Old NFL players were just awesome! They were just dude’s. They lived in the city they played for and rarely left. How many times as a kid shopping with my parents we’d run into Bills players back in the Super Bowl years. Hell, Darryl Talley flew me like an airplane around Kmart back in ‘86!
I met Lyle in the Denver airport a long time ago. He was still playing for Oakland at the time. He was going to South Dakota to visit some friends. Nice guy.
So true Howie and I for myself will never forget that. Remember Lyle Alzado throwing Jacoby around like a wet piece of spaghetti in the 1984 Super Bowl. Was a thing to behold, I go back further though. I watched the 1970’s Raiders, Ken Sabler, Fred Biletnikoff, Cliff Branch, the rest but Couch Madden was as entertaining as the Raiders were, watching run to the ref, out of bounds, waving his arms like ,…. Was great!!! Thank you for your years, and for putting up with Bradshaw who was disliked by Oakland fans as much or more than the Redskins in your era
Greatest story - I’m a bell boy at Hyatt Regency SFO airport. Washington Redskins are staying there to play 49ers. Dexter Manley, Defensive tackle, comes down to Bell stand and says hey can you get me a cab & throws me a $20(this is 1991). I said Mr. Manley, the team bus is around the side of hotel to take Redskins to Candlestick park. Dexter Manley turns to me, laughs out loud and says “I don’t travel with those losers”. I was like WOW!!
There are so many stadiums that you could still do this at. Oakland would not be on that list, but you would not have any issues at Green Bay, Indianapolis, Buffalo, and probably many others.
This reminds me of a story about the original dream team being stuck on the bus at the Olympics. They all wanted to get off and walk to hotel since it was close but they knew they would get mobbed if they did. Except John Stockton he looks like your average everyday guy. So he got off and walked back with no one even noticing while the rest of the team was stuck on the bus.
I'm taking it the cab driver didn't drive up on the curb as Lyle asked him to,,,,, I wonder what happened to the cab driver, he hasn't been seen since then,,,, LYLE!
back in the early 2000's I would go to a restaurant for buffalo wings in MD and would sometimes run into John Ogdan and Terrell Suggs. At least in Baltimore I think currant players are still part of the community.
I worked Burger King in a DFW suburb 10pm-3am in high school. It was the only fast food open for miles, & it was close enough to Colleyville where a lot of Dallas Cowboys lived. Larry Cole came in the drive thru once in awhile, & others i didnt know. But you know that monster Super Bowl ring they are wearing along with being exceptionally big. They were regular people doing regular things in ordinary pickups. Its kind of a shock to see someone you have only seen on TV face to face as a teen & it be ordinary.
I saw Lyle and the two other linemen in Denver I'm looking in this subcompact car that these guys are in watch them exit car i asked them how they got inthere
Lyle Alzado was a big deal in Denver - they had the Ali fight at Mile High stadium and they had a good turnout from what I remember. Then he goes to the Raiders...
True story... I worked at a hotel where visiting football teams stayed when they played our home team... dude loses his wallet with his entire life inside it, platinum cards I.D. everything... I call the State Police to ensure he got his wallet back, they returned his wallet and life to him just before the game... MFer didn't even say thank you.
Ive Watch alot old videos from the 70's, of NHL & MLB, and after the game youd see them smoking cigarettes. Alot if not all of the professionals athletes from the 1970's and earlier had part-time jobs in the off-season. Just regular dudes
In 1984, the Washington symbol was the profile of a proud Blackfoot chief, a warrior that men would strive hard to represent properly on the gridiron, not the lame, woke W that might as well stand for Weak.

Yup. Then Feminine entitled lazy blacks ruined it
I used to play football with Oakland Raider players when I was a kid. No big deal except blocking Ben Davidson
GOD BLESS YOU BROTHER GREAT STORY
Howie is a class act
I met Lyle in the Denver airport a long time ago. He was still playing for Oakland at the time. He was going to South Dakota to visit some friends. Nice guy.
He loved Denver....he had a place near Bonne Brae U- Hills area .... think he was always a Bronco at heart
I wonder how many players visit friends in South Dakota now
Larry Bird used to go out drinking in boston in the 80s it was a rough place then .

Redskins fan and I recall Stabler was nicknamed "The Snake", at least by my Dad and his Army buddies.

LYLE ALZADO WAS A MONSTER
Steroids.
I SAW LYLE in Los Angeles at a mall. He walked angry. He was huge. He was cocky with an attitude.
I'm taking it the cab driver didn't drive up on the curb as Lyle asked him to,,,,, I wonder what happened to the cab driver, he hasn't been seen since then,,,, LYLE!
Well depending where he was if he was on Dale Mabry definitely wasn't going to drive up on that curb and that sidewalk
I remember Lyle’s sitcom back in the day
that was Bob Golic
@ Bob Golic was on Saved by the bell college years ago. Lyle had his own sitcom called “Learning the ropes”

Jules could walk through the stadium if he kept his head down, they think is a fan if they noticed Jewls they give him a hug

For those that don't know Lyle Alzado, he was violent on the field. He hurt people.

Idk I feel some type of way this dude wearing a Al shirt with a patriot snap back
Pretty soon players will demand their own helicopter parking lot.
