Solar panels need the most direct and uniform sunlight possible, so think of it as an expensive novelty item. It's the hat version of Solar Roadways (it promises and fails to deliver instead of providing a genuine favourable cost/benefit performance).
@@o0kaelasor, use it to trickle charge the power bank so you can use your phone unencumbered 👍 (maybe you’d get only 10%? but if you need a hat anyway…)
A great video for a youtuber that I really miss , since their videos are so polished. I usually get "Grade C" or "Grade B" laptops on weekends in some neighboors fairs on my city. Even though you need to have a 'lynx eye' to spot if the computer is worth it, and also you need to know a lot about notebooks and selling skills. With a little luck and persistence you can get bargains in the order U$SD 50-75. For south America, this is almost a gift.
I was sitting here thinking like...A solar hat? Then I thought slightly deeper and realized this is an ingenious idea. Australia has plenty of sun to spare, so why not catch it with your head, charge your phone and stay cool all at the same time.
I got a p51 Thinkpad a few months back. 64gb ram i7 7700hq Nvidia quadro 1200m all for 220usd because of a "missing battery" a quick trip to Amazon & 40$ later and I got myself a beast of a laptop.
Ended up grabbing a surface 4 laptop with 32gb of ram, 1tb storage, and an i7-1185g7 for about 220 USD because it was locked. Seemed to be tied to a business, but you could bypass the business login requirement using an older copy of windows 11 and some CMD prompt magic. Best deal I've ever gotten
It has the most common problem with modern ThinkPads like the missing track point nub and the broken USB-C Port, and I don't blame them blocking it off to prevent the buyer to plug it in and realize it's dead and make a return, lenovo should've did a modular port for the ThinkPads knowing how rough the people are with them
The missing nub is quite common on these machines. I recently scored old Lenovo Thinkpads L520 (I5-2520M - 4Gb RAM - 500Gb HDD) from my daughter's school because they replaced their computer park. On the 20 machines I had, only 2 still had the nub. Some has dead batteries (well, not that surprising on 12yo machines) and one has a faulty mainboard (none of the SATA ports were functionning) and was kept for parts. After upgrading to 8Gb and 240Gb SATA SSD, these are quite decent machines for text editing and net uses.
I actually purchased a 2018 Mac mini after finally saving for a while. Since I had wanted at the least i7 with 16 GBs of RAM, I reluctantly purchased a C condition one for around $280 USD when the norm is around $350 USD. It had some marring on the sides but overall, ended up looked pretty decent. Nice video to see on your experience with a C condition item.
Looks like you did pretty well for US $85 equivalent. I've always gotten my laptops from thrift stores, flea markets, estate sales, and yard sales, but now I'll think about eBay too.
yard sales are a better bet if you go to those often, I bought lots of modern computers for under 20 dollars at yardsales, I have never seen that kind of deal on ebay
Just scored some old laptops, tablets and phones. My latest edition is an iPhone 3G, Toshiba netbook, and LG netbook. I currnetly have a Dell Inspiron 1525, and an Acer E-machines netbook. I am saving them with Linux, I also have Samsung Galaxy S & Note phones, and 3 old Android tablets, & an iPad. What a collection! You inspire me to save old computers. Also, I should start using eucalyptus oil, I currently only use cleaning wipes to clean old laptops. :D
If you have to take the back off of any laptop for any reason, check to see if the fans are clogged. I had a bearing go out on one. The neighbor across the street has 2 big rig trucks. The noise was so loud I thought it was the trucks. Took the back off and the bad bearing fan had enough lint that it looked like the felt you sometimes see under a carpet. Same fans were used on both sides. A push/pull system. The other wasn't as bad but was far from perfect. Laptop was about 5 years old and I had been under the hood with a battery replacement and SSD upgrades in the past. Never checked the fans.
That solar hat has to be the Most Nathan Product to ever sponsor you. Some might think it's weird, but it is honestly the most authentic spon in history.
It's amazing that laptop was considered "C grade" I watched this video, and am currently typing this message on my 2010 MacBook Pro. Man, the issues this thing had/has, and it's still chugging on. - Battery replaced twice - HDD failed/replaced with a SSD -OG 4gb ram died, replaced/upgraded to 8gb - DVD drive reads DVD's but no longer burns DVD's - Memory card reader no longer reads anything - Speakers are weak as hell now, I use bluetooth to an external speaker But this ol girl scrolls social media just fine, watches youtube just fine, and produces documents and emails just fine. If I dare use Final Cut Pro to edit any sort of footage these days.....boy I better be ready to sit and wait for a day for it to render LOL
The problem with buying a C grade laptop is your mileage may vary, a lot. I think you were very lucky to get a good C grade. I took the punt and bought an A grade HP Elitebook 840 G5 for $365 from Australian Computer Traders on their ebay store when ebay had $60 off. Its spotless and an absolute ripper!
I'd be really glad to get this device for that price. Not quite your dream main computer (battery, mediocre panel), but the value is awesome! I wouldn't mind to daily drive it.
The non upgradeable ram is probably less about costs and more about both chassis thickness and even more important signal integrity for ram. If not to enable higher ram frequency then maybe for easier mainboard layout design
Thinkpads are amazing, and you mentioned the memory being soldered to the mb, my t440 has soldered 4Gb but has another empty slot under the keyboard so it has 12gb in all. Did you have a look yourself?
The USB-C ports not working is a usual thing for these, sadly. Its not a dummy, its just been rendered inoperable. As for the covered crack, its actually a known and identified issue that Lenovo has covered under regular standard warranty (Tip HT514313). That battery screw always comes undone, too. That LCD is the low end one, too. They offer them up to 99% SRGB at 400 nits for this model.
There was an issue with the USB-C firmware for a lot of lenovo laptops for a while that caused them to burn out the chip while charging. so that port isn't a dummy, but it probably died before the firmware could be updated correctly. It takes soldering a new chip to fix it. Make sure you update the USB-C firmware, or the same thing will happen to the charging port you're using. This is a known issue with lenovo laptops.
That charging usb a port can be found elsewhere, my few dells have it though it's not advertised on the machine, it's just in the bios to turn it off and on
I can only assume that they bought a pallete of these and the put all the good parts in the good laptops, until they couldn't do that anymore and you get these C grade.
I bought a c grade iPad Pro from a company in the UK called CEX and I’m always amazed by the quality. I think it was grade C as it didn’t come in the original box 👍 also a lot cheaper than eBay too 🎉
Dell latitude E6430 Will share power over the usb ports while powered off, so long as the usb powershare option is enabled in the bios. Trust me I own 6 0f them.
Just bought a ThinkPad T14s grade C laptop about a month ago. It has typical wear marks, but other than that you can't tell it's a grade C unit. As with your laptop. it has 8GB of soldered RAM.

I still use my Thinkpad Edge E431 that I bought when going for Uni. I bought it new but travelled with it all over. That machine is a tank and if I needed a laptop to travel some more I'd just upgrade the wifi card to new model and replaced worn out battery which is user replacable. I just need to pull two latches and the battery is out. This Thinkpad however seems like it's much lower quality than the ones I've seen. Thinkpads overall went down in quality which is unfortunate.

The real reasons for this beeing so cheap are as follows by importance: One dead USB-C port (its repairable/replacable tho, and its the easier of the 2 to do), non upgradable RAM - i have seen new laptops ThinkPads with i7 1355u beeing sold for 1/2-3/4 off because they come with 8GB of soldered ram, and lastly the condition - its not bad but does lower the price.
If you plan on using it with a dock most of the time I don't see why you would care what grade it is. That being said I bought an A grade Thinkpad only to find out one of the main USB-C port is fidgety (power is good but docking functionality is not stable). So just like your model.
