TDR Nova. Get it, I use it on all my mixing, it's so good.
It's a dynamic EQ, so it'll make frequencies quieter like an EQ, but only when it goes over a certain volume. Very useful when an instrument has an annoying frequency on certain notes, but on other notes you want that frequency. Also what's great it has a button that shows you what it's cutting out, so you have full control over it!

I have to say I regret not giving Garillion 2 a try. I used to read about it but didn't like the limitations. Right now I'm impressed with how much it can actually do and how good it sounds. By the way, S.LA.X has three sound coloration modes (FLAT, FAT 1, FAT 2). They can be accessed with "+" icon in the top right corner. It's one of my favorite compressors.

Check out Melda Productions "Free bundle" as well, very comprehensive set of plug ins.
Then there's the DeadDuck "free bundle" also well worth a look.
Gvst does a nice collection too.

Yes there are lots of "free" plugins out there to get us started.
The paid for plugins are generally newer, more up to date code, quicker and easier to work with, and have more features.
When our ears get good enough, and experience grows, they become worth paying for.
But if you are just learning, free plugs are great ;0)
