A common mistake that is made by people who sing this song is the interpretation that the lyrics are sad. They're not! It is much more effective when the singer portrays the character as a sassy woman who doesn't feel like committing to anyone. If you know what the poem in this song means, think about it that way. :)
I used to sing this in an Italian restaurant- I would tell my customers it is about a slut having her fun with a poor boy. People like scandal. It was my most requested tune.
Italian teenage girls were often taught this song by mothers, partlyfor the sheer joy of singing but also because the words contain a kind of advice or message for young teens as they approach womanhood, courting, love etc and men paying attention to them. The message, basically, is that you don't have to love a young man simply because he fancies you. Justbecause you happen to like one particular beautiful male flower doesn't mean you have to dismiss all the rest of the masculine flowers... It's actually a female flirtatious song, with a bit of a cruel sting in it, warning young suitors to beware because the girl singing this song, in the first person, is desired by many and so she is under no obligation to love you in return, just because you have feelings for her. Actually, it is subtly derogatory because she is singing her song to a young shepherd who is in love with herand basicay saying that, if he thinks sheshould love him back, simply because he loves her, then he must be a very gullible fool, an absolute sucker for pain and emotional misery and she feels sorry for him. Italian society has no need for finism because, even when this old song was composed, it was a very matriarchal society, where women call the shots inlove, but the guys can always try their luck and, maybe, someone might accept them as their lover. But, I suspect thelady inthis song was hoping to do better than a humble shepherd, for a suitor.... Maybe she was a gold digger? But most likely, just young and flitatious and wanting to sample love's smorgasbord of suitors.
@@rainashay It would be great for a flirty pretty female who could put on all the flirty airs and graces.... Preferably blonde and sexy, showing a bit of cleavage, with long skirt, heaps of frills and lace and waving a fan... The kind a woman holds in her hand, not her fanny, though...

I do indeed hope you get your freedom friend. Maybe one day it won't be like this. Oppressive and destructive. Maybe one day freedom will be everywhere.
my classmate and i share a vocal coach; i’m a soprano and she’s a mezzo. she’s going to sing this for her abrsm g8 exam, and i heard her sing this today and fell in love with the song; it’s so beautiful.
I sang this for a performance in high school. I am 54 years old now and it's funny how I still remain the lyrics. Beautiful song. I wish I could go back for just a moment. This really takes me back. ❤
I started singing classes (clasical) and my teacher told me this will be my first aria :D this is a very bautiful song, and Cecilia Bartoli is an amazing soprano!
My mother has a cd with this track on it and I remember setting the table while she was preparing dinner if we had guests over. I’d feel like a little ballerina setting the table and I feel I’ll always have beautiful memories listening to this song
WOW! I had this song in my head today and had to look it up. So glad I did. It was one of my assigned pieces whne I was a vocal student '(85-'89) Internet access is so much better than having to sit in the music dept library and listen to a vinyl album. Good times :-)
I'm learning this with my vocal coach as an introduction to classical. I definitely don't sound as beautiful as Cecilia Bartoli but I'm getting there!!

These amazements are precious and fleeting. Cecilia has been the best new soprano ever since the '90's. She has been the voice of a gorgeous farfalla, He skill set has brought tears and wellings to heaven in the very fibers of millions of we mortals. We can express our gratitude; we can never express our profound appreciation that she has come forth to share this amazing voice.

without doubt my absolute favorite of Cecilia Bartoli. The CD where this track is listed on is also my number 1, 2, and 3 of Bartoli. The other CD's are great, really great, but this one jumps out (for me, personally) so high.... It can get me to tears nearly everytime I listen to it.
A music teacher of mine many moons ago told me that a great singer doesn't make things happen, they let them happen. A great singer will always make it look easy!
This was my audition song for Districit Choir a couple years ago. Such a pretty song!! I might be the weirdest 18 year old ever cuz I'm from Missouri and I'm in love with opera and ballet :)
I love this song and am learning it as I am a mezzo sop but can hit the high G rarely used in music, which could be used in a beautiful cadenza in this song. Love cecilia
I wish she wouldn't close her eyes when she sings. Gorgeous artist. A simple pure song made complex and then simple again. Not easy to do, especially for someone who sings much more complicated songs most of the time.
I love singing this song. Cecilia was my inspiration, as soon as I heard it I had to sing it! I love singing opera and this i believe might be my favorite :)

heyhaila09, I'm also learning this song with my voice teacher. I'm so nervous because I'm learning this song as one of my three songs I must perform for an audition to CALARTS, the private performing arts university in Valencia, California. As you said, Cecilia is brilliant as a colortura soprano and I hope I can sing as she does too. She sings with such expression and grace that I wish I can sing as carefree as she does.
