  • @richig761
    @richig761 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well, Hicks was sober for his entire life aside from a couple of years, so he doesn't exactly fit that mold. Stanhope has arguably lived more throttle than anyone, and he's still around. The difference is, Stanhope didn't fuck with heroin. If Hedberg did the same, he'd probably still be here.

    "If drugs made you a good writer, then why isn't every drug addict a novelist?" WTF?... No one in the history of man has ever said "drugs made me a great writer." or that "drugs made me a great comedian". They simply give it credit for enhancing the creativity that was ALREADY THERE. You've completely misunderstood the point Doug makes when says that. No, not every drunken lush can be a comedian. However, for already talented people, it can enhance their performing abilities.

  • @MrTwatwaffle007
    @MrTwatwaffle007 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ok- norton is right- yes- back in the day it was VERY god driven, and YES- some people use the meeting as a way to push god, that happens. BUT- they do say it doesn't have to be god, it can be an aunt or uncle- ANYTHING you believe that is more powerful and better than you, it could be twinkies- your hero anything. I love Stanhope and he has a very valid argument/ but norton is spot on- it's changed throughout the years- when Stanhope was in it, it was very god driven and that's all he knows, AA was very preachy and sketchy, it's changed, if he went now and had this argument he would get the other point, however he's made a lot of money on his way of looking at it- so I don't see him admitting it's not pure religion driven- you just substitute god for what is best for you to prove your not in control- even if your the higher power, that's fine- they'll go with it as long as your trying to be sober/ that's all that matters.

    • @tomz5704
      @tomz5704 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stanhope say's that too, if I HAVE to believe there's a higher power than me that I can't control, then yes there is, it's called alcohol so I'm right back where I started

  • @bluevelvet772
    @bluevelvet772 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Did jimmy really try to say alcohol makes you beat your wife? He said people don't beat their wives after eating gravy.... well they do! if someone gets drunk and beats a woman it's not the drinks fault but the person who done the beating, and would beat a woman while sober everyday if he could, the alcohol is a scapegoat, and reality is most domestic violence involves alcohol because the abuser is more likely to get caught when drunk and not thinking straight giving the woman a chance to call the police or a neighbour overhearing the incident due to the drunk man being too loud.

    Bill was kind of like George Carlin, in the fact that they both started off as silly and funny, then they became dark, honest, and hilarious. I would say Doug is like Bill Hicks in the fact that he's honest, incredibly talented and hilarious, doesn't give a shit, and is dirt poor.

  • @XmXFLUXmX2
    @XmXFLUXmX2 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bill Hicks didn't really live "full throttle" and if you compare his comedy to when he was drinking around 20+-, to when he was dabbling in psychadelics around 30, it's no comparison: He was much better when he was dabbling in mushrooms and focused on being honest.
    When he was "living full throttle", he was literally getting the shit beat out of him on stage, just like Jim Jefferies.

    • @Tuhajuhan
      @Tuhajuhan 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      anti-establishment isn't such a narrow road to make stanhope and hicks similar. they are different in most ways, the end result of respective comedy styles being the most important - hicks is naive, hippieish and lives on the passion of his performance, stanhope is more down to earth and doesn't believe in people all that much and doesn't partake in a crusade in the manner of hicks.

    • @thegenericlesbians
      @thegenericlesbians 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    • @andrewptob
      @andrewptob 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Benjamin Desroches It's hard to have a large body of work when you die at 32. And as many comics say, they don't hit their stride until they in they're in their 30s and 40s. It's pretty remarkable that Bill Hicks accomplished as much as he did in comedy dying so young.

    Jim's argument on AA is bullshit. The same argument could apply to any quack medicine. His whole counterpoint on the mandatory religion in 12 step programs is purely semantics based. Just because several of the steps are directly based on theistic principals, doesn't mean you have to embrace religion, I think he's questioning his entire life and core philosophy while getting super defensive, desperately trying to justify his ideas. Stanhope is like the Kaiser Reich, Jim is like Belgium, he fought real hard at first, but Stanhope can do this shit all day. Also I disagree about Hedberg, he had to take chances with his brain and chemicals to get that deep, don't impose your fucked up desire to live forever on other people.
