Thanks all of you, for this wondefull tribute!!! I write from Madrid (Spain). We loved Phil's songs, and his commitment with all social and political causes regarding Witch the social justice in the world, from Vietnam to Cuba, from Chile to Spain... We won't forget his song about Spanish Civil War... Salud!!!

My poor dude. My final project in 2005 at my high school graduation was a celebration of his life and goals and I performed 4 of his songs. I ended with Hills of West Virginia and Boy in Ohio

Wonderful to hear about! Love Boy in Ohio. I pair it with Gram Parsons' Hickory Wind as parallel in their yearning for the happiness of younger years.

I met Phil, first, at a Gene McCarthy rally when I was 16, at Tiger Stadium. I was working for Gene. I remember he was at every big demonstration I went to, usually for free. I loved seeing him. I still have all his LPs and now CDs.

Please answer this question. Do you stand with the Republicans or the Democrats today?

Just discovered this lovely tribute. I was fortunate enough to see Phil Ochs twice, both in Ann Arbor, while I was a student at University or Michigan. He sang a song or two at the Free John Sinclair rally. Great. He was my folk hero. Some time later he sang at a benefit “Impeach Nixon” concert. By that time he seemed to be in bad shape, even forgetting the lyrics to some of his songs like “Changes.” It was quite sad. I chatted a bit with him afterwards but he was ‘out of it’ and obviously his mind was elsewhere. I do so wish he’d have gotten the help he needed and could be around today. He’d surely find inspiration for more songwriting in these troubled times….

Phil's sister and brother tried hard to get him help for his bipolar disorder, but Phil resisted. His brother said that he was in a valley and just couldn't find his way out. So bright, so talented, so brave and committed. I remember reading he was gone; couldn't believe it.

Phil had an otherworldly view of life. His lyrics were true and reflective. I wish I could have seen him perform.
He was a shooting star and was only meant to be here a short time.

I have a copy of the article from Wittenberg University archives. I can’t upload it here. Could send it to the Woody Guthrie Center. Let me know.

What a great tribute to a really great American singer/"topical songwriter"! I wish more people would view this to either remember Phil's legacy or become introduced to his work. For me, he transcends Dylan, Guthrie and Seeger, and I cherish his beautiful/witty/angry/sarcastic/rousing/lilting and yes: inciteful songs and place him in my personal folk pantheon with John Stewart. . .

I have never compared Phil to Guthrie or Seeger, both of whom I have loved and admired for many decades but much as I love Dylan while he remained a folksinger, I always felt Phil was a better songwriter and singer. I only wish I had heard about him before his death.

Saw him live on 3/31/68 at Queens College Colden Audutorium in NYC. He sang "I declare the war is over" and when I arrived at home, I learned that Pres. Johnson had dropped out of the race while I was at his concert.

Many years ago, my spouse, Len Wallace was privileged to sing at the funeral for activist/CAW local 444 union leader Larry Bauer from Windsor, Ontario. What did Len sing? "When I'm Gone". After Len finished with a swirl of accordion chords, the then National President, Bob White stood up, applauding and said, "That was Larry; now we can all go home." There were more speeches, anyway. Mind, Larry's death was "so big" -- the funeral was broadcasted on CKLW, there were workers lining the streets on the way to the cemetery. Larry was a struggler. Motorcycle riding, often profane, but bargained days off for women in struggle against abusers and faced down those who didn't want "pension splitting" for CAW spouses. Even bargained same-sex benefits. Mind, at first glance, Larry seemed "retrograde". Then again, he pushed limits and was all about, "Hey, if you work, no one should take anything away." Not a romantic. Phil would have loved him -- they could have swapped leather jackets and anger.

I listened to WBAI one night when Phil predicted the Nixon would be impeached. Sadly, Phil did not live to see nixon's downfall.

    • @thecoop3230

WBAI, I really don't listen much however, my partner enjoys Gary knoll. What is obvious is that nothing changes. Phil's words ring stronger today then they did then. Let's hear again Mississippi!
      What is happening??

I’m just shocked as I believe Phil would be..at the veils over the eyes and how you lost your way how your ignorance of the true agenda unrolling …you will likely make phil turn over in His grave…how much pain have you contributed to and freedom lost by promoting the current propaganda agenda!…that being said how wonderful the talent and music was exhibited here
