin is Thorin's cousin so there is a reason why Dwalin said"you were always my king"I know Dwalin truly loved Thorin no matter what
I think that line is more about the fact that Thorin didn't need gold, vast halls and a crown to be a king. His character is what made him kingly
It's heart warming for me to see Red Dwarf's Mr Ackerman be an actual dwarf - not to mention one of the most badass ones in movie history - and deliver such a powerful line in the whole franchise
Great line by thorin "I am your king!" Always loved it❤
Graham McTavish utterly owned this scene.
I feel like this scene hit the hardest it did because it was dwalin talking to him
People say there are no scenes that can match LOTR in this trilogy, I present this scene to them
reminds me of isildur , he had a great journey to reach his goal , but just get cursed , because even the greatest men are not invincible against the seduction of the power
This scene is so intensely powerful and heartbreaking. These two did a tremendous job.
when you find out these two voice Trevor and Dracula in Castlevania
Dwalin changes thorin cause he has always been the most loyal to thorin. Probably the closest too
I would have said this to Thorin: YOU MAY BE A KING BUT YOU'RE NOT ACTING LIKE ONE!!!!!!
00:49 he looks and sounds like boromir talking about the ring.
Oh, God. Do any of you ever the feeling when you look deeply into the beauty of Thorin's (Richard's) lips and eyes, you wish to kiss them. And his voice so velvet that you could fall asleep.
Sorry my grammar sucks.
1:24 Thorin oakeshieild
UGH! Thorin, please!
Thorin: "get out, before I kill you."
Dwalin: "Doubt"
Thorin is the best character in the Hobbit franchise. his death was the saddest.
Agreeing with you there on full scale.
I never got the hate this movies got.

Should've been between balin and Thorin as they had the closest bond, and balin was the most developed. It would've been much more impactful.
Uhm, in this particular scene it's better for Dwalin to do it. It means way more. Because Dwalin was most loyal to Thorin, so for him to speak up is a big sign.
The little gasp Dwalin makes after that last comment from Thorin. Its like he's initially shocked and doesn't quite believe Thorin would go through with it so he doesn't move
Then Thorins face changes and darkens, and he realises that he's deteriorated to the point he would go as far to kill someone so loyal to him
The actor that plays thorin could have yelled the line ‘ go or I will kill you’ but he didn’t. That is because e is sick with the dragon sickness but the true thorin is peaking through and telling dwalin that I cannot control myself, I don’t want to kill you.
