And that just doesn't happen from 🍑🥒🍩 polyrhythmic prog solo skill j*rk-off. Rhythm is primal and that means that often fairly "simple" ones hit you the most in that specific way. Sorry for having to say that. And Tatsuya Amano is one of those who understands that. He gives a song what the song needs. And, if you know Crossfaith, they're one of those bands you put on a big stage at a festival in front of a huge crowd of people who have never even heard of them and who usually wouldn't listen to music like that as second act of the day during the height of summer in a location like Spain, no shade in sight and as a bonus there's a heateave going on and they STILL make the crowd rage. That's a special kind of magic and an integral part of that kind of "circle pit" magic is: the drumming. It's the fuel for everyone's desire to let go no matter what. And THAT'S what makes Tatsuya not just a solid, but a great drummer in my opinion. I don't even know why I get so riled up about people who think that peak drumming is about nothing but peak speed and or peak polyrhythm. 🤷♀️ Anyway, as promised little bonus story which might make drummers chuckle 😜 As I said, final practical exam on Sax; SHIFRIN. Not the fun, easy 5/5 kind... 😂 If you know, you know... I don't know why, but after my exams were done my sax teacher sent me off to the nearest university for a little appointment with a former university mate of his who turned out to be the head of the Sax department. When I got there, it was "the boss" and one of his students. I took out my stuff, played that song for whatever reason (yeah I was that type of "no questions asked" girl 🫣😂) and when I was done, the Prof's first reaction was "How do you practice?" I was... Confused. As in "uh, is there more than one way to practice?" But before I could ask about that, he continued with "Metronome?" My response was "Ah, that's what you meant. No. Well, my mom once got hers out but then... Not anymore 🤷♀️" His follow-up question was: "Do you count?" My reaction was an even more confused expression and "What's... counting?" That was his turn to be a bit confused but he explained it. I just thought "TF? People actually do that?" but decided against saying it out loud. But again, before I could say anything he followed up with another question: "How do you work through songs?" Again, I was confused and if I remember correctly stupidly pointed towards my sheets and said "I, uh, play what's on the sheets?" He slightly raised an eyebrow: "I mean, how do you work through the rhythm part?" "What do you mean, "work through "?" I felt SO stupid at that point 🤦 You know, like... you've been doing something your entire life up to that point and then you end up in a situation like that and feel like you don't know shit about what you've been doing. Again, I just gave my sheets a meaningful side eye and said "I, uh, play what's on the sheets?" He: "But... how do you KNOW the rhythm?" I think I was about to start crying at that point. I just, again, stupidly replied with: "I don't know? I just... KNOW?" He then pointed at the sheets and said: "Even THAT one?" "Oh, no. That one was the first time I actually had to think about the rhythm part. I mean, how often do you come across stuff like dotted 128ths?" "Ok. So, how did you do that then." "Uh, I... Just imagined one quarter to be a full bar? Like that it becomes... Manageable? Then I just start slow and speed it up? 🤷♀️" "And how long did that take you for the entire song?" "Uh, I don't know. 20-30 minutes or so?" At that point he just proceeded his lesson but at the end the only thing he said was "Have you considered starting to drum?" Maaaan, I was confused. Just said "... No?" At which point he wordlessly turned around and left. I then asked the student who was still sitting there if my sax playing was THAT shitty. He just laughed and told me "Let's just say: sax is a fairly easy instrument. You can compensate a lack of talent with a lot of practice. Drumming on the other hand... without a certain talent you can practice as much as you want, you'll never be anything but mediocre. Which means there's loads of good sax players but not enough good drummers..." Unfortunately my mother's reaction to that was: "DRUMMING?!? No! Just NO" 🤷♀️😂
First of all, thank you for your amazing article, you should consider starting a blog or vlog (or Sax covers of German(?) music) bc this was some great story telling!!! My response: - I was forced to learn piano even though I loved drums, I totally sympathize - Teenage years I rebelled and learned drums anyway - You describe most of the metal drumming community who get bored if the drummer isn't playing insanely fast double pedal with crazy syncopations 🤣🤣🤣
@DrumRoast "- I was forced to learn piano even though I loved drums, I totally sympathize" Sorry to hear you have that shitty experience as well, but, hm... 🤔 What I'm about to say is something you probably won't like to read, but: I'm pretty sure the piano experience helps your drumming. Even if you hated it, because it wasn't what you wanted, it did change your perception of music. Piano is the instrument that's a bit of a "whole package " thing. It teaches you about harmonies and melodies, but also rhythm... you know, the whole picture is important for that. Which means you have a deeper understanding of music than many drummers who don't have much of a background with a different instrument, and being able to support the ebb and flow of music and the moods that come with harmony and melody with drumming is such an important part. You might be a rhythm genius, but if you don't have a feel for the rest of music, that alone doesn't do much. You'll still be a mediocre drummer 🤷♀️ (And hey, you don't have to let your parents know it might actually benefit your drumming in some way 😜😂) "- Teenage years I rebelled and learned drums anyway" 👏 for growing your rebellious b*lls early enough to gnaw your way through to what you truly wanted 😁 You know, took me way longer to realize just how much I was groomed by my mother to be her minime. And, it's not like she forced me to learn an instrument I didn't want to learn. I wanted to learn all of the ones I did end up learning. The problem was that... she knew they weren't truly the right thing for me and no, in hindsight, it seems like she was actively trying to keep me from doing the one thing I might have GENUINELY been great at because of having been born with a talent I never knew I had. She knew. I found out later in bits and pieces that she realized I had a gift for rhythm and that the only things I really enjoyed, even as a 5yo were boogies and stuff like that. She still kept giving me primarily classical music, which I mostly never enjoyed and I was never able to play emotional. I just didn't feel it like I felt jazzy things. She also realized that I never needed to work through rhythm. That I never needed a metronome. She never even told me that "counting" existed. And... when I came back from that appointment at the university and told her what had happened, she told me because drumming was too loud. Want to know what the funniest thing is? At that time she did African Drumming. Had her own group and they regularly rehearsed in our house. And do you want to know what's even worse? A couple of years later, when my brother wanted to learn how to drum, she just went and bought a kit for him. To this day I don't know WTF was going on there. Whenever I try to talk to her, she doesn't deny that she's always known that I was rhythmically gifted and she knew that this isn't particularly common. But whenever I ask why it didn't occur to her that DRUMMING might be the right thing for me, she doesn't have an answer for me and just shrugs. Once she tried to deflect with "I don't like Jazz and stuff. Don't have access to it". Funny how nowadays she's primarily listening to Jazz... 💀 Call me crazy, but somehow it feels like she STOLE that from me. 🤷♀️ "- You describe most of the metal drumming community who get bored if the drummer isn't playing insanely fast double pedal with crazy syncopations" I knoooohooohoooow 🥺 That's why I usually avoid talking about that topic. 😅 And do you want to know what -in my humble personal unpopular opinion- the best metal drummers are? People who aren't into metal 💀 Best metal bands, from my experience, consist of people who each bring a different musical background and a diverse music taste to the table. They're the ones who can advance things instead of being stuck in a box. Think about what the switch to Gabe Helguera did for I Prevail. I mean, they blew up with their drummer whose experience was teaching and playing in church bands and who only learned double bass for the audition and didn't know anything about metal drumming before that. If you compare pre-Gabe I Prevail with with-Gabe I Prevail, the difference is ginormous! (Uh, no clue if you've stumbled over him before or not. Didn't rummage through your entire catalog, sorry 🫣) (He's actually my second fav metal drummer) And in regards to blog or vlog: aw hell naw! 😂 Not that I wouldn't like talking about stuff like that, but the only kind of people who stumble over something like that are musicians or crazy aficionados 🙄 Doing that, especially as a woman, is like taking a bath with a swarm of piranhas while it's "that special time of the month for us womb owners". Especially anything that involves hearing my voice. These kinds of people take you even less seriously when they know you're a woman (who has one of those "girly" voices 😫) Though, sometimes I think I'd really love doing something like "side stage reviews". You know, less of a review of the music, more a review of the live experience with talking points like: stage presence, production, connection to the crowd, what kind of crowd to expect, does the band's audio output match what the venue has to offer in that regard... And once that part is over, it's off to playing some stupid boardgame with the band while talking about music. You know, the kind musicians do. Ah... those magical aftershow tour bus hangouts with the fartlympics, music talk and childish pranks... 🫶 You love it or hate it. There's no in-between... 😂 (And don't ask how I know 💀 Let's just say: somehow musicians seem to be drawn to the way I talk about music like moths to light. Don't ask me why. Another reason to NOT do a blog or vlog like that 😅) Anyway, hope you're having a great day
@@asaris_ been a great day!!! behind in my recordings to catch up with the amount of amazing comments like these but it's been really fun and rewarding getting to know so many of my subscriber's backgrounds!!!
while the other Yoasobi supporting drummer, Honogumo, is a bit chill and calm while playing the drums, Tatsuya Amano gives energetic feel and powerful drumming. I'm sure you can notice the different if listening and comparing both of them.
just took a listen and also checked out his channel..Honogumo is SUPER chill...completely different vibe...is Yoasobi swapping out drummers all of the time?
Little bonus info: he actually does the mixing and editing himself (unless specified otherwise) and that's not his type of music either. His actual band is Crossfaith. If you want to enjoy the "full package" to an extreme, check out his Halloween special for "Countdown to Hell" (from Crossfaith, but "hard and heavy" warning for that one). His Chucky impersonation while drumming like THAT still gives me shivers. 😂 For more rhythmically conplex drumming you might want to check out one of his videos of performances for another one of his side gigs (for TK from Ling Tosite Sigure). Have fun going down that rabbit hole! He positively managed to ruin the sound and production quality of most other drumming videos (of whichever kind) for me. By now I either find them totally deadmixed or horribly imbalanced. DARN YOU, TATSUYA! 😅
"He positively managed to ruin the sound and production quality of most other drumming videos (of whichever kind) for me." 100 percent right there, I'm officially spoiled now 🤣🤣🤣
Definitely recommended all his performance, all are phenomenal. He truly knows how to play the drum ❤❤. I don't know how to express my feelings to you, just watch his every performance meticulously, he play so gorgeous in every songs❤❤❤❤
@DrumRoast To be honest, for little autistic me it's more about details like the combination of drumming and showmanship. It's difficult to do peak both at the same time, with that kind of an energy consuming genre, for an entire show, non-stop, drum solo included. I'm also obsessing over things like his editing and mixing perfectionism. Yes, he had to get into it first and his skills are still a work in progress, but I love his idea of doing both. He cleans it up enough to be "bearable and pleasant" but keeps enough noise trash in to keep the "live vibe" alive. His cuts and transitions actually match what he's doing and he just knows which angle will look best at what time. And don't forget his selection of sounds. Which might not be particularly noteworthy among the kind of genres you're active in, but among "extreme metal" drummers, someone who puts that much effort into creating sound scapes is a bit of a rarity. At least at that skill level. There's people who try, but aren't too good at it which results of kits that sound imbalanced in one way or another. I hate that. And he's even one of those who loves playing around with edgy sounds as highlight elements and even if they're technically speaking breaking the balance of the sound scape, the way he's using them always somehow fits. (Well, nowadays. In his earlier years there's been a bit of a "hit and miss" thing in regards to that, but if you ask me, that's fine. He got better at it.) And... He's one of those drummers who don't put their ego first. I noticed that about his solos. Sure, they're "insane skill displays" as well, but he always keeps it in a way that's still entertaining for people who aren't drummers or total drum nuts. I always hate it when drummers lose themselves in their skill in a way that just isn't fun to listen to for ANYONE. What's the point? Gee, I think I better stop here. 🫣😂
Thanks for this one. The snare looked like a tom. I first heard him from Crossfaith, a beast. Very talented drummer. Another drummer that for quite a few years has been called god of double pedals is the long time drummer for Babymetal, Aoyamo Hideki - here's video of some clips - th-cam.com/video/7mluncf_4WI/w-d-xo.html - the solos are similar as they were played at a lot of the shows. I don't know why, but after my exams were done my sax teacher sent me off to the nearest university for a little appointment with a former university mate of his who turned out to be the head of the Sax department. When I got there, it was "the boss" and one of his students.
I took out my stuff, played that song for whatever reason (yeah I was that type of "no questions asked" girl 🫣😂) and when I was done, the Prof's first reaction was "How do you practice?"
I was... Confused. As in "uh, is there more than one way to practice?"
But before I could ask about that, he continued with "Metronome?"
My response was "Ah, that's what you meant. No. Well, my mom once got hers out but then... Not anymore 🤷♀️"
His follow-up question was: "Do you count?"
My reaction was an even more confused expression and "What's... counting?"
That was his turn to be a bit confused but he explained it. I just thought "TF? People actually do that?" but decided against saying it out loud. But again, before I could say anything he followed up with another question: "How do you work through songs?" Again, I was confused and if I remember correctly stupidly pointed towards my sheets and said "I, uh, play what's on the sheets?"
He slightly raised an eyebrow: "I mean, how do you work through the rhythm part?"
"What do you mean, "work through "?" I felt SO stupid at that point 🤦
You know, like... you've been doing something your entire life up to that point and then you end up in a situation like that and feel like you don't know shit about what you've been doing. Again, I just gave my sheets a meaningful side eye and said "I, uh, play what's on the sheets?"
He: "But... how do you KNOW the rhythm?"
I think I was about to start crying at that point. I just, again, stupidly replied with: "I don't know? I just... KNOW?"
He then pointed at the sheets and said: "Even THAT one?"
"Oh, no. That one was the first time I actually had to think about the rhythm part. I mean, how often do you come across stuff like dotted 128ths?"
"Ok. So, how did you do that then."
"Uh, I... Just imagined one quarter to be a full bar? Like that it becomes... Manageable? Then I just start slow and speed it up? 🤷♀️"
"And how long did that take you for the entire song?"
"Uh, I don't know. 20-30 minutes or so?"
At that point he just proceeded his lesson but at the end the only thing he said was "Have you considered starting to drum?"
Maaaan, I was confused.
Which means there's loads of good sax players but not enough good drummers..."
Unfortunately my mother's reaction to that was: "DRUMMING?!? No! Just NO"
🤷♀️😂
Lemme read this after dinner, I love the first part of your message so far 🥹🥹🥹
@@DrumRoast Haha, Guten Appetit! *nom nom*
Time for bed for me 😉
First of all, thank you for your amazing article, you should consider starting a blog or vlog (or Sax covers of German(?) music) bc this was some great story telling!!! My response:
- I was forced to learn piano even though I loved drums, I totally sympathize
- Teenage years I rebelled and learned drums anyway
- You describe most of the metal drumming community who get bored if the drummer isn't playing insanely fast double pedal with crazy syncopations 🤣🤣🤣
@DrumRoast
"- I was forced to learn piano even though I loved drums, I totally sympathize"
Sorry to hear you have that shitty experience as well, but, hm... 🤔
What I'm about to say is something you probably won't like to read, but: I'm pretty sure the piano experience helps your drumming. You'll still be a mediocre drummer 🤷♀️
(And hey, you don't have to let your parents know it might actually benefit your drumming in some way 😜😂)
"- Teenage years I rebelled and learned drums anyway"
👏 for growing your rebellious b*lls early enough to gnaw your way through to what you truly wanted 😁
You know, took me way longer to realize just how much I was groomed by my mother to be her minime. 💀
Call me crazy, but somehow it feels like she STOLE that from me. 🤷♀️
"- You describe most of the metal drumming community who get bored if the drummer isn't playing insanely fast double pedal with crazy syncopations"
I knoooohooohoooow 🥺 That's why I usually avoid talking about that topic. 😅
And do you want to know what -in my humble personal unpopular opinion- the best metal drummers are? People who aren't into metal 💀
Best metal bands, from my experience, consist of people who each bring a different musical background and a diverse music taste to the table. Didn't rummage through your entire catalog, sorry 🫣) (He's actually my second fav metal drummer)
And in regards to blog or vlog: aw hell naw! 😂
Not that I wouldn't like talking about stuff like that, but the only kind of people who stumble over something like that are musicians or crazy aficionados 🙄
Doing that, especially as a woman, is like taking a bath with a swarm of piranhas while it's "that special time of the month for us womb owners".
Especially anything that involves hearing my voice. These kinds of people take you even less seriously when they know you're a woman (who has one of those "girly" voices 😫)
Though, sometimes I think I'd really love doing something like "side stage reviews". 😂
(And don't ask how I know 💀 Let's just say: somehow musicians seem to be drawn to the way I talk about music like moths to light. Don't ask me why. Another reason to NOT do a blog or vlog like that 😅)
Anyway, hope you're having a great day
@@asaris_ been a great day!!! behind in my recordings to catch up with the amount of amazing comments like these but it's been really fun and rewarding getting to know so many of my subscriber's backgrounds!!!
while the other Yoasobi supporting drummer, Honogumo, is a bit chill and calm while playing the drums, Tatsuya Amano gives energetic feel and powerful drumming. I'm sure you can notice the different if listening and comparing both of them.
@@pierz510 HUGE difference for sure!
just took a listen and also checked out his channel..Honogumo is SUPER chill...completely different vibe...is Yoasobi swapping out drummers all of the time?
@@DrumRoast yup.. Honogomu is their 1st choice drummer. Tatsuya occasionally plays with them.
For more rhythmically conplex drumming you might want to check out one of his videos of performances for another one of his side gigs (for TK from Ling Tosite Sigure).
@toojess7521 Haha, don't have to tell me. His drumming videos are my pre bedtime obsession ever since he started the channel 🫣😂
❤❤❤❤I can see his rizz taking effect in the comment section so far 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
He got better at it.)
And...

Can you React to Tatsuya Amano play drum for TK - First Death . By the way nice reaction bro 🔥
🔥🔥🔥 thank you bro First Death seems to be heavily requested :)
I think he was part of Babymetal from 2013 to about 2019.
thanks for the links Glen!!! I would've reacted to Babymetal but just scared of the fandom atm 🤣🤣🤣
This is not his own drum set, he own drum set especially his base drum size is 28"❤❤
you know they say about big bass drum sizes 🤣🤣🤣
But for a rental/backline kit, it looks pretty nice already (with all of the tech and cymbals etc.) 🤑🤑🤑
@@toojess7521 And his signature drum kit has fur on it 😂
what the f 🤣is he a lowkey fur*** 🤣🤣🤣

The talent out of Japan is insane and in my opinion, the most musically talented place on earth right now. Staying in the Japanese lane, sort of, if you really want a mind-blown experience, check out this track below by Anthony Barone. Even though he's not Japanese (He's American), he's the driving force behind Japan's legendary iconic metal group, Babymetal, and has been since 2018. When he's not touring with Babymetal, he's touring with All That Remains, but Babymetal is his fulltime gig $$$. Anyhow, he's a beast and here is that track: 👇

@DrumRoast wow,nice
This performance by Tatsuya is a bit soft, he's actually the drummer of Crossfaith, his performance of "Leviathan"... now that's really epic.
CROSSFAITH, 'Leviathan':

LEA, 'The Reason We Fight':

Sadly no. I am most impressed by her work with the Ken Okada group featuring Yoyoka. They've cut 2 albums together! She dropped her first album in November with tons of collaborations. Including Narada Michael Walden writing a tune and recording it with her. He is a big deal!

Giving a song what the song needs instead of satisfying your own ego doesn't make anyone a bad drummer. Makes him a drummer who knows what the most important thing of drumming is.
Too much pop drumming show, too few real drumming skills.
I love this video mostly because of his showmanship...I think this video was supposed to be more entertaining for the general audience rather than a drumming audience 🤣
