I'm actually reading my first Stephen King right now, halfway through 11/22/63, and it's honestly one of the most compelling reading experiences I've had, period. I had steered clear of Stephen King for the longest time because of his popularity, but now I feel silly because he really is an excellent writer, and I'm definitely going to read more after this one.
If you want to read another book by him, Misery, Shining and Pet Sematary are all really good horror novels. The Mr. Mercedes book is also a great dark detective novel as well, less scary but a very entertaining read.

Honestly, I get that this is tongue-in-cheek, but forcing yourself take something utterly mundane and somehow find a way to make it horrifying is actually a pretty good way to make an original kind of horror. People have done ghosts, but it’s hard to think of many horror stories about a dog of all things, so you have to actively look for things scary about it, which can help make it feel more immersive and real, I think. Sorry if this was ramble-y.
