    I agree, Clemson was put at a disadvantage by not playing top talent. This gave them a false sense of their abilities...but (as you mentioned) there were danger signs. The X factor was Joe Burrow. His experience (coach’s son and student of the game), talent, demeanor and leadership made LSU unstoppable on offense. I knew Clemson wouldn’t be able stay with LSU under Burrow. Kudos to the Tigers...a season for the ages!

    • @eddiecarlton3438

      I disagree, No Burrow..No Championship.. It had nothing to do with who Clemson or anybody else played.,Clemson could have been in the SEC this year and would have lost to LSU so please stop using that .It sort of looks like you wanted Clemson to win if they had better opportunities.

      @@chaynebaltezore8986 I think you are misunderstanding what I am saying. Clemson was claiming to be disrespected because they had not lost in 29 games. LSU's mantra all year has been "We are 0-0, this is a new game. the past doesn't matter". Clemson was seeking respect for what they had done previously. LSU is saying, "you will respect us after we do what we are about to do." It shows a fundamental difference in mentality and I believe was a big part of LSU's amazing season. "Block out the noise and do your job!!" Just like what Coach O said when they went from 1 to 2 in the polls. he said "We will play anybody, anywhere". Clemson said, "We should be #1 because we are defending champions and deserve that respect." See the difference?

    @johnnychaos152 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Honestly I think that Trevor Lawrence simply found himself in totally foreign territory when Clemson ended up in a significant hole. He has never really faced adversity. The ACC has been underwhelming for a couple of years and he has rarely been challenged in conference play. In the playoffs last year both Notre Dame and Alabama had major issues on defense and he was able to exploit it. This year however they struggled mightily with Ohio State and required some questionable officiating and miserable redzone play by the Buckeyes in order to secure a win. If Ohio State came away with TDs rather than field goals they win that game by a large margin. LSU fell behind early but they simply remained calm, made the necessary adjustments, and then played their brand of football. Once the tables were turned Lawrence was clearly not comfortable with playing from behind against an equal or better opponent and it showed. When faced with some major adversity he became rattled and started playing like he was desperate just to complete a pass. And Joe Burrow is just a cold blooded assassin with so many weapons that Clemson's defense was shell shocked to the point that he just had to decide which wide open receiver to throw to.

      In 2020, when TL no longer has:
      4 senior OL guys

      Etienne
      I think it will be seen that TL is a guy who without all that game breaking elite talent at all skill positions nor those 4 senior O linemen he will degrade in value again. I disagree with the high ceiling comment. I think TL has a very high floor. Much like Herbert.

    Lawrence showed me that he has a long way to go to be a complete QB that should, as a result, maximize his chances of being a solid professional QB. That said, he's still young and learning. Not his fault, but the overall lack of elite defensive competition he has faced, and likely will face next year (though I think the ACC should be improved next year) is going to make his transition to the pros a bumpy one. I'm not hating on the guy. He has top-of-the-charts physical ability, is a hard worker, and appears to be smart. LSU literally made Clemson lay down and quit even trying to compete in that game from late in the 3rd quarter until the end of the game. LSU dropped a TD pass, missed a FG, kneeled down on the ball at Clemson’s 2 yard line, alone with just coasting on offense the entire 4th quarter just trying to burn the clock. Clemson’s defense benefited early from great punting and BV effectively bringing pressure up the middle while taking away check downs. One of the differences I see in Burrow compared to Tua is that Burrow is less instinctive than Tua is. Burrow is more process oriented play to play. So he usually won’t throw the Int when he gets hurried... but he will take the sack.

    If perspective carries into the next season, Clemson should have this weigh just as heavily against them as Alabama did this year. When you play a schedule like they did and then get handled, that conversation should take place for the committee. You can’t say one year, “Well Alabama didn’t get challenged and when they did they weren’t that good” and then the EXACT same thing happen to Clemson this year. Dabo always says no one respects Clemson or they are viewed like the other top programs are. When you win a title, win 29 in a row and tell the whole country we are the best, you have to take the criticism as well. They play a terrible schedule and it’s even easier in 2020 somehow and when they played a better team they showed they just beat up on bad teams.

    Fun show. I enjoyed it. If you like entertaining suggestions, I think it would help to find a way to segregate stats that are meaningful and stats that are not representative of the team.
    Josh Pate hates stats but admits some cannot be ignored, but he calls the only stats that matter as "padlock stats." Meaning I thought Late Kick was definitely taking an earlier opinion that LSU's defensive performances versus their potential and finally executing up to their potential - were not aligned, and he was seeing it much earlier.
    Maybe adding in position matchups, skill analysis, trends are things that could help. Because it is true, some stats seem to hold up until they don't.
    Trevor Lawrence's performance was impeded by the defensive play of LSU. He had success in the previous championship game because his receivers were catching a high number of poorly thrown balls, that were caught partially because they got lucky and partially due to Bama's defenders not making plays. But Lawrence got pressure in this game forcing him to release early and never really in my mind was an accurate passer the begin with. The media hyped him up.
    Some statistics simply never play out. Over the course of this year, I knew that watching Clemson games and individual players or their front seven on defense in the ACC was padding their numbers.
    While I knew LSU's problems at defense were not systemic, but rather a matter of not focusing, in other words repairable. AND it does matter who you play and how tough competition helps over the course of a season.
    Burrow gas a professional mind in that whatever defensive scheme he sees, he finds the vacated space or zone to exploit.
    And something needs to be said just how good an offensive line is when you can go completely empty without needing extra chip blockers in like a TE, FB, or a tailback.
    The defense therefore was playing catch up to the offense. That's what I saw. But I almost unsubscribed from a couple of sites because they would try to use a stupid argument like Auburn lost by three and lost four games so watch how bad LSU' defense will do against Clemson, OR look at how bad they played against Ole Miss.
    You guys kind of chastised me following the Bama game saying Stingley was put of his league when the truth was he was just susceptible to making freshman mistakes. With time he improved greatly.
    Something is wrong with stats on paper versus the development of a team up to their potential.

Everybody said our defense probably wouldn’t pull through (especially against Oklahoma), and I told them to look at injury reports from past games and the performance overall in those games. 600+ yards, but few touchdowns to compensate. They can throw all the yards they want, it’s if we can stop them from scoring that counts. Only game that truly scares me the whole season was Alabama, because they are legendary status. Trevor missed a lot of throws, and Tony Elliot did a piss poor job adjusting to that. Our offense just never seems consistent, it seems like we rely on way too many low percentage pass plays. Venables dialed up such a good defense this year, especially with some of the roster limitations, then to see our offense, which has so much talent underperform, is disappointing. I cant help but think a better OC would put together a much more productive offense. Give LSU all the credit, it would have been really tough for Clemson to win. There are probably only a handful of teams in history that would have been able to hang with this team. It happens. Prime example: Clemson finished the season with the nation's number one defense. But LSU made minced meat out of them just like they did everyone else with the exception of Auburn and Georgia. So to Clemson fans who think that the SEC is overrated, explain how LSU was able to take a knee and basically mercy rule your team but yet Georgia and Auburn's defenses actually looked fairly decent against THE TIGERS. This inferiority complex that certain fan bases have is getting tired. Check the NFL rosters and check the National Championship winners over the last twenty years. Those two criteria clearly illustrate why the SEC is clearly on another level.

My point on incentive is and I believe it is hard to justify this "elite" status based solely on "how" you play because "how" you play is based on the competition you face. To say Clemson is elite by destroying high school teams is not right. Now, the only proof they have to be considered "elite" is a close game to Ohio State. I think both Ohio State and Clemson would have lost 1 to 2 is SEC islf they are consistently being beat up like LSU, Bama.

    • @CollegeFootballNerds
      @CollegeFootballNerds  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@H0tthedd That's not what we're debating. We're talking about the many many people who demanded that the LSU loss disqualify them. Right after Bama lost that game, droves of people came out saying it should be a disqualifier "if you don't win your division you shouldn't be in the playoffs."
      The Auburn game, relative to this specific talking point, is really immaterial. And honestly given the injury situation at the end of the year, I'm not sure we felt Alabama was a playoff team - even had they beaten Auburn.
      What we bristle at is the notion that if you lose by 5 points to the best team in the country, it should disqualify you from the playoffs because "you can't win your division" or "you didn't beat a handful of OK teams with a 8-9 win record"

    • @joelsanders429
      @joelsanders429 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CollegeFootballNerds Very good way of explaining the LSU/Auburn debate.
      About what we were talking about, I kind of look at it from a military perspective. Would you have confidence in a military division that is battle tested, or a fresh group of men with the same training, but haven't seen combat. That was Clemson's downfall. I suppose my point on incentive is, what's to stop Bama or Uga or anyone good in the SEC to change over to the ACC if your gonna cruze right into the playoffs every year by simply blowing the socks off 11 teams.
      That is what everyone is looking at when they see Clemson. A fresh team without injury because they played nobody not to mention some of the best recruiting year in and year out.
      Then you have the eye test. By now, the "eye test" has completely lost its validity proven by 5 years of CFP blowouts. Not all but many. Clemson had the eye test but no proof that they could win the big one. Maybe all this is screwed up because LSU would have made anyone look silly. Haha who knows.

      "A lot of good teams, but also a lot of cupcakes." And the point was that LSU had a number of bad defenses to beat up and pad per/game stats - which usually means season averages are artificially high. But we were discussing that Clemson barely held them below averages anyway, so either 1) Clemson's D was overrated or 2) LSU was so good the opponent didn't matter. Really think you missed the point of this discussion.
