  • THE ODD COUPLE - Chris Broussard & Rob Parker discuss if baseball essentially refusing to acknowledge steroid-era players is unfair, considering what those players achieved and contributed at every level. Mark McGwire had something to say about it and Rob Parker agrees!

They didn't complain about the attention the homerun race between Sosa and Mcgwire. And to play dumb that the league and it writers didnt have an idea it was going on until the Mitchell report? Or the random testing that was supposted to stay private? If you have issues with the era then return the money made during it. If not put Sosa, Bonds, Clemons, Mcwire and the others in. It was cheating to use anabolic steroids. I loved Mark McGwire as a kid. I loved the race between him and Sosa. I was heartbroken when I learned they juiced. And so did a lot of pitchers. MLB is corrupt. They knew it was happening. Now they shun the guys who made the league grow. I don't feel too bad for Big Mac or Bonds or Sosa or anyone cheating who don't make the HOF. Mark is deceiving himself if he think he was hitting 60 or 70 without steroids. He was a 30-49 guy with injuries and then he hit 50+ and then 70 and went from a lean strong hitter to looking like The Rock does today. Some for Bonds and others. I don't think u can tell the story of baseball without Pete Rose either, or the White Sox team from 1919...that doesn't mean they all necessarily belong in the HOF. I think it is VERY fair of Rob Parker to point out MLBs inconsistency and hypocrisy on this issue. Many managers in the steroid era with championships are in the HOF, many pitchers and popular players made it in too. But some guys are getting selectively shunned for life and it's unfair as hell. So I am not saying they deserve the HOF but they should not be treated badly by MLB who knew and profited.

What is the "unfairness" that McGwire referred to? Is it the suspension of players, the HOF banning, or the shunning from the general public?
If he's speaking from the perspective of players being fined, suspended, etc. by the league, I'd agree with him that the rules did not exist on paper so they can't be penalized.
If McGwire is referring to public perception, no one can help him on that one. People don't respect those that are dishonorable. That's life. You can't sucker punch someone and then whine when the crowd doesn't cheer for you. No one is going to respect you even if there were no rules in the fight. If McGwire didn't need the PEDs, why take it? It ENHANCED his performance. That's what it does. That's not to say he couldn't hit HRs without it. I'm just saying it's unlikely he would've hit 70 without it.
The HOF do what they do. I'd agree they're inconsistent and biased. They banned Bonds but not David Ortiz. I would like to see some nuance in how players are judged individually. I know that is difficult thing to do.
I conclusion, we can't justify recent nonsense by stating what supposedly happened in the 70s. "Well everyone was doing it" is never a good response. That sounds childish. Unfortunately, when there is a an issue anywhere in corporate America or in regular day to day life, a few are always selected to be the example. We punish the few to deter others. It happens everywhere. I say expose all players on the Mitchell list but I understand why MLB would not do that. That would be bad for business.

I haven't watched MLB for 13 years and haven't missed it. The handling of the steroid era players is only part of it. The Astros were the final nail in the coffin, but the problems go on long before that. Pete Rose being banned from baseball, yet invited to the All-Star Game when it was in Cincinnati. Joe West, Angel Hernandez, and far too many umpires seeking the spotlight when I shouldn't know who they are. Shoeless Joe Jackson not being reinstated and put in the HOF where he belongs, even though the findings show clearly he didn't throw the 1919 World Series. Teams tanking to leave cities. Now, the games are shorter than ever and more expensive to attend than ever; 81 games on the schedule and one seat in the right field bleachers of Dodger Stadium against a last-place team is $80. You can have it; I've been done.
