I started playing this about 3 weeks ago and am absolutely loving it! There's so much to learn about and master. On my first game I didn't have a clue what to do and although the combat was going well, I didn't build enough satellites; built the wrong things at the wrong times and lost several countries from the council which had a knock-on effect. My second playthrough was much better. My tips for players: 1) Prioritise building satellites and satellite uplinks. They are your income and one of the main ways of controlling panic levels of the council countries. Factor in the build times and time it so that you can launch by the end of the month. 2) Don't worry about scientists and laboratories, your main focus should be workshops and engineers as they enable you to build things (including satellites; uplinks; armour; weapons etc). The only benefit of scientists is that you complete research quicker. 3) Launch satellites a close to the end of the month. Countries only leave the council at the very end, so if you launch satellites late, you will have a better judge of what is most pressing. Even if a country goes onto 5 stars for panic on the 1st of a month, it won't leave until the end of the month. 4) Keep a close eye on the date and keep checking your schedule of upcoming events, which includes the council report (end of the month). 5) Use overwatch in combat - it basically grants you an extra shot when enemies come into range. 6) On harder difficulties, wherever possible prioritise full-cover over half-cover - it makes a big difference. On lower difficulties you get away with half-cover, but harder modes are a lot less forgiving. 7) Unless absolutely necessary, always refrain from dashing beyond the blue boundary when moving. You can move the same distance across two short moves anyway. This allow you to scout, and if you reveal large enemy forces, you will have an option of retreating; firing; overwatch etc.
bleedingpepper A few more tips: 8) The game's shot accuracy/probability system is fixed in a sense if you reload a save file and do exactly as you did previously, you will get the same outcome. What can change the shot outcome, is if you do things in a different order or swap targets between different soldiers. 9) When the enemy approach and uncover you after your round of moves has ended, you will have a full round to respond before they get a chance to move. However if you approach and uncover them, you will only have until the end of that round before they get to move. It's best on harder difficulties that you lead with one soldier and never move further forward than the first soldier. That way you should (in theory) only trigger enemy groups using your first soldier, and have the rest of your squad's moves for that round to respond to the threat before the enemy gets a go (trust me, classic and impossible mode can be extremely unforgiving if your 5th or 6th soldier triggers an enemy event and you don't have enough moves to deal with the threat). 10) Bearing in mind (9) above, Squad Sight (sniper perk) is very useful as you can position them out of range of the enemy group, and on the next round of moves move a non-sniper to trigger the enemy event, then switch to the snipers to hit them. In The Zone or Double Tap can allow snipers to get multiple kills. 11) In relation to (10) above, think about how the rest of the squad can line up kills for snipers. Use explosives to destroy cover or soften the enemy up if the snipers have In The Zone as this relies on the targets being out of cover; and the shot resulting in a kill (I've killed 5-6 enemies in a single turn using a sniper's In The Zone perk). Using a heavy's Holo-Targeting can also enhance accuracy even if the heavy misses their shot. Bearing this in mind, a sniper with In The Zone should move last (to clear up wounded and exposed enemies while those with Double Tap can move earlier to damage enemies and allow lower ranked soldiers a chance to get kills and EXP (as In The Zone/Double Tap are Colonel skills, there is no EXP benefit for the sniper at this point).
@@bleedingpepper ive never used in the zone only time enemys arnt in cover is the damn spiders or zombies. My squads are a support with medic perks A assault with cqc perks and a shotty A heavy with holo target shredder rockets Then either 2 snipers n a shiv or 3 snipers 80% of my kills are snipers lol
Here's just another tip, If a sectoid uses that mind control on another sectoid if you kill the sectoid using the mind control it will kill the the other sectoid, i know it sounds crazy but it's true I've done many times saved me a lot of turns and moves.
This guide is old, but in early 2021 I decided to finally start with X-Com. This guide was superb for beginners, since I don't want to know everything in a tutorial, just the core elements of the game. I'm gonna play this game in my native language first, I hope the voice acting isn't too much messed up, but I feel like for my first run it doesn't hurt to not be forced to google translate some sci fi related words. So now thx to this sweet guide I feel I'm ready to go, this is certainly a game I'll play multiple runs and in two languages. Hyped for old game in 2021
S. MacLean You could also save your game during missions so when you make a mistake you can just go back to it instead of jeprodizing the mission overall.
Rule #1: Do not advance on the map and risk exposing new enemies when already in a fight. Rule #2: Set up overwatch traps (concealed is safer) whenever possible.
maybe not relevant to y'all anymore, but you can ignore meld for a good chunk of the initial campaign. You won't have the facilities available to use it until later anyhow- grab what you can get safely, and leave what you can't. A high-rank soldier with a full set of abilities is worth so much more than any upgrades Meld unlocks.
As someone who loves alien folklore I can’t believe I slept on this game for so long. The only tactics game I played was fire emblem before this and I liked it but I didn’t like how you had to move like 10 people every turn this game keeps it’s simple it’s awesome

Twice I have had the same issue with Mutons. No one can hit them. The first time I ever encountered them, they slaughtered my team. Two severely wounded soldiers made it out when I ran back to the extraction and aborted. The second time, after starting over, my team was much more powerful and I slaughtered the Mutons the first two times I encountered them with this new team. Then the third time I encountered them, none of my team could hit them. while they systematically destroyed the cover and killed my soldiers one by one. The only thing I can think is that "blood call" must reduce your will and aim to zero for next 5 turns or something. I'm about to start over a third time and see how that goes.
I never understood people that get mad when they take a 90% shot and miss. That's still a 10% chance you'RE going to miss the shot. The game isn't cheating against you. Old, but from reading the stuff here, and from watching the video. 1. I need to take my time. From the other tactical games I played, I’m used to trying to maximize damage as quick as possible to minimize the chances of the enemy to hurt me. Doesn’t work here. 2. Base management. I appear to have not prioritized very well. I figured this out when 2 months in I still didn’t have a third satellite and no real means to dissuade the panic because I’d just messed up and thrown away a pretty well developed squad. 3. Research isn’t too important, but the engineers are. Which, judging by the importance of my armor, is probably true. 4. Reactive shots. I should be using them much more. 5. Really prioritize full cover. This should make my next run a little easier.

Watching this in 2023, found out about XCOM on my phone in 2020 and it’s definitely the best game on the iPhone (except for XCOM 2). I can’t believe how good this game is!!!
Total newb to XCOM, and it's about time I git gud!! I've played through 3 missions now before seeing this video, and now I'm ready to get back in and train my soldiers! and be patient! ha. Thanks so much for these tips.
What really is great is that despite the console version running relatively poorly compared to the PC (if you have an average PC) it still has a very excellent gamepad control scheme which is just faster than doing the same thing on PC with keyboard and mouse.
1) Xcom is like Pokemon: Sure, you can rank up someone with poor aim (below 70~65), and poor will (below 50), but they will get your units killed, and they will take longer to rank up and be useful. The exception is the Heavy: with Shredder, Holo-targeting, Grenadier, and tactical rigging, grenade and rocket spam will save the world, and them from dismissal. Why do you think, after a fully upgraded squad, you're only allowed 6? 2) Cover is better than no cover, but line of sight and distance is Key. Ranged attacks, including most psionic attacks, requires sight, and melee attackers need to close the distance, and while they often can go far in one turn, they will take two actions and forego attacking until the next turn, leaving them exposed. 3) Overwatch only activates when an enemy moves in a units line of sight. If they stop moving after entering sight, or they don't move within sight, they won't trigger overwatch. This goes both ways. 4) XCOM's RNG can cause perfect shots to go wild, there is no shame for using an entire turn to kill a single enemy.
this is a great introduction to xcom thanks. just a question is it worth the risk to push faster on meld missions it seems like the game wants you to choose between losing someone to get meld or live with no meld.
Hey Tony, great vids. I would like to see you take on one of the harder enemies...my biggest peev is having to fight those two legged robot-alien-things with the two drones that heal it and the beam weapon that K.O.'s anyone in open space. Those are annoying because you need an entire squad to kill it because they spawn in such odd and random spots. Any tips for fighting that enemy?
My tip is to use a decoy and then focus all fire on it. Also the MEC unit can eventually get a emp so that can help. One other tip is get a sniper with wepon disable to knock out its weapons
Hi, - When is 100% cover enemy can't shoot you or he has small chance for it and can't destroy cover? - When some country withdraw from x-com project do is most priority to launch satellite there? - How to set-up my team with 6 solders? How much to have
Just got this game and all the DLC for Enemy Unknown for 80% off on Steam. Thanks for these helpful tips as I wait for it to download, I also have xcom 2 on wish list. Crushed disks in lower back so I have to hit the sales to stretch things... oh yeah and I subscribed brother!
yeah and my snipers and others even miss the shot at 70% and higher ^^ so the shot at 3:50 will be missed by mine sniper for sure... :-/ maybe difficulty level is a factor there? (playing on the third diff level)
Just started playing this today, got about 3 hours into the campaign and realized I'd totally screwed up. Had no money, no satellites, Japan and Australia were about to pull out, and barely any good soldiers. Whoops.
I always loose 1-2 Countires early aswell, for no money, use the grey maket well and about the lack of soldiers, if your not to unlucky just slow down the game as much as you can, rather move 2spaces into a full cover than dash to half cover just because you want to kill the enemy
Sam Vimes The same thing happened to me on my first go as well as I had not played anything from the XCOM franchise before. My combat was fine, but all my base management stuff was poor. Satellites are a massive priority to begin with. I'm on my classic mode playthrough now and am approaching the last mission and I've still got all 16 council countries. I don't know how much of this was down to luck, but it's definitely possible once you work out the mechanics of the game and what to prioritise.
mate how do u have the cap, bandanna & goggles i dont have it.............pls reply cause yr squad was looking very cool! with those cool stuff on!!!!!!
Xenonauts is probably my first and best recommendation. Shares a lot with the Xcom franchise and is all in all a fantastic experience. Keep an eye on Phoenix Point as well. It's still in development but it's being created by Julian Gollop the creator of the original Xcom. It's his personal take on a reboot of OG Xcom. Outside of that Into the Breach is more of a roguelike take on the turn based strategy but a lot of fun and recently Battletech launched on PC if you're looking for some hardcore deep Mech turn based strategy with an epic story and a lot of depth. Welcome to PC gaming dude! Have fun!
I played Xcom last night and my support had a shotgun, cause me like an idiot didn't check their gear, he couldn't kill an Alien that was probably 10-15 feet away but later in the match he was able to shoot and kill one that was like 30 feet away Lol.
***** I would recommend the Squad Sight perk over Snap Shot to be honest (although I would say it's useful to have one sniper with Snap Shot for indoor/urban maps). I use to choose Snap Shot, but Squad Sight coupled with In The Zone (which allows you to take unlimited consecutive shots as long as you kill enemies outside of cover - so until you run out of targets; need to reload or fail to land a kill-shot) and higher ground is incredible. It's an absolute life saver on harder difficulties as you can take out entire groups of uncovered enemies in a single go (you may need to soften them up a bit or use explosives to take out their cover first). On open maps you won't even have to move much with Squad Sight, and even on some urban maps you can easily blow away cover or holes in buildings to create clear firing lines.
@@bleedingpepper The secret to In The Zone is, enemies that can't take cover or Floaters in flight count for it. It makes the Sniper an insane panic button, especially against Chryssalids.
i got the PC version and do you think the comfort of a controller outweighs the functionality of mouse and keyboard ? i would really rather play with a controller. Yes the video is a bit old but maybe you can still answer me on that one :) Cheers.
+Syn Brainstorm Of course I can answer! I played both the console version and the pc version with a Xbox 360 controller and the game performs flawlessly. It is purely preference. I found neither to be more efficient than the other, but as you said the controller has the comfort advantage and I especially enjoyed that in a game like this.
+Tony Mo Yeah for everything that isnt a FPS game i also prefer controller. But you know strategygames usually play better with M&K. Then again this game has also a console version so it just makes sense. Alright will use controller then :) Thanks!
+Syn Brainstorm I played originally using mouse, then 360 controller on PC. I found controller easier in that mouse and clicking on some of those weird corners you may accidentally click just out of cover or around a corner that now makes him flanked instead of full cover
+Ahmed Sayed its a skill in their skill tree that lets then move then take a shot or go into overwatch with the sniper for like a 20 point hit to your accuracy
Ahmed Sayed ya snapshot really sucks when compared to squad sight as you can archangel sniper to pretty much decimate everything especially melee aliens
No mention of "hunker down" "overwatch" etc.. what do the alien red skulls when you move close to them mean? Are you kidding me? This is a orrible guide.
Hunker down is a move that increases your chances of not getting hit. Generally favoured over overwatch when enemies have line of sight in you, since overwatch only activates upon movement but not them shooting you standing still. Overwatch is ability that causes you to shoot at enemies that move in your line of sight even if it is not your turn. Generally you want to be using this alot. For people who are curious

When the fourth video is still on a game you have no idea about but the youtuber knows everything about it
Man this was a long time ago compared to now, seeing you play TitanFall 2 is really different from this game
4:44 well a couple days ago one of my troops got melted through full cover for 6 damage
this is a great introduction to xcom thanks. just a question is it worth the risk to push faster on meld missions it seems like the game wants you to choose between losing someone to get meld or live with no meld.
Why on earth have you taken Snap Shot for the sniper over Squad Sight? Squad is the best ability the Sniper can have..
Any tips for fighting that enemy?
you mean mechtoid or sectopods ?
Prob secto
My tip is to use a decoy and then focus all fire on it. Also the MEC unit can eventually get a emp so that can help. One other tip is get a sniper with wepon disable to knock out its weapons
Remember no retreat not even a step back fire at the enemies especially if there a sectoid connect to each other kill them.
Good tips and reminders. Thank you.
Hi,
- When is 100% cover enemy can't shoot you or he has small chance for it and can't destroy cover?
- When some country withdraw from x-com project do is most priority to launch satellite there?
- How to set-up my team with 6 solders? How much to have
Just got this game and all the DLC for Enemy Unknown for 80% off on Steam. Thanks for these helpful tips as I wait for it to download, I also have xcom 2 on wish list. Crushed disks in lower back so I have to hit the sales to stretch things... oh yeah and I subscribed brother!
Appreciate that dude. Heal up and enjoy Xcom!
Scope's are a necessity
Great video! Thank you for the effort!
One question... how do you get the ability to change armor colors and such? It is not available in my game.
I know I am very late but, Click on the character in the barracks and hit the edit button you should get the option there
@@leifjbj thank you kind sir!
Glad I could help.
Hey thanks man the two videos were very helpful!
With this skill of play did you ever win on Ironman impossible?
The video that made me find your youtube channel. Was having trouble found your video and it helped. Have you played Xcom: Declassified? Any thoughts?
VenomKpp Not a good xcom game.
Cheers for the tips.
the stratagy i use works very well for me but i always hear people saying that my start sucks.
As long as it works for you that's all that matters really.
yeah and my snipers and others even miss the shot at 70% and higher ^^ so the shot at 3:50 will be missed by mine sniper for sure...
How did you get the different colors of armor and the hats?!?!
What I did was research weapons then armor then stuff in the foundry
@3:40 You moved and shot with the sniper in the same turn? Are you using some kind of mod?
I think it was the Snap Shot ability
@@ulrichbrito Yeah, you're probably right. I always choose squadsight so I never thought about that.
Snap Shot. In the base game, Squadsight is just plain better, though, so can't blame you.
Great vid! Thanks for the tips*****
Great tips, thanks!
Good video bro... thanks for the help :)
mate how do u have the cap, bandanna & goggles i dont have it.............pls reply cause yr squad was looking very cool! with those cool stuff on!!!!!!
I believe it was part of a pre-order bonus way back in the day. It should be available as a separate DLC purchase for a couple dollars now.
THANKS FOR THE IMMEDIATE REPLY , KEEP THE COOL VIDEOS COMIN
They are all included in the "enemy within" version/expansion, as well as a ton of other new stuff like missions, enemies, mechs etc.
thanks a bunch!!!
I'm sort of new to pc gaming. Xcom is such a great game. Can you recommend other games similar to this?
Have fun!
Thanks for getting back to me. Excited to check out those games you recommended.
Mutant Year Zero Road to Eden is great too.
I miss at 80 percent hit chance.... then later i kill an enemy with a 20 percent hit chance.
That's XCOM baby!
I played Xcom last night and my support had a shotgun, cause me like an idiot didn't check their gear, he couldn't kill an Alien that was probably 10-15 feet away but later in the match he was able to shoot and kill one that was like 30 feet away Lol.
+Scott Mattis lel
@@thesarcasticninjaja8835 it's like two years ago but whatever. How is your Support equipping a shotgun? I thought that's an Assault specific weapon
I save & load the game during combat like 10 times per battle. It's really boring, I think I fucked up my research priorities.
Nah, sorry, I like pussy too much to do that.
+BaSkA ^ OWWW SNAP
U could just do the secret hero cheat just saying
+Rawegian game freeze will be your biggest enemy
that's the only way I can play the game because I started playing on classic in my first play through
how did you move and shoot with your sniper? Did they nerf them after this video? Would be cool if they could get a perk to let them move and shoot :/
***** It's one of the top tier abilities for the class.
@@bleedingpepper
The secret to In The Zone is, enemies that can't take cover or Floaters in flight count for it. It makes the Sniper an insane panic button, especially against Chryssalids.
How the hell were you able to move with your sniper and still shoot after ?
The second perk row for sniper class lets you choose this move and attack perk
Thanks helped alot!
heres a tip for you if your on pc try fraps better for recording videos :3
i got the PC version and do you think the comfort of a controller outweighs the functionality of mouse and keyboard ?
i would really rather play with a controller.
Yes the video is a bit old but maybe you can still answer me on that one :)
Cheers.
+themaster408 Yeah after i switched to the controller and got used to it, it felt way more comfortable.
I always run two snipers, one with each ability.
I run 3 all with the same perks. A support medic. A CQB assault and a heavy with holos and sherdders and heat.
Also, is it a bug or are units that have been hurt and healed by a medkit still supposed to be out of action for so many days after the mission?
Actual part of the game
Started playing Xcom again with modern gaming being a complete disappointment nowadays.
I don't then no this is early on cause u moved ur sniper and the shot with the snpier u can't do that early on
While I love this game it pisses me off so much especially the muton elites and muton bezerkers
Zombies spiders and cyber disk. Hate hate hate hate.
very good vídeo
I did actually, made a video on it, I'll send you a direct message with a link. Overall it was a disappointment lol.
I struggle in base management
"Craft your own strategies"
*Cheats*
Not if you are using a shotgun 36% is 100% hit.
Still got my squad killed lol
So after wasting 9 minutes and internet quota, the thing i got from watching this "Tip" is .... "Do whatever you feel good".... nice tip
The real strategy is map and enemy based, what you showed is not strategy at all, just the basics of combat.
Si juegas en normal
I thought snipers can't move and shoot
+Ahmed Sayed its a skill in their skill tree that lets then move then take a shot or go into overwatch with the sniper for like a 20 point hit to your accuracy
yeah i figured that out wen i went back on the game lol, i ony use squadsight tho. its OP
Ahmed Sayed ya snapshot really sucks when compared to squad sight as you can archangel sniper to pretty much decimate everything especially melee aliens
Meleeliens
I take it your done with xcom you haven't posted sense 2013
+Revan FIveOneNine Haha yea I really just did the noob tips series however I will be covering Xcom 2 and doing similar guides for the game
-Noob Tips- *New players/Beginners
Easy means 2 muttons on classic
I WANT THIS ON PS4. GUYS. PLEASE. MAKE THIS HAPPEN ON PS4!
PC MASTER RACE
XBOX1 has it now
while pc is certainly master race when it comes to xbox vs ps #xboxonewon
Liar. You never did an Enemy Within video.
The guy plays poorply, should watch some videos of strong players and learn. Those runnings in to enemy overwatch shots are crazy.
Then watch them and save your comments. Fairly straight forward.
if you were playing on a higher difficalty the enemies would just have flaked you in almost every move
I'm a kinda guy that likes a challenge so like a boat am gonna play xcom ew on a high difficulty on ironman mode without playing through it before :)
For people who are curious
the alien heads indicate how many aliens are in that soldier's line of sight, that should be obvious enough to figure out for yourself.
Combats the easiest part base buildings the worst
Here's a tip if 2 sectoids mind merge kill the one who is boosting the other they both die
