Can Minimalists own Luxury?

  • Is it a must for a minimalist to reject luxury? I mean, we know that conspicuous consumption is frowned upon, and we should turn down excessive consumerism. So I guess it's obvious that there's no room for luxury in a minimalist life, right?
Let's talk about the relationship between minimalism and luxury in this video.

For me, a good luxury item would be an item which I could use on a daily or regular basis without much compromise and lasts for a long period of time, such as your wallet or phone, and even certain pieces or types of clothing.
I find that the best “luxury” items are the ones which brings a cost per usage (CPU) of less than a dollar. For example, if you were to purchase an iPhone now for about $1,200 and plan to use it for the next 4 years, I would say it is a good luxury investment, because the CPU of you using that iPhone would be less than a dollar per day (assuming you use it daily). Or if you purchase a wallet for $300 and use it for 10 years, the CPU would be 16 cents a day.
However, many people usually use luxury products for “special events”, which, let’s face it, is quite rare (think about the special cutlery or dinnerware which you use when guests come over, or wearing that luxury watch for formal events). While I can understand the reason why, I would say use your luxury products more often than you think you should. Some of these products even wear off or break down if you do not use it after extended periods of time, making you regret purchasing it in the first place. Hence, I feel that it helps you appreciate the product more when you use it as compared to when it is sitting in its case in that branded paper bag in your special cupboard.

To me i want "less stuff, higher quality stuff". I'd rather start owning less pieces but each piece is is good quality and perfect for me to last awhile. Although it defeats my financial minimal goal to go out and change out all my current existing items. But i can at least do this with future things

I am not a person who go for luxury product. I am not familliar with all those brand too. When I think of owning just one wallet, one watch, etc., I will go for something good quality. It might not be equal to luxury product though, trust is the point here. If I trust the company, if I agree witheir movement and intention, I will buy their product even though a little pricey.

It can be a pain if u are use to having so much. i see it that we are born into not having alot to start but colect over time as if we need it. but now as times change and habits change u see what u need and what u want so u buy less and decide what to still keep any cause as we live and get to the end in ways we gonna see we dont need or have a want for stuff like we used to any. so save more and leave rest at stores to let others feel they need it so much and then become overwhelmed with having too much anytime lol..

Since becoming a minimalist I’ve been buying significant less, however the purchases I do make are sometimes “luxury” because I choose to pick quality over quantity
For example, I use to have over 20 cheap fast fashion bags. After becoming a minimalist, I’ve downsized and kept only the ones I actually used on a regular basis, and any new bags I have bought have been luxury bags that I know will use often and will have for decades to come

Great notes on the idea of "luxury" meaning different things to each of us. What some people consider luxury might be essential to others. For example, flying first class might be essential if you're disabled and need to lie down flat during an international flight.

I'm currently waiting for my upcoming book on status to get through the publishing hoops. Until that time, my own insight is that there are 5 consumer markets (straight out of hospitality and travel): economy, midscale, premium, luxury, and another (you'll have to buy my book, CK). Economy is easy: you get 2 or more units of benefit for every additional unit of cost. Midscale and premium gets you 1 unit of benefit for every unit of additional cost. Luxury gets you 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 etc units of benefit for every unit of additional cost. I'm going to tell it to you straight: minimalists run away from luxury once they realize all of the value is to be found in premium. Pareto would be proud.

Honest reflection on an interesting topic. I have to admit that I am a watch guy, since quite a while. I don’t consider myself a minimalist but like some of the practises as they work for me. And they make me actually think more about purchases. I love watches but I at least limit myself to a set quantity of watches in the collection. This makes me think more about whether I really want a new watch, as I have to let go another out of the collection.

Luxury for me is that I can enjoy a t-shirt, a car, watch or else just all by myself without anybody else around. If it tingles joy only when others see or comment on it then that is definitly not luxury. However, if I have loved ones that enjoy it equally, like a decent meal, a boat or else then that is acceptable luxury as well.

@skystink We all have different reasons why we adopt minimalism, whether it's financial or space. So it still depends what's your intention of reducing them.
If they are still considered as your hobbies and you still love using those equipment, then I guess it's fine to keep them, unless they are hurting you financially. Even so, you might consider setting a limitation to the amount of gears you have instead of totally dropping your hobbies. Make minimalism fit your lifestyle, and not minimalize your whole life.
      Hope this can help!

Additional thoughts/questions about logos are: Does it give you status and/or prestige? A vehicle (car, truck, etc.), in good/excellent condition, at most any price will get you from point A to point B. Over time, certain features like seat belts, air conditioning, power windows, radio/players, became standard equipment. Your video shows several other logos that are truly status makers.
Do you like paying companies for their product to give them free advertising? An exception here is that some companies have employee uniforms with their name and/or logo, so the customers/clients can identify the worker. However, shoes would not have a logo on them unless the company requires a certain footwear for the job they do (construction) and the maker attaches their own logo.
In the end, either the item gets a new look or new features are added so what you have becomes outdated; or the item wears out.

This could be a difficult topic to opine about considering the difference between luxury and quality and how the designation is often blurred. Before honing my minimalist lifestyle, greatly aided by your channel, I considered buying relativity cheap items only to discover the savings didn't necessarily equate to value. As you mentioned buying a quality item that lasts much longer and is more dependable is certainly worth the extra money. Over the long run becomes a better value but that's not necessarily luxury. Flying first class, luxury; eating at an exclusive restaurant, luxury; tailored clothes, luxury. A previous commentator made a great comment about luxury of whom I hope doesn't mind if I mention (Justin Lam), his point: if luxury is pursued in excess then the standard of what we consider to be luxury moves higher as we become more accustomed to a standard of luxury. Therefore this stimulates the endless pursuit for higher and higher standards of luxury. With that being said the minimalist has the advantage in that moderation is the foundation and philosophy of the minimalist lifestyle. So, with moderation (which is necessary in aspects of life) luxury can be enjoyed by the minimalist. Arguably the minimalist is capable of truly appreciating luxury because of therefore said moderation.
As always, I thoroughly enjoy your content and this channel certainly has been an inspiration with my own journey with minimalism.

I think that you get better quality at a higher price up to a point, and beyond that point, the additional cost is only for the brand/image. You will get better shoes if you pay $100 for quality shoes instead of $20 for cheap shoes, but the quality doesn’t increase tenfold if you pay $1000 instead of $100. I hope that makes sense!

With the shit economy of my country I was born into minimalism. So when I see people talking about brands just sounds like an alien talking about another world. That doesn't prevent people from judging you for being poor and doesn't prevent me from thinking Louis Vuitton bags are ugly.

Well... It sure looks like every minimalist influencer on yt owns everything luxury 😆 they look rich, not minimalist... It often feels too unrelatable; not the owning less part but the "owning unnecessary expensive overpriced lux stuff" part

Minimalism is for the rich. Poor are already minimalists.

luxury should only be applied in non material things, luxuty has nothing to do with minimalism, you're just slave of luxury objects and you're trying to excuse that... you're misunterstanding quality with luxury, luxury is luxury, you don't need to buy the most expensive thing to get quality or craft... this is not at all minimalism, stop the excuses, the luxury only attaches you more to the object, there's nothing else in that object than the subjective way you look at it

and you know it's ok to like luxury objects, but don't try to pass it like minimalism because it isn't in any way
