    I want to add some observations about Privacy because I find it very interesting! In the video I noted how I got notifications about 'Superstore', and how I saw the news article about 'Veep' hours after watching an episode. What is very interesting is when I watched both shows it was in Chrome on Windows. I watched an entire season of 'Wrecked' This summer on Safari inmacOS Mojave and I never saw a peep about it on the Pixel. This is hardly conclusive evidence, but it's certainly very interesting from an observational standpoint.

    • @dpdxA
      @dpdxA 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I enjoyed you video - very nice job.
      Others have suggested using DuckDuckGo. Another way to is to take Google out of the picture altogether. I don't use the Google Chrome browser and don't use Google search directly either. I use the Firefox browser because it is highly configurable with extensions. I added the StartPage.com search engine to Firefox configured to use the EU search engines ("Startpage (20 EU no-filter)" in #11 Undefined here: mycroftproject.com/search-engines.html?name=startpage ) as my default search engine in Firefox. Startpage will query Google for results but will mask your IP address so searches can't be tracked. This will add a slight amount of latency to your searches though (round trip searches to Europe). I think the EU standards for privacy are way stronger than ours here in the US so I'm willing to deal with a bit of latency on searches.

      If you used the same email that you use on chrome in windows it automatically links the cookies and history to your phone giving you the notification that a new episode is airing. And a new feature with the newer versions of android if you have location on and go to a restaurant or even drive pass one you will receive notifications about the place. It is easily turned off it you do not like the option of having it on.

    Just because Apple doesn’t use the data it collects from you to further tune your experience like pixel does, it doesn’t mean it never collects that data. I find when I walk by a place and it showing me reviews right away or gives me articles more focused to me cuts out time scrolling through content I don’t want to see.

    • @kikiwora
      @kikiwora 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Apple does use the data it collect to tune your experience, but does not use it as a money source by doing whatever it want to do with your data, like Google does.
      For Google you aren't a user - you're just a data source and money source, nothing more. That's why Google does not have a support at all.
      Try, for example, to find a support button on TH-cam - you will never find it, cause there is not one.
      Google is just going worse and worse every fucking year, collecting more and more data and using it for it's own benefit.

      @Roman Suvorov - Look up the definition of what a "business" is and realize that Google is just that.
      First, Google doesn't sell data directly, it sells ads and aggregated statistics (the same as Apple). Selling the data doesn't make business sense since they make more money by keeping the data for themselves and selling their advertising services to corporations.
      Second, judging from how much better TH-cam, Google Maps and Google Search are compared to the competition, the data it collects does seem to be put to good use. We get quality services, while they get data to provide directed ads and model consumer behavior. That is the exchange. If you think it's not a fair deal, then stop using the services and get off the platform.
      For the rest of us, we will quit the platform when a better alternative comes along.

  •  6 ปีที่แล้ว +87

    You did give permission before Google started tracking your data. You did this when you were setting up the phone and going through a number of prompts asking about your personalization and privacy preferences. However, since you're already on Chrome for Windows, this has been going on even before you had the phone. It's just that the phone is more actively showing you relevant suggestions based on those data.

  • @beezbuzzful
    @beezbuzzful 6 ปีที่แล้ว +311

    Those who are concerned about Googles privacy policy, you can opt out of tracking during setup, and if you didn't opt out during setup you can still disable it. It's no different than Siri tracking you or IOS apps using your location. Google tracking is part of their machine learning. Any data that Google collects is encrypted.

      @@ablgmv Despite what most people are saying, the notch is NOT as big as they make it out to be and just as iPhone users get used to their notch, you get used to this one too. I measured and the Pixel notch is actually only 1/8th inch deeper than the iPhones. Look at a ruler and see just what a difference that really is. Also, if the notch really gets you, there are two alternatives until Google comes up with a better option. You can 1) turn the notch off in Developer Options which makes the Pixel 3 XL screen look exactly like the Pixel 3 (with no notch) but will still be a bigger screen than the Pixel 3; or 2) there is an app in the Google Play store called Nacho Notch that turns the "ears" of the notch area black so you still get the icons in the "ears" area, but the top of the notch area is all black. You can even round the top corners so make it look like the phone was designed that way. Google should actually implement this idea as the default view in an update. Otherwise, I don't mind the notch at all. I've gotten used to it already.

    I switched to iOS from Android a couple of years ago. Although I like iOS a lot, one key Android feature I miss is the ability to have an incoming phone call not take up the entire screen and completely interrupt whatever I was doing - like watching a video. On Android, incoming calls show up like a banner at the top of the device. Videos keep playing and you can choose to either take or decline the call without missing a beat. iOS needs to update their outdated phone app to support this feature. It’s so simple, yet super convenient

      Better video recording yes, but unless you're a youtuber/vlogger/videographer, I don't see the point; you are much more likely to want a good selfie/picture than a video.
      Updates over a long time - yes, that is better by 2 years. Agreed. Though I must ask, how long do you plan to keep a phone as your daily driver these days? 5 years is a long time.
      Ram management is better because the XR has a lower resolution screen, it pushes far fewer pixels.
      Build quality is the only one I agree with, but then I look at the Oneplus 6t, and I just say FUCK APPLE.
      Ecosystem, as I've previously stated, is really good because your already deep in it. For someone who doesn't have a single Apple product, the thought of the amount of Apple Tax I'll have to pay each time I want to add to that ecosystem will haunt me.
      Individual benefits are one thing, but if you put unbalanced components together, you'll get a failed product. For example, I'll never buy a laptop with a 144Hz screen and a GTX 1050. A 1050 can never play any game in the last 2 years and every year going forward above 60 fps. No game except cs:go will reach 144Hz. No point.
      My problem isn't that the Google Pixel 3 is perfect, it isn't. But we hold Google accountable for that. Fanboys don't do the same for Apple.
      And you'll never talk about things like the repair costs, or how the sapphire on the camera lens is inferior sapphire that is no better than glass at preventing scratches. Or how difficult it actually is to rely only on face unlock, or how the new ipad pro now comes bent out of the box and apple just showed you the middle finger, or how many apple fans believe they don't need more than a 720p screen because apple won't sell a device with it, or how you need to pay a premium for the fast charger or the wireless charger, or how Apple started the headphone jack dongle trend and the notch trend, or how they still slow down older phones (iphone 7 being the most recent victim), or how the charging percentage in the iphone is actually modified to slow down at higher percentages to make it seem like you have more charge than you actually do, or so on... I get news/articles on things I've been looking up I just find it convenient. I don't see that as a privacy breach. A privacy breach would be if my personal info i.e. my personal pictures/conversations and financial information were posted for the public to see. That doesn't happen unless I want it shared. I realize you said these were your opinions, but there are a couple things you did not take into account when speaking about iMessage.
    First, Google is attempting to change things by introducing RMS. For a few months now, I get delivery notifications, even when sending messages to iPhone users on various carriers.
    Second, messages.android.com allows you to send and receive text messages on your computer, whether it be Mac, Windows, or anything else. That is the thing I hate most about Apple. the lack of support for using their ecosystem on any device not made by Apple. Moreover, messages.android.com does not cause any issues that iMessages causes. The only drawback is that, so far, it only works with Google's messaging app on Android.

    Yeah so you should've definitely compared the Pixel 3 to the XS, not the budget XR. The single camera on the P3 is in my opinion taking better shots than the dual cameras on the XS, with optical vs digital zoom being an exception. Here the XS has a slight edge with the dedicated 2nd camera. I also just tested night sight on my 2XL and it's astonishing what Google's doing with that software.
    As you also mentioned, the XR has a lower res, ips panel, which is another reason to not compare it with the P3. It's hard justifying the XS price point when you can get a P3 for 20% less. In Europe the situation is different with the P3 selling for 850€, while the XS is 1150€. Ridiculous difference.

    Google's tracking of its users location, browsing and search history are what make up their ecosystem. DUH! Is any of that information something that could harm you in anyway? If they get hacked perhaps it could... doubt it. But the user tracking makes some things incredibly useful and other things annoyances. It can ALL be controlled with your devices and you go have to agree to their terms when setting up a Google account and Google devices. Luke mentioned he didn't give permission to Google. I beg to differ... you simply did not read the information displayed to you when setting up that Pixel phone and Google account. Don't blame someone else when you don't take the time to read information that is given to you.
    My Pixel tells me the fastest route to take to work and back home each day. The route time estimates are almost always accurate within a minute or two. If I get annoyed at notifications or stories on my feed that I don't want, I can stop them easily. It does take time and a little effort but once you get it set to your liking, it's very useful to have the information you need at a glance or by asking your phone for it.

  • @DyadintheForce
    @DyadintheForce 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    10:00 let me try to assure your concerns on the privacy front because I know a lot of people don't read even a a fraction of a percent of what they agree to half the time. When you first sign into your Google account on any Android, and I know this as an Android user as well as having set up a new Pixel 3 recently, it asks you whether you want location history and tracking. Google also asks you when you use Chrome for the first time if you want to send usage statistics to improve your browsing experience. Sorry, but if you don't read the TOS or any fine print and just hit agree to everything then complain, that's just your own fault.

    May need to give it some more time, some of the stuff you said you like about iOS are things I do every day on my Pixel.
    For example, scrubbing by pushing down on the keyboard rather than screen taps and gestures. Your GBoard keyboard does this by default, just press and hold on the space bar to activate it then scrub through the text.
    Messaging on a computer... Android has an even better implementation than iMessage in my opinion. It's web based and runs in any browser on your PC or Mac. Just click the three dot menu (top right) in Messages on your phone, then choose "Messages for Web". A quick scan of the QR code on the web page with your phone and it syncs up. Even has the option to work remotely over data instead of requiring a Wifi Connection.
    Photos and Videos over messaging service - iMessage actually DOES compress photos and videos, it just does so much less than SMS does. That being said, images look great and high quality over texts on Android. Videos are really the only issue, but (besides using 3rd party messaging apps) you do get unlimited storage for truly uncompressed pictures/video (even 4K) that can be shared via the Photos app and viewed by the end user on a browser or with a quick app download. Google Photos is actually much better IMO for sharing albums w/ friends and family than iCloud is.
    A lot of times if you're receiving messages on iMessages on your computer after disabling it on your phone, they are probably sending to your email address not your phone number. You can also use a deregister form on Apple's website to remove your number from iMessage.
    Tracking and notifications - you actually did have an option to disable this when you first set the phone up. But if you didn't disable those services because you were excited and click next next skip next to get to the home screen you can't blame Google for using data to make your experience more convenient.
    I too switched over to a Pixel recently (from an iPhone X).

    Great summary, I totally concur (switched from iOS to Pixel XL 2 years ago, and then Pixel 2 a year ago). IMessage issues are still occasional killers with missed texts or scaled down pics/vids or not being able to participate in shared Photo albums, since everyone in my world uses iOS.
    Battery life is different too, so your usage pattern could make one better than the other. My Pixel 2 has always had poor battery life, but the built-in fast USB-C charging is amazing and lets me top off throughout the day in no time. But if I am going out for the day and away from being able to charge, it wouldn’t get me much past lunch. I know iOS charges annoyingly slow compared to fast USB-C, but it can at least get through most of a day if you are away from a wall or car charger, unlike Pixel.
    For these reasons, I am switching back to iOS after 2 years. Blue XR is arriving today. Bittersweet, since I will miss the amazing display and camera of Pixel 2 in certain situations and the Google Assistant is SO vastly superior to Siri (as evidenced by my talking to my phone throughout the day while never hearing any of my iPhone family members talking to theirs outside of phone calls), but the majority of my usage will likely result in my never being to tell the difference. Being back in iOS ecosystem with the new phone, along with the iPad I still use everyday, will be more than worth it.

    Hey Luke,
    Just so you know, you can scrub through text using the space key on the onscreen keyboard. Run your finger back and forth on it and it'll happen.
    And yeah, Google's "guesses" are spooky. They're the best at that machine learning stuff (having literally built tensor hardware, software APIs, etc.), with most other companies trying to catch up. Rest assured though, your privacy is between you and Google's computers, just like how it is on your iPhone - between you and Apple's computers. Google won't be giving up their position as gatekeeper - they won't be giving away or selling your info to anyone. They sell the service of targeting ads properly.
    I suspect you may have clicked past a privacy thing either on your computer or on the phone as you set it up. Google services periodically prompt me to accept a new agreement when I sign in, and I keep rejecting their requests. There is a privacy area on their website where you can control this stuff though, if you accidentally enabled it.
    The first thing I did when I got my Pixel was go in and disable all the tracking, GPS, random AI stuff, etc.; I just wanted that sweet point and shoot camera that could deal with very challenging lighting, and a stripped down no-bloat phone.

I really do dig the Pixel phone line, but if you are a user coming from a very old phone (3-4 years) and want your next phone to also go the distance, I don't think this phone is for you (or me in this case). Seems like a small incremental upgrade and I don't think that the HW will be able to hold up against the test of time vs other flagship phones right now. Makes me sad since I feel like I have to wait for the next one and hope that its more of an upgrade then this one. I wish they would upgrade there HW every 6 months (if needed) lke OnePlus does with there T line.

    I used the iOS platform for a long time, then I switched to Android and stayed there for a few years and now I am back to iphone. I had the note. 9 and there was a lot of things that bothered me that I won’t get into but I sold it and got the iPhone X S Max. I do miss some features of the note I have to say, but overall I am very very happy with apple. I hate that there is no headphone jack, totally hate that, but I have heard android are following and will soon all eliminate the headphone jack. So I have to accept it I guess. The performance and camera of the iphone is pretty perfect smooth, but I still do like Android. I would like to have both phones and just switch sims when I get restless for the other one, lol. But I can’t do that practically. I think both are decent phones and both have their pros and cons, it is a matter of personal preference as you said in this video. Thank you for posting and sharing your opinions. It is good to see what others appreciate and don’t appreciate from both sides. Merry Christmas!

    comparing phones based on their price point ? It's obvious that google pixel gives you more bang for your buck. It's not a "budget" model like the xr is for apple. Pixel is a flagship en should be compared to the iphone xs, And no i'm not a android fanboy, I have an iphone 8

    • @bruxi78230

      Nigel S ---- Apple sells five current iPhones. XR is in the middle. It is not the budget model, in the middle means mid-range.

    • @bruxi78230

      @@conalldayton --- When talking about the high-end there are 3 price ranges that are tracked by research companies. From 400-600, 600-800, and 800 plus. Obviously the XR is in the middle of those 3. Early indications are that XR is not only Apple's highest selling phone, but the highest of any company in the mobile industry. The most important spec is the SoC and the XR surprised by having the A12, which is 2 years ahead of anything from Android world.
      So I guess your theory about low-end specs are something you made up. The market talks to us through numbers and you're just making up theories based on nothing but opinion.

    • @conalldayton
      @conalldayton 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bruxi78230 not entirely probably a little though because I'm tired of hearing all these iPhone users place their phones on such a high pedestal just because that's their OPINION. Hell yes, that A12 works wonders but what's the point if the camera doesn't even compare to a phone like the pixel or the absolutely atrocious screen resolution on a terrible IPS display? My point is this phone is not close to worth $750 US. Not saying the pixel is worth it's $800 it's not. But it offers a much better deal than the XR, you get a high end processor, decent RAM when combined with google's software makes the phones pretty much the same speed, sure there will be discrepancies but all top tier phones are unbelievably fast now days, so what's the point. Over all an Android will give you way better value for your dollar than any iPhone. Not to mention beautiful phones like the OnePlus 6t, this phone competes with all flagships for half their price. And it runs Android.
      In the above post I should have specified more, it's in the high end of the mid teir

      @@conalldayton ---- Specs are what we discuss here on TH-cam comments, but I actually don't think most users whether Android or iPhone really care or understand that much about them. I'll tell you about an experience I had recently. I visited Frankfurt and Munich and went to the Apple Store in both places. This was mid-November. I happened to be standing near the XR table in both stores. I've never witnessed such a sales frenzy in my life. There were 2 Apple store employees dedicated to running back and forth from warehouse to the sales area bringing the XRs. The XR were absolutely flying out of the store. Many customers were buying 2 and 3 at a time for all the kids in their families. It's valid that you don't consider them worthwhile for your own use, but the market has embraced the XR in a way that is even surprising to me.

You can stop them collecting data altogether and delete all your old data from there. The reason it's giving you programme updates is 'Web and App Activity', pause that collection and delete the data, that will stop. Not sure if you realize this, but when you're using iMessage with all of your other iPhone friends, you aren't actually using SMS. You're using a chat service closer related to Google Hangouts, where you can send uncompressed images and videos, etc. So comparing iMessage to Android Messages is a little backwards. One is primarily a non-SMS chat service, another is limited by the standard features of SMS.

They've built a premium phone with an exceptional camera and AI but since it is not priced $1000 you consider it inferior to XS. I call it good damn optimization and integration!!!...I don't get it man...I cannot count how many times I have wanted something that figures out what I like and shows me stuff of my interest without me having to look for that information! This is amazing that it can go back and know immediately so many things that you like instead of having to start from scratch and you having to educate your phone!! Do you really believe google gives a damn about what burger you like or not? NO they dont give a damn. They just offer you the feature in the phone so you can benefit from it...that's it...how many toilet paper you buy is NOT privacy...it is useless information for everybody except for you when you do grocery...this is why the phone helps you with that lol
