I love how Luffy, Usopp and Chopper almost have their own little friend group. Those three are always goofing off together, and it’s adorable.

Nami and Usopp is one of my favourites, I just love the sort of brother and sister dynamic they have. They're one of the dynamics I can most imagine seeing in an actual family, even if they have distinctively different personalities their always on the same brainwave.

I super agree with this. I always thought that whether they were in different industries, careers or lifetimes. They would always hit it off either as amazing best friends or siblings. I would even add business partners. They're a great example of a friendship where they just stay as that to the point where most Fans don't even ship them romantically. That's how you know they have a great platonic relationship. Just done right.

I will forever be disappointed that Luffy and Brook didn't have a conversation about Ace's death and how to handle loss and grief. I love how Jinbe helped Luffy, but I still feel like it would have been amazing if Brook, who is so closely connected to the concept of finding joy and not giving up after suffering a tragedy like that, had been able to guide Luffy through it.
Honestly, It should've been Rayleigh. He was his mentor and was in a similar situation when Roger died. I'm not mad It was Jimbe, I just really wanted it to be Rayleigh.
Brooks backstory is my favorite and most heartbreaking to me.

Robin and Zoro's dynamic I think is summed up during Punk Hazard when thinking about crossing the lake. Robin has already decided she's on board with Luffy's stupid plan without saying anything and Zoro has already resigned himself to having to carry it out without saying anything. They just kinda agree with each other for the wrong reasons.
That part in Wano alone makes Robin and Sanji an easy S-tier for me

Honestly hard disagree on Robin and Brook. They had a FANTASTIC dynamic during the raid, to the point where Brook fully trusts her to take on Black Maria while he deals with the fodder (something Robin herself already appreciated with Sanji asking for her help.)
Plus they both know what its like to be alone, have great stealth/espionage skills, and a similar morbid sense of humor. I still believe in Frobin sumpremacy but honestly all the actually responsible adult strawhats mesh well together
They had a good dynamic in a filler episode that took place right after Thriller Bark.
In it, Brook has to deal with the insecurity of being less valued or unwanted by being cursed/a new member which Robin relates to.

I think it's overlooked because most of his dynamics with the guys weren't usually for comedic purposes (except zoro) but he looks out for the crew a lot, especially he has several genuine interactions with the romance dawn squad
Sanji/Usopp have some really funny Skypiea moments together when they’re boarding the Deathpia. Usopp also lowkey insults Sanji a lot and it’s funny every time it happens. I’d move it to low A/high B tier

C is criminal 😭 I feel like Sanji is actually pretty protective over Usopp, he defends him after the Usopp/Luffy fight too. My headcanon is that he empathises with him feeling weak because of the relationship with his brothers. Nami/Sanji/Ussop is my fav trio on Skypeia too, they keep saving each other.

Yeah, Sanji is one of the few characters that understand Ussop. Unlike Luffy and Zoro he isn’t completely insane and tries to fight anything that moves. He can relate to the feeling of being weak, and scared yet he also understands the need of standing on your principles and being brave and strong man. He is kinda what Zoro is to Chopper to a lesser degree. It’s an A tier in my opinion.

Usopp and Sanji is an S highkey. Remember how they worked together in Skypiea to save Nami and Sanji kicked away Usopp from Enels attack or Sanji getting Usopps googles back in Alabasta and how Sanji kicked Franky on the Sea train for beating usopps ass. Or how Sanji played along during Robins rescue mission with the Sniper King bit. Sanji also kicked Luffy square in the face for kicking Usopp out the crew and stopped Chopper from giving Usopp treatment cus it would’ve hurt his pride and much more.
Sanji is the only one that really gets Usopp and his insecurities cus he himself is insecure and self loathing deep inside aswell.
I think it was MelonTee's video on Sanji that went into this, but the fact that Sanji was the last of the East Blue SHs makes him respect the 4 that came before him in a very unique way. It's interesting because outside of Nami (who he has different dynamic with for obvious reasons...), he reacts to the 3 guys in very similar ways, albeit for different reasons, of sort of having that "younger brother angst" where you KNOW he has a ton of respect for them, but on the surface he often berates them. Luffy and Usopp normally for their childish antics (or Luffy being an idiot/Usopp being a coward), and Zoro for their entire rivalry that they have. But you KNOW he looks up to them. With Luffy there's always gonna be way more of a clear written dynamic, and with Zoro he just has a lot of very obvious moments in general, but Usopp ends up sort of being the odd man out of this equation, since they don't have a ton of obvious interactions. But when Sanji actually wants to motivate Usopp (like in Enies Lobby), it becomes super clear how much he respects him, even if MOST of the screentime they have is Usopp being the butt of a joke and Sanji being one of the straight men to his antics.
I thought of all those examples too, they had so many great moments! I also think a lot about when the crew was being attacked by Kizaru on Saboady, Sanji went after Ussop's group to protect them, and didn't properly freak out and recklessly charge at Kuma until he made Ussop disappear. I think he sees himself as his protector.
This is one of the best conversations I've ever seen on here. Such well thought out examples and well written interpretations. I wish I had something to add myself but I at least wanted to say that you're all awesome.
Yeah, it's a great relationship, but it's one of the more low-key ones.
Not everything can be an S-tier, it just ruins the value of what really is S tier

The best part about the Straw-Hat crew is that no matter which crewmates happen to end up alone together they all have synergy and bounce off each other so well.
Sanji/Usopp is really underrated. There was that time in Alabasta when Sanji got Usopps goggles back from Mr 2. They have a lot of fun moments in Jaya/Skypeia. Also, with the added context of Sanji’s backstory, I think Sanji could relate to Usopp a lot when he felt worthless in W7. Sanji even went as far as to kick Luffy when he was about to tell Usopp to leave the crew. And ofc the whole speech Sanji had at Enies Lobby (probably also drawing from personal experience). So pre-ts their dynamic was great. I can’t think of as many moments post-ts, but I’d at least put them A.
I can't wait for Lufffy and Usopp to finally get to Elbaf that arc is going to be big for both of them.

Great list, but I feel like there's a lot you're missing from Jinbei, he's got some if you're looking for it. His main gag is kinda just being super oblivious to straw hat shenanigans as well as being a polite old man. Him letting Zorro find Luffy at the start of the Onigashima raid and not knowing that he will get lost cracks me up forever. Still though entertaining list looking forward to more!
You forgot how Jimbei kept stealing Sanji’s thunder in Wano. Jimbei joins to help guide Luffy to the roof and Sanji gets all mad, and Jimbei’s just like “oh, my bad.”
Sanji is Usopp’s biggest supporter next to Luffy. Did you see how excited he got when Usopp showed up to save Robin in Enies Lobby? That was adorable.

Something I really like about Luffy and Nami is that there’s a balance in their authority over each other. Luffy often acts childish and Nami puts him in line a lot so it feels like she’s got the power over him. But at the end of the day Luffy IS the captain and the most powerful straw hat and Nami def relies on and respects and trusts in that. And likewise Luffy highly values Nami for her decision making and input. She probably has the 3rd most authority on the crew after Zoro, but Zoro rarely makes decisions for the crew. So that balance between Luffy and Nami is one I’ve always liked.
Luffy Nami and Zoro are like the three branches of government for the crew.
Luffy is the captain and thus calls all the shots and provides vision
Nami would be like a taskmaster who organizes the crew to actually get things done.
Zoro is the enforcer who keeps everyone in line.
I'm glad you acknowledge how amazing Nami and Usopp and Franky and Robin are. Nami and Usopp come across as ride or die (except they'd run away instead of die) platonic best friends and Frobin is my OTP One Piece ship because together they can build a ship.

Frobin is great but man everyone always sleeps on brook he is one of my favorite strawhats of all time as he is always there to support any straw hat and sacrifice his own ambitions if it could help out any other member of the crew. The man could have probably met Laboon if he just abandoned the straw hats during the time skip but he remained loyal to crews dreams.

I think Sanji and Usopp is underrated, it's kinda a fusion of the relationship usopp has with Zoro and Nami.
Sanji still has that older brother/more capable fighter dynamic whilst also being one of the more logical, rational, and generally competent strawhats (when women arent involved).
I love when Sanji pretends like he's not going to save Usopp because he's not a woman and yet still helps him every time. It's especially hilarious because usually Usopp is the one being nonsensical when they're alone so it's a great reversal. The Enies Lobby moment when Sanji tell Usopp to do what he can't is one of the best in the series for sure!

You don’t see the vision with Robin and Zoro. He did not trust her whatsoever, and she didn’t fully trust the crew when she joined. But Zoro’s mind changed completely once Robin sacrificed herself for everyone else. We know Zoro can’t stand someone getting hurt in his no stead, and Robin couldn’t imagine anyone protecting her ever again. While they don’t talk much, I can’t help but notice how similarly dedicated they are to their talents and how hilarious that these two people are even on the same crew to begin with.

Another part of the Ussop+Luffy dynamic I like is that Luffy at times mimics Ussop's behaviour when they're vibing together.
I'd put Luffy and Sanji in S tier too, both can be goofy Sanji can be the more level headed one.
They literally have no chemistry other than Luffy telling Sanji to feed him and Sanji being an ass to him.

I think I never really realized how moldable Brook is until you mentioned it. Hes like the ultimate supporting character who enhances any crewmates bit. Hes mature and chill with Robin, badass with Franky, a scaredy goof with Nami and Usopp and I imagine on his unc shit with Jinbei.

i think you're sleeping on usopp and sanji's dynamic a little bit. the whole "everyone has things they can and cannot do" was just peak, especially in the context of whole cake--sanji wasn't just saying that, he GETS usopp. also sanji as usopp's exasperated, cool older brother is top tier comedy to me considering how over the top he can be otherwise lmao. usopp's dynamic w each member of the monster trio is just hilarious in general, but i think it's so fucking funny how he and sanji (arguably the sanest of the trio) are either on the exact same wavelength or trade off being the common sense depending on the situation. easily A tier.

Every time people speculate about new strawhats joining, I think about how rarely we get to see some strawhats interact.
Water 7 is hands down my favorite arc because there are so many moments that we see the Strawhats’ dynamics. Nami and Usopp when Nami held Usopp after he got his ass beat, Luffy and Usopp and their entire argument, Luffy and Zoro “don’t waver” quote, Sanji and Luffy with Sanji kicking Luffy to keep him in check, Franky and Usopp with Franky letting him down easy with the Going Merry, Robin and Sanji with Robin telling Sanji her last goodbyes, hell even Chopper telling Sanji to let go so he can treat Usopp after he got beat by Luffy. I could go on and on.
Luffy not having a single dynamic below A makes so much sense since hes the one that brought the crew together

Usopp got a goated relationship with just everyone. I love how on Enies Lobby, its obvious nami luffy and chopper miss him and wsnt him back outright, but while Sanji and Zoro play it cool and dont outright say it or show sadness, and even though zoro said he's have to apologize to be accepted back, you can tell theyre p r a y i n g he comes back to his senses. They know they have to stick to their personal code and not waver, but they still want him back in. Usopp is my fav man

Straw hats interactions are my fanservice, love it so much
I definitely think Zoro & Usopp (my top 2 favorite characters) are the most underrated duo that doesn’t get talked about enough and needs more attention. Zoro himself was the one who told Usopp to get on the ship as they were leaving Syrup Village and that’s saying something. I believe Zoro sees that Usopp truly isn’t a coward deep down and that Usopp really does have a lot to offer to the crew in his own unique ways. I find that really wholesome.
My absolute favourite is Luffy and Zoro, the best of friends who get into crazy shenanigans together and would make the greatest sacrifices for eachother.
From scenes like their combined attack on the train, the shared rage about the spilled oshiruko, Zoro's "nothing happened" sacrifice, and the way Luffy glomped Zoro's face when reunited in Wano, in the same way he glomped Sabo at Dressrosa, all really show just how amazing they are as friends.
Second would be Zoro and Chopper, Zoro as the older, stronger brother, and Chopper as the younger, smarter one. They are so sweet yet awesome together, Zoro always being there for hus little bro, yet having much confidence in him too ^^
And a very close third, Robin and Chopper, their motherly figure & kid dynamic is just as sweet as Choppy with Zoro, but it's evident he looks up to Robin more :3
Glad to see Sanji/Usopp being defended in the comments, honestly I'd put them in A or S too. To me, out of the East Blue five, if Luffy, Zoro and Nami are siblings, then Sanji and Usopp are brothers. Sanji is always pretty protective of Usopp when you pay attention, and they're both a bit more rational than Zoro and Luffy. Honestly it's the Zoro and Usopp moments I struggle to think of more.

Sanji and Zoro's dynamic is as high as it gets, literally a match made in heaven (or hell)
My personal favourite is Luffy and Zoro, those 2 idiots were made for each other. They both set out to sea on their own with no navigational skill, no concept of danger, don’t really think things through, and are both somehow not dead because of plot.
Sanji and Usopp might not have funny moments but they do have real moments. Love when in Water 7 after Luffy and Usopp fight, Sanji and Chopper go near the Merry to make sure he overhears the flood coming. Plus Sanji makes sure Usopp doesn’t see them to not make him feel bad.

Nami and Zoro is easy S to me cause they act like an old married couple in early series arcs. Nami constantly nags him and complains about pretty much anything and Zoro constantly takes the bait and walks directly into arguments he’s not gonna win constantly. I think it’s great
The Jimbei and Sanji dynamic is also hilarious to me cause Sanji is constantly finding things to be angry at Jimbei over and Jimbei just doesn’t notice at all. It’s A tier at least imo

No matter which dynamic is somebody’s favorite, I think we can all agree that Zoro and Sanji are the most iconic duo in one piece.
I definitely disagree on where you put Sanji and Usopp. Sanji is the Straw Hat that understands Usopp’s importance to the crew the most and is Usopp’s personal bodyguard and supporter. He understands Usopp’s struggles with his self worth and does the best he can to get him to see his strengths.
Alabasta: Sanji took over the fight against Mr 2 after he beat Usopp and got his goggles back.
Skypiea: Sanji looked to Usopp to get them on Enel’s ship.
Water 7: he knew how Luffy’s words would hurt Usopp and kicked Luffy away before he could continue. He was one of the crew calling out to him not to leave along with Nami and Chopper. Sanji kept an eye on Usopp and warned him about the storm after he left the crew.
Enies Lobby: Sanji saved Usopp and inspired him to take the shot to save Robin. He was cheering him on saying their sniper is the best. He was also one of the loudest cheering when Usopp returned.
Sabaody: Sanji rushed to protect Usopp, even leaving Nami with Franky to do it. He shielded Usopp from Kuma and lost it after Usopp disappeared.
Punk Hazard: Usopp mistook Nami in Sanji’s body. When Nami corrected him Usopp was disappointed.
Wano: Usopp was talking about possibly getting captured and Sanji said he’d protect him.

Luffy and Sanji's dynamic was done such a disservice here. Like, the placement is ultimately fine but he just glosses over it so quickly. Didn't even touch on Drum Island, Skypeia, Sanji escorting Luffy to the rooftop in Wano, they've been grouped up tons of times to great effect
I know he isn't a straw hat but Law and Luffy is an easy S tier dynamic. Law in all of Punk Hazard with all the strawhats but especially with Luffy had me crying tears of joy. Law having chopper tied to his head then as a key chain was priceless. Luffy trusting Law completely and everyone reaction was amazing too. I haven't began to go on about Dressrosa and Wano. Luffy just dragging Law around like Corazon once did is just perfection. Law and Luffy bickering during Wano and how Law finally learning to use Luffy as a wild card in his plans. I miss their dynamic but I know we'll see it again before the story over so for now I'm excited to see all of Jimbei dynamic because he's my favorite strawhat.

One of my all time favorite Luffy Nami moments isn’t even technically canon but it captures their dynamic and complete understanding of each other’s character. The episode where the crew loses their memories to the seahorse artifact. Nami does not remember but Luffys does. And she tries to bribe Luffy with money for a ride and he keeps saying no over and over until he reveals that he knows Nami would never give him the gold anyways. She loves money.
