Its so nice to see a Pick based player become as successful as Cody. We need to break that stereotype that you MUST finger pick in order to become a great Bassist.
Being honest here. I didn't know what to expect because I didn't know anything about Cody aside from his incredible playing. So for him to teach picking technique, I wasn't sure if he could teach it. But man, he taught it like a legit educator. I have even more respect for him. I need to learn to use the pick now...
+Rafescow I love Bobby like a father and am lucky enough to call him a dear friend! He's wonderfully supportive of what I do and is always there for me. An A+ guy.
35+ years as a finger style bass player. Have come to appreciate the percussive style of a pick in certain situations, but usually find pick players to approach bass lines like a lower register guitar. This dude is like Bobby Vega, his pick style sounds like a bass. Good shit, man.
Absolutely smashed it. The best lesson on you tube for pick playing. Thanks for sharing your technique it's just a matter of perseverance and practice.
I have always been that man who hated playing or players who play with a pick. Fingers only on the Bass I thought. But when my right shoulder dislocated 14 years ago and never went back into socket, I had to change the way I plaid. I use Black Mountain Thumb Picks now and can't believe how much fun I get out of playing the Bass again. I did give up for a good 10 years but no stopping me know.
This is probably the thirtieth pick video I've been watching over the last three weeks - this one covered all my questions! Thank you so much for this!
Mostly been a finger player but lately have been working on my plectrum skills. Played guitar quite a bit over the past several years so that has helped a lot. Been hunting for MY favorite plectrum ... trying all kinds of shapes, sizes and thickness. I finally bought some of these Prime Tone Dunlops that Cody referenced in the video ... I think my quest is done. They work/sound awesome on my basses with flat wounds AND my basses with round wounds! That's where I've been .. one pick for flats, one for rounds ... Cheers!
Thanks Cody! I recently found out about bobby vega and was blown away. I was mostly a finger style player and started with the pick several years ago. I'm learning this pick technique and it was a very helpful video. One thing I find is that it feel more natural for me to hold the pick between my thumb and pad of my finger instead of the thumb and first index knuckle as you appear to do. One problem is that my finger nail can catch on the upstroke.
+Cody Wright Music I really appreciate your smooth playing style, as well as your calm demeanor! My primary instrument was guitar as well, but while in music school, I became more interested in the bass and piano and now my daily work mostly revolves around these two, so I can see where you coming from.
Excellent illustration, and I really like your tone and phrasing. I'm also a Bobby Vega fan. I've been playing for eons, and I started out playing fingerstyle with my first and index fingers, then I worked in my ring finger, which was quite an adjustment; and it still is at times. But I've always wanted to play with a pick too, but it always feels so uncomfortable, and I really struggle with it. Thank You, Cody! I'm going to shop for some picks, and I'm going to start working on what you've shown on the video. Best regards!
I saw him with Eric Gales last friday at "Guitares en scène" Festival in France and wowwww! What a cool discovery! Great sound, attitude and playing! Now I want to listen all the stuff of Cody, really inspiring for the bass player I am, PEACE and thanks for this amazing gig! Greetings from France. Romain.
Hey Romain! Thank you so much! That was a really fun show and I'm so glad you were able to make it out. I'd love to come back to France soon. Thank you again and much love, Cody
Cody that was excellent thanks for sharing , I like your style a lot , now I know there's more than one way to make finger funk on my bass , I'm starting to get better at pick playing and it sounds good but always played with two fingers and thumb. I didn't like it at first but I see the need for it now . Thanks
I use my fingers more than a pick, but I"ve been studying your style and Bobby Vega's for more more tonal options. I prefer playing bass with my fingers personally but I'm always trying to incorporate different things in my playing and the pick is just another way doing that. Cool stuff.
This is a really good lesson,. Thanks Cody! BTW I like your new rig much more than the SVT setup that you play on some of the clips I've seen. I like the additional clarity.
Drop the pick and listen to its tone???That my friend is great. Idea....God's continued blessings. And thanks for your gift of music video on bass...with a pick...Sound lesson EXCELLENT
I am in the same boat as you cody, a primarily lead guitarist formerly, but got bit by the bass bug lol. I'm nowhere near as good as u but that's not the point. I'm just inspired u stuck with the pick bc I abandoned it pretty much to get good at playing bass with my fingers. I really like ur approach to pick playing on bass it's as funky as it gets. I don't know what the point of this ramble is really lol but ur a great bassist and super unique. Now I wanna find my picks and get my chops up to par
This guy is so chill and humble. What a badass.

Bobby Vega must be so proud. What an excellent musician.
+Rafescow I love Bobby like a father and am lucky enough to call him a dear friend! He's wonderfully supportive of what I do and is always there for me. An A+ guy.
+Cody Wright Music You do deserve his support, as well as from many other greats.
+Rafescow , I like it when Bobby plays his teeth with a pick.
35+ years as a finger style bass player. Have come to appreciate the percussive style of a pick in certain situations, but usually find pick players to approach bass lines like a lower register guitar.
This dude is like Bobby Vega, his pick style sounds like a bass. Good shit, man.
The Bob Ross of bass instruction. Great job, Cody
His voice is so relaxing... xD
Damn that bass looks so damn good.
Sounds amazing as well. Zons are tone machines.
Pick is just another technique. You mastered it.
I have never heard of a pick having tone and affecting it. Learn something new everyday ! That opening groove was sick.
Absolutely smashed it. The best lesson on you tube for pick playing.

No idea why anyone would downvote this. Brilliant.
I recently lost feeling in my right hand and decided to switch to playing with a pick. This is a great video. Thanks for posting.
Great lesson from a very bright and accomplished musician. Thanks Cody!

You are a true inspiration, and your approach is so relaxed, yet entirely professional. Great video.

Cody...GOOD job! This is a very informative bass lesson. You tips on picks is totally unique! You’ve managed to cover stuff other bass teachers don’t.
Thank you Cody, you're making me better.
+Tommy Stormstereo Wow. Thank you, Tommy!

beautiful timing and brilliant sound! Thank you for inspiring me!
Cody knows his stuff man.
The reason most people don't like bass players using picks... is they sound nothing remotely like this!
the first and only lesson on playing bass that actually helped me A LOT!!! Wonderfully done!
+Rom .Sen Thank you!

Great lesson and what a great player.
Really great mr Cody !
Brilliant - thanks a lot Cody! I'm inspired to work harder on my pick playing.
Some interesting pointers here.
Thank you.
You're the first one i see in a video trying to teach how to use a pick that is using a picking technique correctly congrats
It's worth mentioning that a major part of this style seems to involve a LOT of palm mute in the picking hand. That's why it sounds so clean
Nice pocket and muting technique. I could groove to this all day!
I saw him with Eric Gales last friday at "Guitares en scène" Festival in France and wowwww! What a cool discovery! Great sound, attitude and playing! best course showing the technique of bobby. thanks a lot.
Cody that was excellent thanks for sharing , I like your style a lot , now I know there's more than one way to make finger funk on my bass , I'm starting to get better at pick playing and it sounds good but always played with two fingers and thumb. I didn't like it at first but I see the need for it now . Thanks
+Mark S B. Thank you! It's really fun because it's still relatively unexplored in many genres!
Awesome player!
great work cody!
Gonna apply this to my tumb picking. Thank you!
Awesome lesson!
I use my fingers more than a pick, but I"ve been studying your style and Bobby Vega's for more more tonal options. I prefer playing bass with my fingers personally but I'm always trying to incorporate different things in my playing and the pick is just another way doing that. Cool stuff.
Great advice! Thank you!
Thanx , Great Playing.
Excellent as always. Any tips regarding muting when using a pick?

Would you Pivot your hand while using a Pick like you do with finger picking?
Great lesson
Ty , now I learn what new for the bass ;)
fantastic. Not a pick player, but I really love your groove and tone here. Making me want to get better with my lick grooving. :)
I'm still learning, but I find myself just grabbing the pick when practicing. I'll just stick to it. Fingers will be secondary. Thanks for the vid.
And very talented
awesome!!
Very impressive
I am proud because I have independently chosen the same pick :p
Background as a Guitar player...What made Cody play Bass???
odd question but where did you get your hat? lovely playing too.
Hey Peter,
It's made by my good friend Kerry Lathon. You can check out his stuff right here:

What type of pick brush you like 👍
Bruh*
can you play with pick and fingers at the same time? i like to pick n pop
Man, I catch hell trying to play with a pick. Can't feel the bass like I want to using the pick. I hope this works for me.
Love this. :D
.............. ohhh my - the lick at the end ... is just lightning ....
Do you use a little of reverb?
i love my jim dunlop ,picks
🙏✊👊
Cody what kind of stings do you use?
Cody Can you explain the use of the gruv gear fret wrap please
+Le Bassist It's just to mute the strings that I'm not using when I'm tapping or playing high up on the neck!
Dude, you are the BOMB! ... Did you get inspired by Bobby Vega a bit? ;)
u would say on bass lighter pick like 0.60 or 0.71 sounds much better on bass .
are you the Bob Ross of bass!?
