  • Designed by James McConnell for the Southern Division of the London & North Western Railway - the self-proclaimed 'Premier Line' - in 1851, the "Bloomer" class locomotive proved to be fast, reliable and long-lived with the last one being scrapped in 1888. Yet, there are hopes for a re-birth with a much-anticipated new build Bloomer finally coming together near Birmingham.

We can finally see a Bloomer steam! The fact that an engine no one alive has seen move under it's own power is being rebuilt amazes me!

I’d heard about the stalled bloomer build but didn’t know it had reached such an advanced stage. Very impressive to get so far in four years.

As a lifelong Wolvertonian I was really excited to see this one. My dad pulled the “Wolverton” replica into the carriage shed with his forklift when it was moved from the train station for restoration. Ironically enough the replica is now on display at the entrance to McConnell Drive.

As a former Wolverton resident ( and went to the Radcliffe school) it's nice to see something on TH-cam about the bloomers. As an apprentice I worked on parts of the replica.

The cabs were added later when Webb took control of L&NWR. Would love to see a replica running on the rails.

I was lucky to see the McConnell 0-4-2 in Sydney in 2019, and took lots of pictures!

Fantastic you are donating to the Bloomer project with monetized funds! That is much appreciated! That gives me a second reason to watch besides how much side info you bring to each of these locomotive histories. I was well aware of bloomer but not all these extra details nor a LNWR designed loco in Australia. Great job👍

This was also the last loco to be designed and (in some cases) built at Wolverton. The LNWR subsequently centralised loco design and production in Crewe with Wolverton going over to carriage production and loco maintenance.

I love that huge wheel they put on some British locomotives. Wish they could rebuild one of those types like they did the tornado.

A similar engine to this is the 1870 Stirling 8 ft single locomotive . This Stirling seems remarkable and worthy of a video because it cost only about 2000 pounds in Victorian money and you can buy a Dapol or Kitmaster model kit of it ! the Stirling had an amazing long service life !

  • @unconventionalideas5683

    Amen to the replica!
