    What a beautiful job, Paul is a great panel beater. Just doing a 67 impala for the wife. Bare metal everywhere from factory. Just takes one bad windscreen guy and its a mess right down to the hinge pillars. Had the same with my old Chrysler regal se. Valiants do have a coating but it definitely didn't stop rust. Built my regal se 30 years ago and sealed the windscreen with silicone not caulking compound. No rust after 500,000 ks in all types of weather. My old tradesmen said these cars would last forever if they had modern sealants and paints like a modern shitbox. How right he was . Please paint it black with a set of Cragars mate had a nice one when we were kids.

    Great stuff as always Paul. This is my normal work schedule doing this exact type of repair on rusty roofs- especially HQ- WB Holdens. Always interesting to see how the same techniques used by yourself is no different to how I have tackled this repair each time. The only difference is I remove the whole skin off the vehicle to get better hammer dolly access. It gets really tricky when the gutter has gone too - thats hunt for a donor roof which is normally what I do first before starting the job - to be on the safe side of choices!

    amazing repair looks great
    exactly right no rust protection on the bare metal
    also in the earlier holdens fx fj etc they wet rubbed the bodies when preping for paint so the rust started from factory

    very nice work you do. respect for that.
    You forget to take care of yourself when you clean lead from the car. as you do, lead particles will be in the air for up to 24 hours. Use a gas burner and wire brush instead.

      Thank you! Interestingly I'm editing a longer version of this video at the moment, there is a section on lead joins and Paul does say he would usually gas burn the lead. Great to have a viewer from Denmark! We are in New Zealand.

    Nice job on that repair.
    All Holdens were the same up to the Commodore. I did my apprenticeship on early Holdens and that's what we all knew - no paint .. at all ... on the inner panels. Dipping the bodies at the factory obviously reduces corrosion but that never happened. Door skins, lower A pillar sections, underfloor cross-members, rocker panels, front subframes ... nothing was protected.

    My dad gas axed his old HQ Holden Kingswood station wagon about 25 years ago because it was full of that much rust.
    I have to.pull my VL Commodore apart which is full of that much rust as well,the right hand rear C pillar section needs to be removed so I can cut out the rust holes which are underneath where the 1/4 window garnish normally is fitted.
    They rusted out badly as well but they were zinc plated at the factory when they were brand new I think,the bodys were dipped in something !

      This car also belongs to my dad so that's why I'm going to this length to restore it, it has a priceless historical value. In saying that I still wish GM did a better job spraying them! Also the vinyl roof doesn't help.

      No, I worked in the bodyshop at Holdens Elizabeth plant. we were still making the VL's when I started. and after the body shells left the body shop they were not zinc plated. they were dipped in a rust preventative coating but it was just basically the lower half of the body shell. the rest was just primed , some by robots, and other areas by hand the robots couldnt reach. after we went to the VN though, we had a new Elpo full body dip installed as part of the new paint shop. this involved the body being completely submerged in pre primer rust proofing coating, giving the bodies, including every nook and cranny, that even the best paint and priming can't do, a far superior protection against rust.

    This is why they are dipped in a giant primer tank , my mate had to go into Nissan Sunderland UK when the place was on a shutdown to weld the cracks in the dipping tank , said he had to use breathing gear inside the tank .

    Good score under there, I’ve got a one tonner and the whole framework under the skin was completely shot 😭. Don’t know why GM thought 3 layers of steel on steel with no rust protection would ever last

      Nice to have a win like that especially when other parts are so bad. I guess GM didn't really think these cars would be around 53 years later, A bit more spray in certain areas certainly would have been appreciated though.

    They are constructed from thin mild steel. What else would they do? A metal totally unsuited for outdoor purposes unless heavily galvanised.

    GMH could have pre primed those panels to prevent rusting, that's if weld through primer was available then.

      They are sprayed with that reddish looking paint, I think its etch primer they just miss the hard to get to spots.

    Should have removed the hole roof skin and repaired it
    Then you could clean up and treat the rusty structure underneath

    The only thing i don't get, and I understand its just necessary to repair like this, if we ever cut a panel hasn't it lost its rigidity? We work on it to make it look new but underneath its been cut and shut someone would say...like we would do this to a newer car as its a write off you know...Im trying to say something here but not woridng it the best

      I spoke to Paul about the settings, he was saying they have 3 welders and each one runs at a different setting so to give you a number could possibly set you wrong. He said it's a case of getting a couple bits of metal and just trialing.
