I love being a "fisher of men" & not speaking to the choir, like that "wicked generation seeking signs". I know why you wonder about others, you can't admit your embarrassing situation, having one foot in fantasyland. Believers lack any sense of shame, if God existed, then we would all be believers, because that would be God's will. Christians are to be mocked, for all their expressed knowing of God. Freud wrote, "The antidote to Christianity is literacy", Rome won the war of the Jews, so Jesus is hanging from a tree for 2000 years. The Christian home is in Rome, not Jerusalem. If there were any remembrance of Jesus Christ, The Romans would have obliterated it, and you would hear the mocking of a son of a Jewish God. "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, cursed is everyone that hangeth on a tree:" Galatians 3:13
Spot on, as always. When your channel started I would often receive unsolicited, hateful comments from Christians. Could it be that Christians have learned to respect the opinions and choices of others? Nah, I think the sods realised that they are in the wrong place and pi$$ed off back to their holes.
As you berate the scripture like Brandon does.. shame on you. A failed attempt of someone teaching from the Bible his pretentious born again Christian Bible upbringing. It’s why he never answers me at all because I actually am a Born Again Christian who was baptized in the Holy Spirit unlike himself. He doesn’t even understand what he is doing by leading overs astray like himself and trying to explain away God but to what end?? But many will sell their souls to make a bit of money while putting enmity between themselves and thy God and it’s unfortunate. None of us have the power to explain away God and it’s a ridiculous notion on his behalf. God gives all of us the same measure of Faith to understand God with Romans12v3 so that one cannot boast that he knows God and people will have to come to him. He says a mixture of truth and at times non truths so I definitely know he never was a born again Christian. I truly feel sorry for him because he doesn’t know what he does! As one who has seen the miraculous in his life as I have , God is VERY REAL but many think God is as fake as believing in the tooth fairy and that is indeed unfortunate. So believe what he says at your own detriment because many do and defend everything he says as if it’s all true because they themselves are in the same position he is. The blind leading the blind comes to mind as many allow themselves to be caught up in whatever they choose or not choose to be caught up in. Either there is a God, or there isn’t and I bet my LIFE that there is and are like others who if they had to , would lay my life down unlike pretend Christians who would never do such a thing. Martyrs have died over the course of mankind and what’s interesting is those watching the martyrdom became believers themselves and were martyred right alongside them as well. But many mock Christianity today and I guess things don’t really change but ONE day everything will be renewed and all will see thy God and it will suddenly occur, believe it .. or not.
I have turned mindshift into a every Sunday occurrence. Still healing from religious abuse. When I feel ashamed of my sexuality this is the only thing that keeps me centered.
The bible can be fun. So she [Ruth] went down to the threshing floor (Libra/Scales of Justice/Harvest) and did everything her mother-in-law [Naomi] told her to do. When Boaz had finished eating and drinking and was in good spirits, he went over to lie down at the far end of the grain pile. Ruth approached quietly, uncovered his feet (PHALLUS) and lay down. - Ruth 3:6-7 Making an oath or swearing to god involved holding the phallus. Matthew 28:9 And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.
If the Bible is not true, why are you obsessed with it? It is like an itch that you cannot scratch. My your restless, tormented soul find rest in Christ. He died on a Cross so that you may know Him. Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

I was in the military (Air Force retired vet) and I got a practical understanding of the difference between peacemaker and peacekeeper. We had a smart bomb that we nicknamed 'The Peacemaker.' In other words, we were 'making peace' by ridding the world of it's troubling neighbors when diplomacy fails (peacekeeping). So with this insight I realized that I was 'blessed' for being a 'peacemaker' and was called a child of God. It totally changed my view of a gentle Jesus.
If this book was a commission for a patron, a patron called Theophilus of all things, that guy is clearly Greek. That entire half of the Roman or Empire at the time was predominantly Greek speaking In the major cities, whereas people that lived out in the country would still speak their native languages like Aramaic or Coptic, for instance, so it makes sense that the educated and well-off, would be Greek speaking citizens. In which case, if the goal of Luke was to make the religion a lot more palatable to your standard Roman citizens of the time, then it definitely stands to reason that that author would go out of their way to not make the Romans look like complete villains. Thank you as always for educating us. I've said it once, and I'll keep saying it, but I've learned more about the Bible from you than anyone else.
I've never heard rhat interpretation of the parable of the talents! So insightful. All I was ever taught was that i needed to do more and give more for the kingdom. Now, even the word "kingdom" has new meaning!
Matthew 6.33. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Luke 17.20-21. And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, the kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you. 1 Corinthians 3:16. Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? This is the temple of God that Solomon, the sun, builds every year and every temple in the bible.
Hi Brandon, I just found your channel about a week ago. I am questioning my entire upbringing, being raised as a Fundamental Baptist and my father was a pastor my entire life. This is a very scary process and one I truly never thought I’d find myself in. As much as I’m starting to see things for what they really are, I’m still hanging on out of fear that maybe I’m wrong and I will burn in hell. Your videos are really resonating with me on SO many levels, it actually scares me. My entire life’s world view is on the cusp of collapsing. Just wanted to tell you thank you for your sensitivity to the Christian, I can tell you truly understand what we are going through. It’s very painful, stressful, and terrifying to face this.
@mai72-jc4cg thank you for sharing that. Yes my father did not think Catholics had the correct doctrine, so just another discrepancy even within the Christian religion. I was raised from birth to believe we had it right and everyone else was lost and we had to reach them for Christ. I did wonder sometimes how I was so lucky to be born into a family that had the “truth”. Until time after time after time, decade after decade, when I was doing what I had been taught to do my entire life which is to have faith, trust in God, rely on God, cast all my cares, believe believe believe, pray pray pray…nothing got better. Things stayed the same and in many cases, got worse. I’m 45 years old now and I’m just having a hard time swallowing this anymore. I’ve been doing my part, God has not held up his end of the deal. Too many times I’ve been nearly crushed by the weight of life and begged God to intervene and when he didn’t, I was supposed to take it as his sovereign will, my unbelief, my lack of faith, he’s drawing me closer; he’s making me more like Christ, lean not on my own understanding, his ways are higher…and on and on and on. Never in my wildest imagination would I think I’d ever listen to these types of videos. Atheists were literally scary to me. They were “Godless people”. Puppets of Satan. And here I am devouring these videos. It’s quite conflicting.

Great question: who would have paid Luke to write the Gospel? Of course, claiming that Christ is God would get you killed. What motive is there for the disciples to claim Christ rose from the dead unless He actually did? Certainly not money nor popularity. Christ died on a Cross then rose again that we may know Him. Jesus Christ is the light of the world.
@@kenshiloh What motive? Religion is power. The Jesus cult had a slave mentality. A ready made army. Brandon says its odd for a social justice warrior to also be a warlord, but you know who does that? Rebellions. The Romans were very interested in rebellious factions. And history shows us the Romans took over the Jesus cult, becoming ever more influential, while the Jews got left out.
@@Badficwriter Bible skeptic Bart Ehrman claims that Mark was written around AD 55, yet, what motive was there? Certainly, in the fourth century, Rome took over and made the Christian faith about power. Yet, earlier on, claiming Jesus was God in the flesh was repugnant to the Jews and the Greeks did not care about this Jewish messiah. There is no earthly motive to write the gospels; it just got the disciples killed. Yet, the Christian faith cannot be used for power if people have the Bible. For example, Jesus said that we should not 'lord it over people', but to be a 'servant of all.' Jesus also said that we should love our neighbor as ourselves, that we should treat others how we would be treated. It is impossible to obey Christ and use the Bible for power. However, be careful! You are in danger of standing before God as a wretched criminal. For example, if you have lied or stolen, you will be tried as a lying thief. Heaven is real, but so is hell. Yet, Christ died on a Cross so that you may know Him. Jesus Christ is the light of the world.
Where does the author of Luke claim Jesus was a God? Luke is just collecting stories that are floating around about Jesus and creating a cohesive narrative. Whoever commissioned the gospel of Luke was already aware of all these stories, the Romans were already aware of these stories floating around. Luke just took them all and put them into one book. This would be like me repeating a story about how some man went 186 mph down the highway and then the police writing me a speeding ticket.
I think it was you who hosted Joshua Bowen and recommended his book "The Atheist Handbook to the Old Testament". I got both part I and II, listening to Part I now (audiobook) and I love it. Thanks so much!
I was always struck by the differences in Luke and Mark. Mark tells a very concise story that is not elegant, while Luke even turns John the Baptist into a blood relation to Jesus. Luke also talks about the Good Thief who is crucified with Jesus, whereas in Mark (and also Matthew) the two men crucified with him berate and abuse him. Everything in Luke seems to have been written as though Luke was remote and omniscient. And trying to tie everything together
Even when I was religious, it felt like Luke was the most blatantly specifically written for its intended audience. Maybe it was all just me, but I was never able to shake the feeling that such an obvious rewrite does not do the story, Jesus or not, any favors. I don't know, maybe it's from growing up in Texas and hearing the "Lost Cause" narrative all the time despite seeing all of the evidence to the contrary, which will cause one to either A) willingly suspend and then expel any and all critical thinking in order to let a monster lead them over the cliff with no rope or bungee cord to be anchored with, or B) GTFA from such an environment and social circle because actually being accurate and correct helps with individual and societal survival and well-being. And let's just say that my folks would absolutely have preferred that I went with A).
You know, I'd never equated the Lost Cause and the Jesus story - but they ARE very similar in structure and meaning. Thanks so much for pointing that out, it helps me make sense of people who seem mindlessly devoted to both.
Brandon. Your take down on Luke was so educational. I wish you would make and sell your transcripts of your episodes. I would buy every episode of the New Testament ( and your Old Testament episodes) 👍🏼
One verse I never understood when I was a Christian was Matthew 11:23 “And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.” If you know the sodom and gamorrah story you know that Abraham asks God to spare the cities and God says if there are 10 righteous people, he will spare the city. And God finds less than 10 (I don’t know why Abraham stops at 10 whatever I guess 😂) but Jesus is literally admitting that if there were miracles being done to Sodom and Gamorrah, they would’ve been saved. So people would’ve believed in God and been righteous, but who cares about those people I guess 🤷♂️ so much for not wanting anyone to perish.
As the concept of an allegedly all powerful god needing a sacrifice, in order to amend his own laws, never made any sense to me, the case for Jesus Christ was always very weak. We can’t even compare the original word-of-mouth claims, against the later written claims. As there is no evidence to demonstrate that Jesus Christ had supernatural powers, and, as his alleged words cannot be fact-checked, the claims are a write-off.
Love your stuff! And these Secular Bible Studies!! Do you think you'll go through some of the Apocrypha, particularly Gospel of Thomas and compare them to these canon gospels? I think it would be interesting to note what the Church didn't want Jesus to be associated with. Thanks!! :)
In contradictions between the infancy narratives of Matthew and Luke, Matthew has Jesus born sometime shortly before the death of Herod the Great, who died in 4 BCE, while Luke has him born sometime after Quirinius became governor of Syria, which happened in 6 CE. These two dates are a minimum of ten years apart. Additionally, in Matthew, the genealogy of Joseph, husband of Mary, lists his father as Jacob, descended from David's son Solomon, while in Luke, his father is listed as Heli, descended from David's son Nathan.
Also Jesus' parents were living in the town of Nazareth in Galilee and would not have been part of the census of Qurinius which covered Judea. Judea was seperated from Galilee by Samaria. They defied logic so hard to try to get Jesus born in Bethlehem.
@@BluStarGalaxy and as pointed out in the video: no census of any kind would have people register in the domicile of an arbitrary ancestor from 1,000 years ago. That's not how a census works.
@@DataDr0id Yep. Defies the whole point of a census. They taxed people and did a census where they people lived. Requiring them to travel to their ancestors birth makes no sense. Also Luke says that the whole world, Roman Empire, did this, yet there is no record of this event.
it's kind of silly how they want to have Joseph be a descendant of David, he's just his stepdad anyways, his biological father was god... this would explain why jezus had a hebrew mom but was white, blond with blue eyes, his pa was invisible, that gives a paler look to people.
@@marcdc6809 And he thought the Messiah had to be born from a virgin because of the greek translation of Isaiah. So he was not a descendant of King David and cannot be the messiah. So damn funny.
My favorite description of Luke is it is the Alternative Facts Gospel. On the division part, the response to me by Christians was that Jesus would be such a controversial figure he causes division by his teachings. Never mind that that isn't in the text itself, but apparently that division is one that causes violence by the sword. How can the Prince Of Peace at all be the one that causes violence, over a difference of teachings? Where is the call to live in solidarity? Humans constantly call for it despite our differences, yet God can't call for it? No wonder so many Christians are extremists that create an us vs them environment.
The two divisions are found at the spring equinox and the autumn equinox. Genesis one makes the division at the spring equinox with "Let there be light."
A lot became clear to me when I found out that Yahweh was originally the god of war in the Canaanite pantheon (of about 80 gods). So much of the Abrahamic religions seem based on killing the enemy -- the enemy being anyone who isn't in our special chosen group. Even the "war on ourselves" is unproductive, because punishment actually doesn't lead to reform in any automatic way. Instead, it tends to lead to going around and around on the same issue.
@@sundayoliver3147 Keep in mind that Jesus personified the sun going through 12 signs as does so many other bible characters. Jesus never "lives" longer than 12 months. Then we start all over with a fresh 12 signs. Remember where he goes into the temple of god at the age of 12. This is 12 months and 12 signs. The temple is the seven signs of a new year/new beginning..

Love your channel. As a former Christian I can say that you are pointing out a lot of the things on your channel that caused me to stop believing. I remember having to tell my wife that I no longer wanted to go to church anymore because it just didn't make sense. The thing that made it no longer make sense was the fact that I read the Bible twice (that's 2 more times than most "Christians") from start to finish.
Brandon, you have created what has become my favorite Bible study series that I've found on TH-cam. I've been watching since you guested on Paulogia, and I'm finally commenting to try throw some more light on this one through the almighty algorithm. Love what you've made so far and wishing you the best as you keep moving forward. I know it's probably a better fit on your year review video, but I wanted to say that I am sure the community you're building here would totally be fine if you ever wanted to change your upload schedule to get more consistent views in the future. On another note related to a comment you made in that video about branching out into other areas of religion, I would love to see a video on existentialist religious philosophies and experiences to here your views on them. The concept of individually driven religious experiences that shun attempts to prove themselves is one that I don't really see a lot of discussion of in skeptic spaces because we tend to focus so strongly on what *can* be proven. If nothing else, you could make a Kierkegaard book review-now that would be awesome to see!

Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John aka the four cardinal directions are made to represent the Age of Taurus aka over six thousand years ago. The writers used multiple astronomical charts. For instance, the death of Moses and Aaron, is used to describe the precession of the equinoxes from Taurus to Aries. Joshua who is also Jesus, crossed over into the Age of Aries aka over four thousand years ago. There is little coverage of the Age of Pisces. Most Catholic Priests id Jesus with at lest 2,000 B.C.E.

@@MindShift-Brandon quick question: have you heard of archbishop Jonathan Blake? if it's not too much trouble, what do you think of his approach to Christianity? thank youuu
22:44 "how many terrible things have happened to children because of this verse and verses like it" Imagine if the gospel authors had been aware of the power each of the sentences they wrote down would have on people, 2000 years downstream. The very words themselves, not the messiah figure they were describing - regardless of how much they believed in him.
On a different note, this hit me like a ton of bricks. That's exactly why I suffer. My family, especially my father has always put this invisible god before everything else, before me too. At least that's what I've always felt like, even as an indoctrinated child. The relationship I have with him is weird: I left the church some years ago but god and right wing politics is all he can talk about. I recently had a conversation with my two sisters (still in the cult) who were gaslighting me into the notion that our family is not as dysfunctional as I think because our parents did their best and provided for us and they did not understand why I was complaining. They're both mothers, and they kept telling me that one cannot understand certain things until one's a parent. Well, hate it to break it to them but children need more than just a roof over their heads and food on the table... emotional needs are a thing too. And honestly it's concerning they do not realize that and they are parents themselves. Just wanted to get it out of my system. But for sure that statement has hit me. @@andrewferg8737 Whether you're correct or not, is it not an exceedingly large problem that the book meant to save humanity is the very one so many people use to hurt and control others? They quote it word for word, just as you do, and follow its teachings. Who is to say which interpretation of the word of god is correct? The only tiebreaker is our innate sense of morality, which refuses those interpretations which feel wrong to us. And again, this innate sense supposedly from God conflicting with the direct word of God is yet another problem. Straight-up impossible, for a being who cannot do wrong and who cannot lie or make mistakes. So something in this cocktail of claims MUST be incorrect. Ponder that, as there is no other possibility. I also find the implication that Catholicism has never mistreated children to be incredibly offensive. Must be due to my God-given morality.
First of all, loved this analysis as always. Second, I have a potential video idea which I'd love to hear your thoughts on, Brandon: knowing the history of a negative cultural impact, if you could travel back in time and remove a few verses, which would you pick? I personally would choose 2 Timothy 3:16-17, as the "god-breathed scripture" concept has led to so much dogmatic literalism, but this could easily be a top 10 list haha
Listening to the add ins, structure, and expanded reach by the writer of Luke according to your analysis shows him to be a paid PR person hired to create an endearing, enticing myth including special (magical) attributes to secure the figurehead of a cult (Jesus) and expand the membership. Finally, as the cult grew, it needed structure or risk dissipating by spreading out into too many mini-myths and inconsistent ideologies. Yet another video worth watching several times. Thanks, Brandon.

I personally find the parable of the Prodigal Son problematic, although it does fit in with the general theme of the younger son supplanting the older son found in so many Bible stories. People look at this parable and say, oh, what a wonderful tale of forgiveness. And anyone who sympathizes with the older son, well, they just don't get it, you see. But let's take a closer look at this story. We all know how this story starts, so I won't go into all that. Instead, I want to focus on what happens and what doesn't happen when the younger kid comes home. All this time it seems Daddy has been looking down the road watching for him to return. When he does, he throws him a party to end all parties. Now, for the older son, who has been busy working while Daddy's watching for little brother to come home. The day little brother arrives, he's still working out in the fields. During all the preparations for this feast--killing and butchering the fatted calf, setting it to roast, hiring the musicians, and so forth--not one person from the household thinks about the older brother; not one messenger is sent to the field to say "Hey you might want to knock off work a bit early today, your brother's back and Dad's throwing a party." Let that sink in for a moment. They most certainly had time to do so! They did not. They CHOSE not to. If you don't see what is problematic about that, then maybe this sort of thing has never happened to you, or it has, and you are a much better person than I am, because I know exactly how it feels to be on the receiving end of being ignored and slighted by your supposed loved ones. It stinks. So of course the older brother is not going to be very happy when at last after a hard day's work he comes home and finds a party going on in full swing--a party he hasn't been told about, a party he hasn't been invited to. And as he says to Daddy, "all these years I slaved for you and you never once gave me a goat or a kid so I could have a feast with my friends, but he comes home after blowing all his money on BS and you kill the fatted calf"--he's got a right to be angry. Especially after his father says, "well, that's because you've been around here all the time and everything I have is yours, but"--and there is always a but--"don't you see, we have to rejoice, your brother was lost and now is found." "If everything I have is yours", then why do I have to remind you of the fact that you never gave me anything? This is a choice here. This is a pattern of behavior. To ignore one child--the "good" child--in favor of another--the "bad" child--is problematic. To put down the older son's legitimate grievance is problematic. To make him the villain of the story is problematic. It does not make for happy family relationships. It leads to estrangement. Yet this is a story that is held up over and over again as a model of forgiveness. Again, if you have never lived this dynamic, you probably won't understand where I am coming from. But if you have--then you know!
The Prodigal Son. He called upon his father, Dives, for his portion. Whether entitled to it, or not, the old gentleman bestowed it upon him. Immediately he retired into a foreign country (winter), where he “wasted his substance with riotous living” and with harlots. Having spent his all, a famine followed, and when nigh perishing with hunger, he bethought himself of his father, Old Dives, and put for home. The father seeing him returning, ran to meet him, embraced him, fell upon his neck and kissed him. Father, said the graceless scamp, I have sinned against, i.e., opposite, heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. Never mind, never mind, my son. Boys, bring the fatted calf (harvest, the Sun being in Taurus), kill it, let us eat, drink and be merry! For this my son was dead, and is alive again --was lost and is found. The elder brother found fault, and justly, too, for he had worked hard to get the fatted calf. But the old man, wheedled out of his wits, would have his own way. The prodigal must be luxuriously supported by his industrious brother, in riotous living and idleness. Thus summer supports winter. So, among men; -The industrious support the idle. Hence the latter would keep the former in ignorance.
I have often thought this myself, and agree fully, but would like to add. The story supposedly is an allegory in which the father represents god and the prodigal son represents a wayward sinner who repents. If god is all powerful and all knowing, he knows that the sinner will repent, so why should god be concerned at all? And if this is the case, what is the point of the parable? And, contrary to what the Bible says throughout, it is not logical that an all powerful and all knowing being can have emotions like the father in the parable has.
The way a story is told tells us a lot about the storyteller. I appreciate your gloss on this, because I'd never looked at this story in this way. What you say makes way more sense than the usual interpretation. Thank you. One of the things about the Abrahamic religions I get disturbed by, is the way things are so often dumbed down and the corners smoothed off, so things like nuance or different points of view don't need to be considered. And those are what give us the richness of insight.
Thank you for breaking down Luke, Brandon. When I first deconverted I came across a plain explanation of the parable of the talents not only as a warning to Christians but also a prediction of what would happen to the Jews who didn't accept him (basically the whole lot) upon his return: they are to be massacred! And if Jesus actually said this, then he must have understood that supreme executive power derived from a mandate from the Roman Senate, not from farcical aquatic ceremony!
Hello Brandon I just want to make this comment as a new member of your channel for the last couple of weeks at least since late March and I have to say I've been really impressed with your overall content to the point that I recommend you to other people who are in a similar boat that you were once were when you were in deconditioning do you even help me understand a little bit more surrounding the Bible and Christianity even though for most of my life I've never fully believed in really any major religion (mostly feeling them as clearly man-made / influenced)but I never call myself an atheist. I kind of just go with the flow especially when I was younger as I mainly grew up in a really semi-religious household.
I struggle because I do not believe in Jesus anymore but I'm terrified I'm wrong and leading my family astray. I can't help that it doesn't make sense to me anymore.
The fear is irrational. It's built into the cult of Christianity to keep people in the faith, despite the obvious absurdity of it. I woke up from my brainwashing, when I realized the ridiculousness of Exodus, and the complete lack of evidence it ever happened. Egypt lost nearly 2/3 of it's entire population (between Jewish people leaving, and the entire Egyptian army dying in the sea) and not one peep in Egyptian history? It wasn't fear I had to work through during my de-conversion, it was my anger at those who lied and misled me to believe such nonsense. Fundamentally, remind yourself that there is nothing you can possibly do in this finite life that would warrant an eternity of suffering. (We're talking FOREVER - the human mind can't even grasp the concept in its entirety) If the god they claim is fair and loving, such a thing would be impossible to reconcile.
This is a great channel to help you become better informed and more confident in your changed beliefs. Christianity isn't even consistent with itself, let alone history, science, or basic human decency and compassion. This religion is all about manipulation through fear.
AND that's what makes the whole idea of "believing" to be saved ludicrous. We don't have control over what we believe. We don't. Try to go outside and believe the sky is purple. Won't happen. You'll try but that's just you "trying" to believe or "wanting" to believe. Try to believe in Santa. Try to believe in anything that against all observable evidence. It's a struggle if not flat out impossible. It's unfortunate that some people on this planet are real deep thinkers while others just aren't. For God to say to one person, "hey you, shut off that brain I gave you" is just not fair. I wish he made me less logical if that's what he required. Anyway, I'm wishing you the best of the best and just know if you want to still believe in the Bible there's an idea there that your family was already called to do this or that so you're not in as much control as you think. That's if you want to still believe in it.
Great video! I can't wait to hear how you cover the birth narrative. It's the perfect example of using just a little bit of fact to try to support your story but also getting things wildly incorrect. The whole thing with Rome deposing Herod Archelaus and then bringing in Quirinius to over see and take a census for Rome (of only Judea not Galilee where Mary and Joseph are from) and how it makes no sense to have Joseph travel to Bethlehem, where he holds no property or anything, is just a fascinating pretzel of half truths and full on fabrications. I try to tell people about Luke's Birth narrative as often as possible to show the Bible is not inerrant and the gospels don't line up.
One of my favorite contradictions in the Synoptics is the Levi disciple calling story. Mark writes a disciple calling story and a dinner party pericope at his house. However, Mark fails to include Levi on the list of the Twelve. I think Mark made a mistake. Either James son of Alphaeus was the tax collector and Mark mistakenly called him Levi or Mark mistakenly listed James instead of Levi. It’s either or. It is fun to see how Matthew and Luke attempt to correct Mark’s error. Matthew simply eliminates Levi altogether and replaces him with Matthew. Luke, on the other hand, keeps the Levi disciple calling story, but eliminates Levi’s “ Son of Alphaeus” indentifier, but keeps it for James. To me Luke’s solution is more elegant and simple. It is a reminder that these gospel writers really had no idea who the disciples really were.

The Eastern Orthodox Church tradition is that Luke was close with Mary the mother of Jesus and that she told him the stories in the Gospel. Also that he was the first iconographer and he painted several icons of Mary with baby Jesus (Theotokos - Mother of God, God Bearer) This is what we were taught.
So basically, the four gospels are the Gospel according to that author giving us 4 different versions of Jesus. Glad to hear you say the "snarkey side of Jesus" because I was reading a passage (can't recall chapter or verse) when Nicodemus snuck away in the middle of the night to meet Jesus privately to talk to him because he had spiritual questions and wanted answers. Like any seeker of truth would, right? The way Jesus treated him was uncalled for IMHO. After reading that I was like, "Poor Nicodemus. He was seeking Truth from TRUTH Himself (supposedly) and not only did Jesus answer him with a vague WooHOO answer, he got reprimanded for questioning again when he didn't understand it." I shook my head. Jesus was such a d*ck to him. Did not show patience or understanding or even a willingness to teach. Really showed me just how the writer(s) of the book failed yet again. And it also cinches even more so that the God/Jesus Christianity is preaching is nothing like he is depicted in this "holy God-breathed" book reinforcing even more how much of this religion is based on utter lies and deception.
When I was 4 years old and heard about a talking snake I knew it was a scam and the Preachers were creepy. I used to listen to former Episcopalian Priest Alan Watts on the radio in the nineteen sixties. In won lecture he said that telling people not to think about sinful thoughts is like telling people not to think of a green elephant after midnight. In his lecture - Genuine.
what made the religion never stick with me was this idea that god had been on many adventures with his beloved chosen favourite people, the jews, for thousands of years... and then all of a sudden he turns around and becomes the god of Rome... now I'm looking into some hypothesis that jesus actually stands for 'son of Zeus'... the Roman empire basically wrote a kind of hybrid religion...
@@marcdc6809 I've read other comments elsewhere on TH-cam suggesting that Jesus was "Ye-Zeus", meaning "Yahweh-Zeus", given that Christianity was a result of syncretization of Judaism, Greek Mystery cults, the cult of Zeus/Jupiter and the Imperial Cult.

This is a good one to cover. Making an oath or swearing to god involved holding the phallus. Matthew 28:9....And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.
Ok I knew you had Tuesday Takedown, and Sunday services, but Thursdays too? I don't pay enough attention. No wonder I feel like you're constantly putting out videos.
Brandon... If of interest to you, could you do a video on the impact / influence of Paul on the various Gospels? Based upon the timeline, I'd think his input was ... unavoidable.
Paul mentions Luke in his letters and it's assumed that this is the author of the Gospels and of Acts (which I assume we'll get to) and while it may be early days, to get a true sense of Rome during this part of the writing of the Gospels I would recomend reading a book called The Flames of Rome. It is fascinating reading and forgetting the Christianity aspect, every person mentioned from Sabinus to Vespasian existed and if there is doubt, the author states so in the appendices, he even suggests who Theophilus might actually be, but as I said, he only states this in the appendices.
Great overview again. The contradictions in Luke do seem the strongest, the higjest contrast between love and vengeance. And in my opinion, Acts is Luke and Paul fanfic. It's just not as well done as Luke (despite having the Theophile opening), and straight copies Luke in a way that skilled writers don't often do. Luke condenses stuff from Matthew and Mark; it doesn't follow that style to self-plaguarize to have the apostles do the same miracles and make the same arguments as in the gospels. That's the definition of a "hack" writer, IMO. I know that's very subjective, but just remember not to assume the traditional shared authorship idea is correct. Also there's the famous lapse into first person plural during the shipwreck, another amateurish blunder Luke never makes.
I've found that the author of Luke had an ear cut off with a sword, and he had it stitched back on....he considered himself a doctor, lol. Thus he penned the words "physician heal thyself"...
The words sword and cross, in biblespeak, is the phallus. Peter gets the spring equinox and Andrew gets the autumn equinox. Peter gets the sign of the wooly sheep (Aries) and Andrew get the Eagle (Scorpio). Take a look at Leonardo's Last supper and see if you can find Peter. He is to the far right of Jesus (the sun). The girlish character to the immediate right, of the sun, is the virgin (Virgo). Think not that I have brought peace (vagina), but the sword (phallus). Jesus comes out of winter, wearing the golden girdle of Venus around his paps. The Jesus character is male during winter and female during summer. He is identical to Isaiah (the savior sun) who is also male during the winter and female during the summer. See Isaiah 47.3.
I said this on the Matthew video concerning Jesus' genealogy and I'll say it here: Without saying Jesus' name, God disqualified Jesus from inheriting and ruling from the throne of David in Jeremiah 36:30 when he said that no descendant of Jehoiakim may inherit and rule from the throne of David. Depending on which passage you read, Jeconiah is the son or grandson of Jehoiakim, making Jesus a descendant of Jehoiakim because Jesus is a descendant of Jeconiah. Maybe this is why Paul said to pay no mind to genealogies because it would make people see that he's just lying about the glorification of this man that he never even met.
On a TH-cam channel called Ward Radio there is a discussion on how the Deuteronomist removed the symbols of Jesus Christ from the temple and the Old Testament. Remember Malachi accused the Jews of worshipping the daughter of a strange god, they were in apostasy when Jesus came. Margaret Barker says there was one sect of Jews who held onto the older tradition of worshipping El Elyon and Jehovah as his son. Nathaniel said, thou art the Son of El, thou are the King of Israel meaning Jehovah. That's why this small group accepts Jesus as the Messiah but still seem somewhat confused about his mission. The Jews also removed the knowledge of a second Messiah. There was supposed to be Messiah Ben David and then another Messiah Ben Joseph, very interesting, look it up.
King Solomon the annual SUN is still very much alive.

@@harveywabbit9541 There is a struggle between those who look at the writings of the past through the eyes of religious or spiritual concepts and those who are secularists. Each has an agenda and will spin spin spin. I found an article at Gnostics Warrior by Moe called Sol-om-on. He quotes Manly P. Hall from a book called, The Secret Teachings of all Ages. " The name Solomon he states, symbolizes light, glory, and truth collectively and respectively. It signifies its invisible but all-powerful, spiritual and intellectual effulgency.” I had to look up the word effulgency, it means; "the quality of being bright and sending out rays of light." Yes the name Solomon is pretty spectacular but that doesn't mean anyone worshiped the Bible Solomon as a god. The word light symbolizes truth and knowledge. David who gave Solomon his name wrote; "O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles."Ps 43 And then Solomon builds the temple.
Wow how did I never see the contradiction between the ascension narrative of Luke and Acts? Reading it just now what's crazy to me is that it seems like in Luke the ascension takes place at night . Those two dudes on the road to Emmaus said to Jesus: "but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent". And then after they broke bread they walked back to Jerusalem which was 7 miles , talk to the 11, Jesus appears, eats a meal with them and says some stuff and then they walk towards Bethany. The conclusion I get is that it must've been nighttime by then. it's just so strange because in my mind I always pictured Jesus ascending in the daytime at like noon and not at night time. It kind of changes the tone of the Ascension because God supposed to be a god of light. I wonder if there are some influences from mystery cults in this description?
There is no contradiction. The ascension in Luke is preceded by the 40 days that Jesus showed himself alive to his apostles by many infallible proofs (Acts 1:3). The day of his resurrection is highlighted in Luke 24. There is a gap of time between that day as detailed in Luke and his ascension 40 days later, recorded in both Luke 24:50-51 and Acts 1:9.
@@sdlorah6450 I don’t care what tradition or Acts 1 says, I look at every book on its own and the clear meaning of the narrative. Rereading Luke 24 again the sequence of events looks pretty clear to me. - The women went in the morning to prepare the body and saw the angels telling them he is not here, he is risen. - They tell the disciples, of which it says “but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them.” - All except Peter who goes to tomb and comes away marveling. - The very next verse says: “that very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem” - They meet Jesus whose identity is hidden from them who starts asking them about what they are talking about, and one of the two named Cleopas says “Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning”. That means it’s basically the same day the resurrection happened. - After Jesus talks to them about the scriptures and what the Christ must suffer it says “So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” - They break bread and Jesus opens up the scripture and their eyes before disappearing in front of them. - “And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem” which was a journey of 7 miles. At this point it must be dark already since they had just said it is toward even and the day is far spent. - When they get back to Jerusalem (maybe they ran 7 miles in an hour) they tell everything to the disciples and Jesus appears to them and he eats some fish. - Jesus tells them “I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you ware clothed with power from on high.” - And then the book ends with “And he led them out as far as Bethany (two miles from Jerusalem), and lifting up his hands he blessed them. 51 While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple blessing God.” Where in this narrative is there space for 40 days before the ascension, let alone 2 days? It was already dark by the time the two disciples got back. Then Jesus appears, eats something and tells them to wait until they are clothed with power. And then they go out and he is lifted up. At best this sounds like it could have taken place on the very next day early in the morning, but given that they didn’t have electricity, “the day is far gone” sounds like 7pm. How long did it take for them to walk or run back to Jerusalem, have the powwow with Jesus, and then walk to Bethany for the ascension? Assuming they were all fit, not that long which means the way I read it, it could have been in the middle of the night. Which is a nice parallel to the events in the Garden of Gesthemane. As for Acts 1, I honestly think that some over zealous scribe could have inserted it to harmonize it with other gospels, just like the earliest versions of Mark don’t have Jesus appearing at all or a great commission. All in all though, since I don’t believe any of it, it doesn’t really matter that much to me, but it’s further proof of the humanity of these books, though they are great works of literature in my view.
@@hypergraphic Post-resurrection but pre-ascension appearances of Jesus Christ are recorded in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. His appearing to over 500 witnesses at once is referenced in 1 Corinthians 15:6, yet the details of this appearance are not recorded in the gospels. Considering all of these, it is plain that Jesus did not ascend immediately after his appearing in Luke 24. One must ignore other scriptures in addition to the Acts reference to insist on this reading, that there was no gap of time in Luke 24 prior to his ascension recorded at the end of that chapter.
Now after looking at these gospels objecitvely, I can see why no Christians ever quote verses from Mark and Mattew. Only the ones with the agenda to promote love and inclusion found in Luke and John after people decided to make the jewish cult leader sound more palatable to the gentiles in order to spread their religion. Thanks for these videos!
Its a false analogy. If two historians both write about George Washington, lets day one is British and one is a fellow early American, both would presumably have bias, but having both sides versus just the one side would ideally give us a closer approximation of truth. Also not all bias is the same. A christian writing a gospel is much more biased than a fairly objective foreign er who happens to enjoy writing histories.
@MindShift-Brandon Again, why were we playing the bias game? How about we get a neutral party to write about George Washington like, Let's say, A chinese author. Why would you want to hear either side of a biased account?
Most people use "one take and one left" as a view of the "rapture" (don't get left behind) But it seems to me that the ones left behind are the "saved". In Matthew it's compared to the time of Noah (which the saved ones weren't taken the ones away) and in Luke when asked where the ones taken were taken Jesus replies, "Where the corpse is, there the eagles will gather." Sounds like the ones taken weren't the ones saved.

As you berate the scripture like Brandon does.. shame on you. A failed attempt of someone teaching from the Bible his pretentious
born again Christian Bible upbringing. But many mock Christianity today and I guess things don’t really change but ONE day everything will be renewed and all will see thy God and it will suddenly occur, believe it .. or not.

Very interesting

Never thought about the idea that the author of Luke was paid to write it. Glad the scribe got paid, but I wonder who's paying.
I didn't even realize how different the nativity stories were in the gospels
Pretty wild!

I think it was you who hosted Joshua Bowen and recommended his book "The Atheist Handbook to the Old Testament". I got both part I and II, listening to Part I now (audiobook) and I love it. Thanks so much!
Joshua Bowen is really good!
Thanks for your efforts to explain the book of Luke. Another book Christians can pick and chose from to support whatever their beliefs are.
The two thieves are Aaron and Moses.
I always loved the Good Thief story. I am so sad that it was just another con.
That census problem is why i find the gospel accounts unreliable. The census did NOT happen. Great video brandon.
Good stuff. I know you hear this a lot but when I left Christianity, you were a great help and source of validation.
so very glad to hear it!
Your perspectives continue to enhance my thinking & processing of the bigger pictures within & across these books in context. Thanks so much!
Thank you!
Woah, what? There's only one ascension narrative among the four gospels? That's so weird 😮 never knew.
Love your stuff! And these Secular Bible Studies!!
Do you think you'll go through some of the Apocrypha, particularly Gospel of Thomas and compare them to these canon gospels? I think it would be interesting to note what the Church didn't want Jesus to be associated with.
Thanks!! :)
I will indeed and thank you!

The English translators falsely changed Bara which is divide, to separate, to cut apart, to renew.....to "create."

22:44 "how many terrible things have happened to children because of this verse and verses like it"
Imagine if the gospel authors had been aware of the power each of the sentences they wrote down would have on people, 2000 years downstream. The very words themselves, not the messiah figure they were describing - regardless of how much they believed in him.
that is wild to think about!

So glad to help. Thanks, Maggie!
"Why make us if you don't want us to be us" - spot on as usual. God did a bad job and blames us for it.
But if you have--then you know!
agreed, it deserves its own video!
@@MindShift-Brandon I'd love to see that video.
The best video yet! Thanks for your work revealing the truth about the Bible and Jesus.
I'm looking forward to John. I loved that book as a Christian of course! It's an important one.
Good Afternoon. Nice video.
THanks!
Good stuff
Thanks
Hello Brandon I just want to make this comment as a new member of your channel for the last couple of weeks at least since late March and I have to say I've been really impressed with your overall content to the point that I recommend you to other people who are in a similar boat that you were once were when you were in deconditioning do you even help me understand a little bit more surrounding the Bible and Christianity even though for most of my life I've never fully believed in really any major religion (mostly feeling them as clearly man-made / influenced)but I never call myself an atheist. I kind of just go with the flow especially when I was younger as I mainly grew up in a really semi-religious household.
Appreciate that so very much!
That's thousands of years of well honed manipulation at work there. Those hooks get in deep and it takes time to remove them.
This is a great channel to help you become better informed and more confident in your changed beliefs. Christianity isn't even consistent with itself, let alone history, science, or basic human decency and compassion. This religion is all about manipulation through fear.
Man i feel ya! It gets easier the more you learn and see it from a distance
Thanks for the great content.
Thanks man!

Luke and Acts are going to be interesting to compare and constrast!
Love SBS. Great episode bro. As always
Thank you much!
Yes indeed. A major issue

It was Jupiter who impregnated the mother of Jesus. That's why Jesus became a Priest of Melchizedek. Melchizedek = King Jupiter.

There is an enormous amount of astrology in the book of Acts.
I said this on the Matthew video concerning Jesus' genealogy and I'll say it here:
Without saying Jesus' name, God disqualified Jesus from inheriting and ruling from the throne of David in Jeremiah 36:30 when he said that no descendant of Jehoiakim may inherit and rule from the throne of David.
I always found it strange that we never knew Jesus' and Mary's real names, along with many others.

There is a struggle between those who look at the writings of the past through the eyes of religious or spiritual concepts and those who are secularists.
It signifies its invisible but all-powerful, spiritual and intellectual effulgency.”
I had to look up the word effulgency, it means;
"the quality of being bright and sending out rays of light."
Yes the name Solomon is pretty spectacular but that doesn't mean anyone worshiped the Bible Solomon as a god.
The word light symbolizes truth and knowledge. David who gave Solomon his name wrote; "O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles."Ps 43
And then Solomon builds the temple.

Nighttime Jesus sounds like a ghost.
- They tell the disciples, of which it says “but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them.”
- All except Peter who goes to tomb and comes away marveling.
- The very next verse says: “that very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem”
- They meet Jesus whose identity is hidden from them who starts asking them about what they are talking about, and one of the two named Cleopas says “Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning”. That means it’s basically the same day the resurrection happened.
- After Jesus talks to them about the scriptures and what the Christ must suffer it says “So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.”
- They break bread and Jesus opens up the scripture and their eyes before disappearing in front of them.
But stay in the city until you ware clothed with power from on high.”
- And then the book ends with “And he led them out as far as Bethany (two miles from Jerusalem), and lifting up his hands he blessed them. 51 While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple blessing God.”
Where in this narrative is there space for 40 days before the ascension, let alone 2 days?
@@Badficwriter That's certainly what the disciples though before he ate some fish.
One must ignore other scriptures in addition to the Acts reference to insist on this reading, that there was no gap of time in Luke 24 prior to his ascension recorded at the end of that chapter.

yes it would. Everything is biased for sure, but equal representation helps cut some of this down.
@MindShift-Brandon How; how would more bias cut bias down? Does more violence cut violence?
Its a false analogy. If two historians both write about George Washington, lets day one is British and one is a fellow early American, both would presumably have bias, but having both sides versus just the one side would ideally give us a closer approximation of truth. Also not all bias is the same. A christian writing a gospel is much more biased than a fairly objective foreign er who happens to enjoy writing histories.

Most people use "one take and one left" as a view of the "rapture" (don't get left behind) But it seems to me that the ones left behind are the "saved". In Matthew it's compared to the time of Noah (which the saved ones weren't taken the ones away) and in Luke when asked where the ones taken were taken Jesus replies, "Where the corpse is, there the eagles will gather."
