I always travel with a single backpack, I've made it work (indefinitely) with 22L, but my "luxury" setup fits in the Haize Project 38L, which to me feels more like 30L. No doubt, traveling has changed my life, often times with no plan. Life is better when you travel light enough for the wind to take you where you need to be in that moment.
My only mention would be bandaids and some children’s Benadryl. I typically travel with my kids but a chewable Benadryl has helped me and others around me a ton if someone has a random reaction to something. They come in their own little container too so you can have just a couple with you with no room taken up.
word from your health care professional friend and fellow bag nerd, use (children's) cetirizine/zyrtec instead, it works just as fast and well for most folks and lasts longer... diphenhydramine/benadryl/first gen antihistamines generally--they're kinda messy from a side effect profile perspective. zyrtec makes many people just a little maybe sleepy/zoney but not knocked out and doesn't interfere with sleep cycles the way benadryl (and alcohol btw) does. NOT MEDICAL ADVISE, just a word from a well intentioned friend❤❤😊😊😉

My packing list has to start with BELT. Nothing worse than not having it and needing it 😂. Love the pastor chase wisdom, reminds me of a speech called A Matter of a Few Degrees by Elder Uchtdorf. Worth checking out!
Great tips ... I did something similar earlier this year for a 3-week trip to Oz - but I "ranger rolled" all my clothes and ended up with 5 complete sets (t/underwear/pants/shirts/socks) + shoes and sandals, plus some tech and photo gear - all in cabin baggage.
Layering option that skips the puffer: merino t shirt, merino LS, Alpha Fleece crew (look up Senchi Designs) Montbell rain jacket. Ultralight, every layer can be swapped out.
Senchis are great for backpacking, but if I'm traveling I don't want to look like a muppet. Better to get a more conventional fleece fabric for travel, Kuiu makes one that's around 7 oz and still has a "normal" look.
You’re very lucky you can get away with flimsy sandals for EVERYTHING. Having been a runner for over 51 years and run almost 2 dozen full marathons (in my mid 30’s through about 50), my feet need the support and I need to wear and pack shoes with good support. That takes room, although I can wear the main pair on the plane. I'm still running (jogging) at over 66 years old. My feet are kind of beat up, but my legs and knees are still good. I can vouch for the Goruck GR1, great sturdy, simple pack. I’m thinking of adding a water bottle pocket to mine for my next trip because water bottle pockets are the thing now, and they do come in really handy. That's one thing I always wished the Goruck had when I used it. I went to the Western Rise site and there’s nothing over 40 waist for guys! Plus, a lot of the 36, 38 and 40’s are all sold out, so you can see most guys are not on the super slim side. I wish these tech clothing companies would quit catering to the super skinny or teens. Even though back in the day I used to wear like a 33, I have gained some weight over the years and at my peak was wearing 40, even 42 at times. Now, I have lost a few pounds again, so 40 is good, MAYBE 38 would fit, but I don’t see any 33’s in my future. You really sold me on the Seadon shirts a couple years ago, so I ordered a bunch and at XXL size. However, they were WAY too small, and I had to send them all back. Their sizing was unreal. No way those were XXL. Not according to the XXL I buy normally. I like a little extra give in my T’s because an XL had been a smidge too tight, but these were at most Mediums. The materials were great, though.
You need to put the shoes in a bag! They pick up chemicals, pesticides, etc and you don’t want that gunk in your bag or worse, rubbed onto your clothes.

Any concern that most of these bags do not meet the Personal Item dimensions of some of the budget airlines? For instance, Frontier "Size: 14"H X 18"W X 8"D including handles, wheels and straps...NOTE: The size of your personal item will be checked during boarding. Items larger than the allowed dimensions are subject to an additional charge." I got a Tomtoc Travel 28L and am hoping that its 18.11 x11.81 x7.87 will avoid any attempt to charge as a carry on.
I travel weekly and my typical experience has been that small backpacks don't get checked and if they do it just has to fit easily into the bin. Your bag will be fine. I typically use the tombihn synapse 25 which has larger dimensions than a frontier or spirit carry on but slides in bin with no problem.
My bag, the Roark shown in this video, DID get checked and I was able to stuff it in no problem. TRICK: pull out the overshirt/jacket, tie it around your waist covering the fanny pack. Can also throw on a few extra layers if you really need to remove stuff from bag. Frontier has these nice big boxes and all you gotta do is stuff it, so any soft sided bag not fully packed works.

I'd recommend trying out one item from Western Rise for example, see how it compares *longevity* wise to stuff you pay less for. You may be surprised how the numbers work out. As to affordable merino, let me know what you find out there. Proof, unbound, western rise, are my go-tos.

You bring a synthetic and a merino t-shirt, but you hike in the cotton one, that absorbs and retains the most moisture? I also go commando pretty much 98% of the time. Only if I'm wearing light coloured and thin pants I don't. I also sleep naked 100% of the time. Had these 2 habits since way before I got into minimal/one bag travel, but when I did, they ended up saving me a noticeable amount of space in my bags. BTW, my favourite personal item bags are the Evergoods CTB20 and the Goruck Bullet 18L double compartment (which I am 100% positive fits quite a bit more than 18L).

If you were allowed to take it on the plane with or without the 50EUR+ fine, you'd have nowhere to put your feet when you jammed it under the seat! I fly personal item only anyplace, any length of time but the dimensions I'm typically working to are 40cm x 20cm x 25cm which is a 20L bag although you can often fit anything below 30L in the sizer if it's soft sided and you underfill it.

Yeah you didn't weigh the bag at the end.Most airlines in Asia weigh all carry on now. So size and weight of bag are very closely looked at now.
