  • Hey everyone! Here's my 2023 Halloween Village Display - Witches in the Wood!
    It's a small display but given all the craziness of this year, I'm really happy with it!
    I'm using various Lemax Spooky Town and Department 56 Halloween pieces such as Lemax Spooky Town Witch's Cottage, Lemax Spooky Town Wicked Garden Coven, Department 56 Castle Blackstone, Department 56 Spooky Wrought Iron Gate, Department 56 Twinkle Brite Trees and many more!
    The background a Village Scene Setters Foggy Graveyard.
    The tree tutorial can be found here - • Trees 101 Part 1
    Thanks for watching,
    - Doug

    I love using the insulation foam as a base. (I stopped using my steak knives to cut it when my son introduced me to the hot foam cutter) We don't have many supplies here. No Michaels, just Walmart with a very small craft department. I usually wind up searching for small branch ends that I can dry and paint to use as trees. I mix Creepy Hallow with Lemax. I've been at this for about 50 years. What a gift it was when my Granddaughter introduced me to TH-cam and I discovered all these wonderful artistic people! Thank you for helping to make my holidays so much brighter by showing me how to take things to the next level! Love watching your videos!

    Love the way this looks and amazing lighting. I definitely prefer smaller villages where you can focus much better on a scene

    Hi Doug! Love love love the lights! It’s always fun to put it up, but I do not like all the work it takes to tuck it all back away. So we’re just putting up our temple of terror this year lol!

      The teardown process is something that most of us dread so I understand that! I've not set things up before due to dread of teardown!

    Oh, the heat was intolerable this year. I can relate to not being able to do much decorating and for similar reasons. One year ago I moved my family from Seattle, WA, to SW Missouri and our new home was quite a wreck. It came with a large garage, and I had hoped to get it cleaned out so I could set up a model train table with a Halloween theme(using quite a few Lemax houses and such), but it was really hot muggy all summer and still quite unpleasant through most of October. Plus, whenever it was bearable enough to open my garage doors, mosquitoes and wasps would invade my space, defeating my efforts. I did get some of it together but not enough to enjoy on Halloween. Really disappointing! Hoping next year will be better.

      It sounds like similar experiences! it was so damn hot this year past year, combined with all the moving, that the vibes just weren't there for Halloween. I'm happy I wound up with my small display and I'm viewing it as I kind of got started early for next year, as I plan to customize this base more and re-use in a different display!

    Love your display! I had never heard of Lemax Spooky Town until 3 weeks ago. Since then, I have spent sooo much on this new hobby that I might need counseling 😂. Also, I really appreciate your videos, as they have give us valuable info and pointers! Thanks so much!

      It’s been brutal with the heat to the point that when I’ve had free time, I’ve not had ANY Halloween vibes. I had to force myself to finish this by October 1st. Now that it’s done and the temps have cooled off, I’m very happy to be able to enjoy the village!

      @SpookyVillages The heat definitely takes away the fall mood, but like i said it cooled down, currently 45 at 9pm. I put out skeletons tonight while my wife made cinnamon rolls and tomorrow its Chili :^) Have a great weekend.

    Great village display! I know what you mean by getting busy but at least you got something up. The long hot summer has made it harder to get into a Halloween mood. I can’t wait to see what you come up with for a pumpkin patch backdrop.

    Really nice display, Doug, given your constraints. When you showed all the Woodland Scenics items it made you look like a model railroader. Then when you mentioned auto and armor dioramas, I thought of course you'd have some.

    • @SpookyVillages
      @SpookyVillages  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you! Yes, one of my biggest hobbies is building and racing radio control vehicles and many are very realistic in how they look and operate. I’ve also built a number of static models over the years and lately have gotten really into it! I’m excited to go whole hog into terrain building over the next year!

    • @CassidysWorkshop
      @CassidysWorkshop 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I know the appeal. After building a model railroad, I've been building scale structures and dioramas for myself and others. Just like Halloween displays, something about creating life in miniature is fascinating. Someday you should give an overview of all your hobbies so we see the whole Doug; candles, cars, creepy displays, and all. LOL

    Cool display, noticed your voice sounds different on this one. Is it because of the position of the microphone? Great to see how you used your backdrop.

    I have a question for the guy doing the video. I saw a presentation on Helga’s Hats. I got one that is broken, the blue light that is in the scene in the hat cutout is loose, and the hat has separated from the 1st floor. The little blue light that shines down from the ceiling is Ok. Does the other blue light come up from the little hole in the floor and attach behind the buckle? Or where is it glued on? I need to attach that before I can glue the hat part to the 1st floor part. I don’t know who else to ask. Thanks so much for your great videos! You are an inspiration to many!

      @SpookyVillages  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey thank you! Unfortunately I don't have an answer on Helga's Hats as I sold mine awhile back. I would recommend joining one of the many Department 56 facebook groups as someone with the piece will surely help you out!

    Hi, Doug.
    May I ask you a question?
    What's the grass color for bottom base? Is it burnt grass from Woodland Scenics?
    Thank you!

    • @SpookyVillages
      @SpookyVillages  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The bottom base I used several Lemax grass sheets and cut them to fit! I used a foam glue to glue them on, and used a light amount of glue at that so they wouldn't show through.

      @@SpookyVillages Oh, I didn't know such a sheet in LEMAX. Thanks to you, it helped me a lot. Have a nice day!

    Hey Doug, you said in 2021 the spookiest village contest was going to be an annual thing… are you still doing it?

    • @SpookyVillages
      @SpookyVillages  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I was hoping to make it an annual thing, but the logistics around it wound up being a bit more complicated than I initially thought. I also don't really like how it's a competitive thing regarding something that's usually not competitive. For those reasons, I probably won't be doing it again. I may change my mind at some point though!

    Hello, my name is Claire and i have a health relationship with anything spooky.
    My house is full if Jack Skellington item but over the past year i have found lemax spooky collection. I always wished someone would make the Christmas village thats in the range at Christmas, low and behold it did exist and i been missing out.
    So could someone Please tell me where i can get the form base from thats in this video.
    I have tried online but when i ask if its the dense carving type everyone says no. I have a small area so need to have layers with a carved out rock type edging.
    I have seen online how to do it and have even bought a hot knife, but the platform / base i cant find in the UK. I really wish we had a home depot over here.
    Thank you in advance for any help.
