The days have been passing by so quickly and I'm high-key very upset that we still haven't had much snow in NYC yet :( There's been a lot going on at work lately and in the tech industry in general. I have so much more to say and wish that I can just candidly have an open and honest convo with you all but I tried to share some of those thoughts in this video. I survived a first round of layoffs in October but unfortunately was impacted during the second round in January. It’s such a crazy time and so sad to see how many people have been and continue to be impacted. Wishing those who are currently dealing with this, a lot of well wishes in finding new opportunities ✨

So sorry to hear about your colleagues who got laid off. I've went through this myself and even though it was 6 years ago I still get a bit emosh remembering how upset my colleagues were. Anyhoo, we've all survived and moved on. Btw, you definitely have a cookbook in you, or at least a food stylist. Very impressive.

As a Product Owner on a very busy Product team, I know what you mean about all the meetings! I try to be very cognizant of my tech people's time since they have to do the actual tech work. I cut the meetings short when I can. Your hard work will pay off!

I quit a job like 3 times, once got laid off in the great recession, always it opened a new unexpected door I couldn't have predicted (sometimes amazingly good), always refreshed my whole life not just my work, sometimes coincided with a move to a bed city. It's never been a bad thing. However, when I got laid off in the GR, there were really no jobs to be had, 100's of people in my city (SF) were all in same boat; I was so desperate I even applied to coffee shop jobs. But, out if the blue an old employer called me up and he needed someone, so Ieaped at it even though I had to move back to a small city. Life takes so many odd turns, we don't always get to control everything. But I guess we just have to be grateful and take it with grace, things could be way worse. Anyway, Julia, I can sense the anxiety in you, you're a very sensitive women, but you of all people will always do even greater things whatever happens. And like you said, opportunities open up.

Dear Julia...I am a retired dialysis nurse. I only read about the tech layoffs online news. For some reason I did not associate the layoffs with creators etc. Nursing insulated me I guess. I do hope you will have a great year and not be impacted. But I will say that these layoffs must cause many folks to look at avenues and interests not thought of before. I wonder what I would do if I was in tech industry. (There were no computers when I was in high school). Maybe you could make a list of dream assignments that could be shared. Freelance assignments......travel, book authors and exotic places or even "a day in the life of a child in school or of a minimum wage woman or a nurse!

The layoffs were definitely a shocking and scary time. I work on the creative side of UI/UX, and luckily I'm at a smaller creative agency, but I've had a lot of friends in the larger tech industry go through this recent layoff. Very sad and scary. Hope you continue to do well and take care of yourself! Sending well wishes to all of your coworkers who were unfortunately affected. And by the way, gonna end this comment on a positive note, the dance was super cute :)

I started self studying in October (Full Stack Engineer) and I've been on pause the last month because of all the negative remarks I've been hearing. I was hoping to switch over to tech from healthcare but now I am scared. I was already hearing how difficult it is to get a job being self taught, this feels like the icing on the cake. Hard to stay positive during these times but I believe everything happens for a reason.
im currently doing the same thing (self studying but for programming) and i feel you !! i dont know were you from but here is doesnt matter if you went to school or did it yourself as long as you have the skills and rock your interview… i believe in you ❤
Yes, I have a handful of friends who wanted to go to a boot camp this year but have since pivoted 😭 I do believe that tech is a cool place to be and that it will get better eventually but it's just going through a rough patch right now. So if this is really what you want to do in the long run, I would encourage you to not give up 💪

when did you start dancing and how did you learn? OMG is so addictive even the dance whenever i hear it i always picture the moves in my head 😅
SO ADDICTIVE! It's still in my head and it's been weeks or months now loll I started dancing in college and just went to workshops and learned from there. I did dabble in ballet growing up though so I think the foundations helped :)
I've been on the chopping block before during layoffs in the legal industry (2008-2010) and thankfully the hard work I put in saved me from being laid off at the time. Now that I'm in the tech industry, I saw the writing on the wall months ago and didn't want to make a move to another company when things were so unstable. My company is currently making some changes and the hope is there won't be layoffs but we have to wait a few months to see if the current measures will pan out.
Regarding the work day being filled with meetings, I completely agree that a ton of meetings on any given day can make it difficult to sit and focus on work. The team I'm on has no meetings on Wednesday morning (not even standup), which is super helpful to focus solely on code.
I follow Sarah as well and really enjoy her content! Super awesome that you both are friends IRL!
