    Billy, very insightful your presentation. You make a good point about thermal camera resolution and your use within the capability of the Enterprise Dual. There is a good article in the Model Aviation Magazine put out by AMA this month. The article is entitled "How much thermal camera do you need?". For the uninformed the article will give the neophyte a good understanding of thermal imaging in a two page read i.e. the Enterprise Dual is only 160×120 pixels vs 640×512 for the XT2 used on the DJIM200; contrast these pixels with a 4K camera, 3840×2160. A good presentation by you coupled with this article makes a lot of sense for us neophytes. Thanks!

    I’m a service tech for a large utility company. I can’t begin to tell you how many tools we/I use that are not up to Joe Blows standards. Other things we have surpass what any individual or small company could afford but there is a lot of stuff we use that’s cobbled together and works better than the purposefully built tools could ever hope to.

      Have to agree with this. Sometimes you have to improvise for a specific job. And sometimes you just need to 'splash the cash' to get the right tools (hardware or software) to get the job done.

    Hi Billy, thanks for the good video. A suggestion from my side:
    When you have to put on numbers in post on the color images, why don't you put in the temperatures itself
    ?

    @BillyKyle, you are the man! Thanks for sharing. I'm in the process of doing the same in another city. Did you do the infrared thermo level 1 training from Flir? I think the training would be valuable, but I have a feeling it might possibly be overated. Let's connect!

  • @radink
    @radink 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    As a thermographer, and I have this drone, the IR on this camera isn't great. For roofing, it's ok to pre-check for spots of concern, but you'll still want to do a higher end thermal inspection. You should also know what to look for and be able to tell what is and isn't an possible water anomaly under the membrane. This camera will also not work on certain roof membrane materials. Some of them require an mid-wave thermal camera which is older tech and pricey. The examples in the video are probably not water. For example, roofs that are surfaced with gravel sometimes have more roofing tar showing through. The tar is black, it's going to hold heat longer and show up as hotter on the thermal cam (same with dirty areas). This does not mean there is water there. Another example, if the sun was shining on a roof top unit (those big AC ventilation systems, which are metal) will reflect sunlight and heat back onto the roof surface making it hotter. Even after sundown, these areas will still show hot after a while. Before selling your roof inspections to people, you should really know how commercial roofs are constructed, what the membrane material is and if the building is possibly leaking inside and where those locations might be. Remember, these places with likely do test cuts into the roof to check for moisture based on your report, which is the ONLY way to know 100%. Cutting a roof open and patching it can still open the roof for leaking. The video is good for beginners but there's alot more to consider than what is shown.

    Thanks for the great video. I'm so glad to see that you have a Enterprise dual. I've watched your videos since I starting in the drowning hobby for general information. I've had The Duel since February and have enjoyed it but would like to learn more about it and so far your videos answered a lot of questions for me. One question I have is how accurate is the temperature readings, I've noticed throughout the winter and now into the spring it seems like the temperature readings are lower than what I feel the actual temperature should be. I'm guessing this has to do with how high your flying is there a height where the temperature reading is optimal? I guess I'd like to see a test of if the temperature changes depending on how high you're flying.

    A super video for people wanting to get started in thermal inspection. But is the Mavic 2 enterprise dual the right tool? It looks great for initial surveying. But not something I'd want to use for a detailed inspection. There's some great take-aways here for people getting in to this area: planning your flight, flying during proper weather and daylight windows to avoid solar loading, getting the right colour pallet and providing your customer with a report. One big downside for me is the comment on not being able to export the images in to third party software (Flir tools was mentioned, I use that myself).

    • @billykyle
      @billykyle  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it’s a great start and for the price is an easy buy. Only larger companies that have the budget would be purchasing something like the Matrice with the XT2.

    • @thedoc.6819
      @thedoc.6819 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the original XT camera was better (resolution wise). I already had the dual gimble set up for the Matrice 210. But I have to agree, as a get go, or run and gun configuration, there's something great about it. As a way for getting in to thermal imaging, it's a good place to start. I still worry about your comment concerning the lack of exporting to third party software. I use Flir tools + for fine tuning my images and preparing reports. I'm still just a hobbyist, so yes, the Matrice 210 as a 'big hit' on the budget, as was the price of the XT camera (£15K when I bought it when it came out), and the 3 month wait to get it imported from the USA, and the forms that needed to be filled in for exporting sensitive technology to the UK. But I'm hoping to make my hobby a business, so I'm 'all in' for this stuff. It's great to see you helping people get started flying drones. Just what we need, people with experience passing on just enough knowledge to help everyone else be a safe, responsible flyer!

    I'm looking into doing thermal roof inspections. Is early evening the only time you can do these inspections? If so, that would limit the number of inspections you can do in a week. Or are there ways to do them at other times of days?

    Hey, so I’m wondering when do you usually do the inspections? Does it have to be after rainy day that you can see there moisture, or does sunny day also works? Because I’m thinking it will all be very dry on a sunny day so there won’t be any origin of the moist

    Sorry for the typos...my damn fat arthretic fingers! I meant to say; "the 160 res cameras are just NOT enough to make a crisp presentation . I need to be pretty sure its moisture before I start charging my client for core samples or conversely, if there is moisture but the camera does not have a high enough resolution to pick it up.

    I really wish this drone came with the flir boson. I think DJI missed the boat on this one unfortunately. If the three tools were more integrated and could be used at the same time and the m2e dual was equipped with a decent flir camera I would definitely buy it. However I understand they were after a certain market and these upgrades would demand a much higher price.

    • @billykyle

      No, you need a special kind of camera.

    • @thedoc.6819
      @thedoc.6819 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll need a drone with changeable cameras or one like in the video as with a built in thermal camera. If you're a fan of DJI products, then you'd probably be looking at an Inspire 1 v2 as a base model. But then as Billy said in the video, we're talking serious cash. I've had the first DJI XT camera for 18 months. It's a great piece of kit, but to make money from the images, you need everything else.

    Hi Billy,
    Thanks for the video. To be honest, I would have to question the viability of the enterprise Dual for these thermal inspections as werll. I am a "certified" professional roof consultant, thermographer and drone operator...I own a Mavic 2 Pro. My question as well, would be resolution. Those that are not trained or at least well aqcuainted with the chacteristics of thermal imaging can be easily impressed with the striking contrast, and assume every image is indicating moisture. There are many nuances to a structure, especially the roof, and its very easy to misread false positive. Its easy to show a client a thermal image and let them think its moisture, when it very possibly is not (I am referring moresoe to the roofing contracator or evenmore to the roof consultants). The reponsibility is on the Roof Consultant to know how to read thermography. However, as I said, I am certainly open to using the dual if it meets the muster. With that said, what is the actual resolution? The minimum I would use on a Flir hand held is the E8 which is 320 x 240. The 160 res. just enough to make a crisp presentation. My other question is software compatability; is the dual thermal imaging compatible with Flir Tools or Tools plus software? A
    Again, I thank you for your vids, very informative and educational. You held me a lot when I first obtained my Mavis 2 Pro. Take care and fly safe, N.M.
