I am a kindergarten teacher in a traditional public school. This talk caught my eye because my granddaughter has flourished in a Waldorf school, but her reading development has not followed the same path as the one my students take. I was wonderful to finally understand the pedagogy behind literacy instruction in Waldorf schools. I have a lot to think about. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and practice.
I almost didn't watch this because a whole hour of my time is quite an investment for this mom of 5. However, the information is so valuable and you are so well-spoken with such a calm tone, I could watch this all day.
Bravo!! Waldorf's great literature employs sophisticated vocabulary. For all ages, after learning those whole-word articulations, explicit sound-spellings at the "writing" stage will prove most empowering.
This is an amazing lecture that really shows the power of Waldorf Schooling. I'll be using this as a resource for a Masters paper. This video is excellent! I saw this a few years ago and came across it again now. I can't believe it doesn't have more views. Will definitely share for the sake of children
This was beyond incredible. Thank you for sharing your gift and spreading awareness so we can do better as educators. You’ve lit my soul on fire in the best way 🙏🏼
I am writing a book in Urdu language about the pedagogy of literacy in Waldorf school system (grade 1), and your lecture caught my attention and i need a reference of your lecture in my book, hope you would like to give me your consent about it. i would appreciate that and i am looking forward to have more lecture like this. Kind regards Farah Naeem
I wish I had an early education like this when I was a child. But What I can do is, one day, when I become a parent, I will get an admission in a Waldorf School for my children. By the way kudos to the lecturer, she is really incredible.
If we compare this to 1700 education to Waldorf, there is no comparison bc children in these times wrote in cursive and knew scripture by heart because their parents would read to their children to teach Biblical doctrine. These children knew how to read and were in school for shorter amount of time and if they did this type of learning style then I believe our country would of have not been as strong as it is as today. Love the colors and love the soft approach but the slow approach may not be good for all kids.
Agreed. I teach in a public school, and many of the steiner kids that move to our school are very behind on literally skills. In high school. I think some kids fit the steiner approach, certainly not all.
A lot of this stuff sounds great, especially about letting the new generations create their own mould through their expression and behaviour, rather than forcing them into our pre-existing one. But why hasn’t it been rescued from the connection with an eccentric Austrian occultist that had twice as many confused, hysterical and absurd insights, as he did genius ones? Why not cannibalise and extract the good, then build on that and update it with new findings. I’m sure this is basically what happens in Steiner schools, but why still have his name attached? We all know some teachers are gonna get a bit Scientology about all this stuff, and become unable to separate the rational insights from the racist and deranged ramblings regarding spirits, past lives and how the melanin levels in your skin betray your moral fortitude. Many white teachers will feel like they have been all the shades and have finally arrived at some higher level of karmic energy or whatever, it’s impossible to avoid when you claim this guy to be a genius about so much, “oh, but yeah, he’s wrong about all this?” This isn’t how the human brain works for many people. It’s like Islam, it’s hard to accept only parts of Koran, if some of it is flawed, than that could compromise integrity of the entire ideology.

Daryl, What did you end up concluding? Did you implement any aspect of the Waldorf way in your teachings? Thank you.
