Ear Infections in Guinea Pigs!

  • Causes, symptoms and treatment of ear infections in guinea pigs! If you suspect an ear infection your guinea pig MUST go to the vets. They will NOT get better on their own.
    Look out for
    Head shaking
    Sensitivity/pain when touched near the ears
    Scratching at the ears
    Examine for signs of pus/discharge or nasty smells
    When the infection has reached the middle or inner ear:
    Head tilting
    Loss of balance
    Rolling over
    The vet will use an otoscope to examine the ears and if an infection is present they will prescribe a course of antibiotics for treatment. They may clean out the ear and give you some cleansing fluid. They may send any discharge off to be cultured for antibiotic testing.

    My little Faith had gotten an ear infection before we had gotten her. After she had her treatment, she was left with a head tilt and would have to be put down, so we had gotten her for free. She still had a head tilt and loses balances every so often, but she has no other issues with sensitivity to the ear it with out any discharge, or smell. She appears to be in no pain and seems to enjoy life so Much. She seems to happy., and is my most lively and active piggy!

    Awww Lyra, hopefully will get better! I love this video and its so informative and detailed, some people really need to know this. Some pet owners never take their piggies to the vets which is outrageous, I believe all pets need to be taken to the vets if there is a life threatening illness they have.

    hope you don't mind me saying squeak dreams, but i noticed below you said the course was only 7days? this won't be anywhere near long enough to clear an ear infection. it will also only be treating the infection and none of the associated swelling and inflammation. a long course of antibiotics will be needed (not baytril) to get right into the deepest parts of the ears. baytril seems to make people believe symptoms are better or have gone, when really the infection can still be deeper and this is why it appears alot of the time to 'come back' when in reality it never fully went in the first place. there is a forum called the guinea pig forum which you could look to join. can't remember if you are on there already but i know your products are mentioned! there is alot of info and support on there and some members who have been through this exact thing. i hope you will consider joining :)

    My piggy is currently getting over her ear infection. She was a lot more inactive than usual and she refused to let me pet behind her ear. It sucked knowing she was in pain, but it's such a relief to know she's getting better. She's almost back to her old self (:

    My guinea pig Fiona had an inner ear infection earlier this year, actually! She didn't present with any outer ear things like pus/discharge or nasty smells or even pain. We took her to the vet as soon as we saw symptoms.
    The vet we took her to was amazing and we got Baytril for her, too. She has made a great recovery. She still has a slight head tilt, which the vet told us would probably be permanent. The only time I notice her balance and coordination being off is when she tries to stand up on her hind legs. Despite this, she earned her NTD (novice trick dog) title!

    • @SqueakDreams
      @SqueakDreams  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ariel Goshorn Hi Ariel thank you for sharing your piggy's experience! That's good to be aware of that there may not be any other symptoms. Can I ask how long she was on Baytril for? Lyra's ear is still sensitive and she won't let me anywhere near it (even though there is no head tilt anymore), so thinking the infection hasn't cleared up yet and the vet only recommended antibiotic for 7 days.

    i would really recommend you find an exotics vet to treat lyra. regular vets only have basic training in other animals and unfortunately it is very minimal. you should have been given pain relief and anti-inflammatory aswell, something like metacam. although baytril is the only licensed antibiotic, it is unfortunately not the best choice for most problems, including ear infections. the rcvs website lets you find a vet easily, and you want to select an accredited practice on there, and find one that treats exotics rather than just small mammals. i have found it really can make all the difference. :)

    • @elleb8840
      @elleb8840 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lea B alot of vets also don't seem to give pain relief which is probably the most important thing to keep them feeling more comfortable as you wait for the other treatment to take effect :)

    • @SqueakDreams
      @SqueakDreams  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Elle B Hi Elle, thank you for your comment, I did become concerned that 7 days would not be long enough after reading some of the posts on TGF. She did have a pain med injection as well that I forgot to mention, not sure what it was though. I have looked on rcvs, I go to find a vet, select accredited practice and on advanced search selected exotics under specialism... 0 results? For the whole of the UK? I must be doing something wrong?

    • @elleb8840
      @elleb8840 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Squeak Dreams it was probably an injection of metacam. these last about 24hours usually. i'll try and link the find a vet site. they're been updating it recently so hope this works findavet.rcvs.org.uk/find-a-vet/ - if not, the guinea pig forum have a vet locator on the top of their home page. i think i know roughly where you are by your accent! if i'm right then you're very near one very recommended vets. i hope you don't mind that i mentioned the vets,. i just wish someone had told me sooner than i knew because the difference in treatment is like night and day and from experience, i know that both my two rabbits wouldn't be alive if we hadn't switched, so it's something i feel really passionate about and wish that all vets had to state it. don't get me wrong, there are some non-exotics vets who take a special interest in other species and are good, especially if they get experience through helping a rescue. but with lyra being so young aswell, i thought it even more important to mention. :)

    Sara, here's a neat remedy for counter-acting the dramatic weight loss that comes with having to give long-term treatment with antibiotics to Guinea Pigs. On my Vets' recommendation, I give them flavored Yogurt. What I did was save a syringe from a previous treatment, thoroughly cleaned. I will use roughly double the amount of Yogurt as compared to the Antibiotic dose.
    Right now, one of my piggies, Dexter, is in his third week of treatment for a really vicious tooth abscess. He lost near;y 1/3 of his entire body weight because of the antibiotics removing so much of his Intestinal Flora. So, I am giving him a full 1cc of Cherry-flavored Yogurt per day, 8 hours after his .35cc dose of SMZ-TMP. I wait that long to avoid the possibility of a clash between the Antibiotic and the Bacteria in the Yogurt.
    Doing this has helped Dexter regain nearly all of the weight he lost in the early part of the treatment, and he has become playful again.
    You may wish to discuss the Yogurt option with your Vet, but mine suggested it.
    I nearly forgot this: Be careful to not give too much yogurt to a piggy. Dexters' normal weight is about 1.4kg. A smaller pig will need a lesser amount.

    • @elleb8840
      @elleb8840 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kevin S there are probiotics available for guinea pigs which can be used if needed (given 1-2 hours after the antibiotic) other useful things in times of illness are recovery food and poop soup (made from the poop of a healthy guinea pig) - yogurt is not recommended due to being dairy and therefore not easily digested by guinea pigs, making the gut even more unbalanced. it's a shame to hear a vet has recommended this. if possible, please find an exotics vet. most people don't realise how little training 'normal' vets have in relation to any animal that isn't a dog or cat. it would be like taking your dog to a rabbit and guinea pig vet who has minimal training in dogs! it doesn't make any sense! and yet people do it the other way around! i hear of so many animals getting the incorrect treatment and it's scary. there should be something in place so they have to tell you that they aren't highly trained and tell you where your closest exotics vet is.

    • @precious014e
      @precious014e 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kevin S Yogurt can be deadly if given to guinea pigs regularly. They shouldn't have it at all. I don't know how or why a vet would recommend this as they cannot digest dairy products and it will cause them a lot of problems in their GI. I go to a specialty vet and one of the first things he told me was to never give the guinea pig anything that contained dairy.

    • @precious014e
      @precious014e 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kevin S Also, I forgot to mention, if your guinea pig loses weight from being sick or as a side effect of antibiotics (mine lost over a pound) you should be giving them critical care formula to ensure they are getting proper nutrition. Exotic vets will carry this and be able to tell you the amount to give the guinea pig and how often to give it.

    I have two guinea pigs Oreo and Twix They are both Boys and I have had them for 6 months but they don't act like a lot of guinea pigs strangely.
    Oreo will allow me to pick him up so if I reached down to him he will just sit still and I can pick him up but I have never trained him to be like this he was even like this when he was a baby even though this may seem great but it means that I can't usher him towards me so I can reach him to pick him up.
    Twix on the other hand runs away from you if you just tap him and he just runs to the farthest place away from me and just sits there till he hears the latch close so I can't usher him either one time this got so bad when I just opened the latch he ran to the other side of the cage climbed into the pellet holder (I don't have a bowl by the way there's a little holder on the side of the cage) and he got stuck.
    I'm pretty sure this isn't normal guinea pig behaviour but it would really help if you answered how I can stop them from doing this!!!

    I got my guinea pig, Jeff and I've had him for two weeks. I have only recently got him out for floor time a couple times because I read you are supposed to wait a while before handling them. Anyway, when he's out for floor time, I have a huge space set for him, and he runs all around. I take out his hidey every time, but he never goes in it. Also the while time (or most of the time) he does a quieter squeak, which is more constant, and a slightly louder one, that doesn't last long at all. I have read in lots of places that this can mean he is happy or nervous. I just don't know which one it is. PLEASE HELP!! Is he happy? Or should I give him more time to get used to me before I get him out again? Please someone respond!

    • @nataliem3584
      @nataliem3584 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hannah Kandi just be patient. Two weeks is not very long. After a while you should grow a better bond with your piggy, and it won't be scared of you. It might take a while, but eventually you should be able to understand it and it's sounds better. For example, if you are feeding it veggies and it makes the sound, it means it's a good sound, and vice versa. You could also try looking up videos of the sounds to see if they sound like what you're hearing. Hope this helped

    My guinea pig has a middle ear infection that won't go away she has been put on antibiotics and it put her life at risk so the vet said since it wasn't inner ear and antibiotics are too dangerous for her that I need to see if she can just live with it. She yelps when her head gets touched and winces. One of my co-workers suggested Arnica to give to her for pain, would that be safe?

    Hi, I know this an older video. Our young guinea pig showed signs of this on Monday with head tilt and lethargic. Initially she was put on antibiotics, gut medicine and metacam. However a few days later she seemed to go backwards with a worsening head tilt and poor balance involving her circling and falling to her side. Vet has suggested swapping metacam for steroids as she had a previous case where this worked, but no guarantees. Can I ask how long was your piggie on medicine before she improved? Fortunately our little one has her appetite back bit the balance is not great. Thanks.

      Hi is your guinea pig on Baytril? My guinea has the same problem. She's eating but is still fallinv over. She has been on the med since Sunday every 12 hours. I was reading so much on Baytril. It is a Is very strong antibiotic that can be harmful to Guinea pigs if not use properly.

      @@Wooooooow739 hi, I'm in Scotland in case it makes a difference to medication prescribed. We were given cotrimoxazole. Initially once a day and then twice a day. Metacam was given for a few days before the worsening of symptoms when she was given steroids. We are currently weaning off steroids for a second time and so far, so good 🤞🏻 Willow dies appear to have a permanent head tilt but happily eats etc and her walking and balance is greatly improved and I'd say maybe 90% of what it was before. I made a TikTok page for them. Here's a link to a video where you'll see her tilt: vm.tiktok.com/ZMdty6nqD/

He does appear to have a bit of dandruff and I'm not sure if it's mites and I'm don't know why else he would be scratching. We have used the same bedding since the day we got him so I don't think it's an allergic reaction to the bedding. But our other guinea pig Peanut who lives with Rocky doesn't seem to be scratching and he doesn't have dandruff. Thanks ! :)

    Hi-- I've had my pigs for about 7 months now (about 1 1/2 years old) and they will still not allow me to pick them up. I have read everything that could possibly be read about guinea pig handling. I allow them to eat from my hand, I gave them enough time to settle in, and I've tried the towel method. I offer them floor time but since they won't allow me to pick them up, I open one of the grids from their cage. They won't walk through the open space. One of my pigs also doesn't allow me to touch her, but her nose and neck. Both of my girls aren't sick at all. What am I doing wrong?! I'm very upset about it.

    • @SqueakDreams
      @SqueakDreams  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Katie Fry Your mother really should not take on the responsibility of any pet, regardless whether the animal is a 'cheaper' pet or not. The fact is your guinea pig is an animal in pain and to not help her is animal cruelty. You must take her to a vet and get her antibiotics (probably Baytril) for the infection, otherwise she will pass away... The vet bills are not that expensive for guinea pigs. You must convince her. An ear infection is very painful :(
      If your mother still says no then please contact a rescue/animal charity who may be able to help. And you really should not take on any pets if you are going to refuse to care for them properly. Not getting them emergency help when they need it is disgraceful.

      +Squeak Dreams We got my piggy to the vet now so yay! She loves her medicine though...its kinda wierd. She gets excited and tries to eat the syringe before we even get the stuff in it. Then we don't have to force it into her mouth. She just drinks it on her own. Lol...the vet did say it was cherry flavored...

      Hi Katie I'm so happy to hear that! Maybe the medicine is septrin? It is meant to taste good to piggies. How is she with her ear?

    • @katelynnfry
      @katelynnfry 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good so far. She never really had any signs of pain, aside from when the vet stuck a cotton swab in that ear. Her head tilt is still there but it's going away. She has a bit more balance too.

    Hi can head rolling be confused with popcornings? Because when my guinea pig's in the cage she doesn't do these head rolls, then when she's out and all happy she popcorns and head rolls at the same time. Is this bad? Please answer.

    • @SqueakDreams
      @SqueakDreams  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there, this was about 6 years ago (Lyra is still going strong!) so I struggle to remember - but I think it was a short course, 5-7 days and she did fine. I think most of the infection was removed by the vet when he got a ball of pus out of her ear! I have had others do not so well with Baytril so definitely keep an eye on them and give probiotics when they are on it :)

      You must take him in for a tilt. Antibiotics are relatively inexpensive, here in the UK provided no complications £30-£50 fee.
