  • Food law and policy is one of the fastest growing areas of law, and Harvard Law School is at the forefront of this exciting field. From obesity to food waste to GMO labeling to agricultural subsidies, this field of law affects not only issues of everyday life but also some of the biggest social issues facing our nation and the globe. During a bicentennial summit session titled “Why Food Law? Serving Justice, Sustainability, and Health,” hosted by Harvard Law School Assistant Clinical Professor Emily Broad Leib ‘08, director of the Harvard Law School Food Law and Policy Clinic, moderated a discussion with Ona Balkus ‘13, legislative counsel for the District of Columbia council; Peter Barton Hutt ‘59, senior partner Covington & Burling; Smita Narula ‘97, fellow of Hunter College’s Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute; Attorney Nathan Rosenberg ‘12; and Tama Matsuoka Wong ‘83, author and wild-food purveyor, discussed what this field entails and how it is developing among U.S. law schools.
