Well, haha, as an at home mom, I have to say ... "I am a teacher, chef, doctor, personal shopper, gardener, etc..." And the list goes on and on.... Thank you so much for watching and enjoying!
The parsley is cut parsley, so I had to keep changing it out. Also, those little rascals would not fall into the water. They hang on tight and are actually very difficult to pull off. :)) Hopefully, you will "grow" some pretty butterflies too! :))
I get giant swallowtail eggs and caterpillars from my lime tree and raise them inside. The predator population has grown so much in the past few years; I never see large caterpillars outside anymore! One danger, that I learned the hard way, was putting the cuttings in an open vase. The 'pillars fall off the leaves occasionally and drown. Now I put plastic wrap over the container top and poke holes in it for the stems! No fatalities since! Fun video! Thanks!
Please do point out that they need several hours to pump blood through their wings for the windgs to become study enough to fly...I live in Florida, and our anoles (aka lizards) will come by & eat them in a second if they can't fly yet...
A swallowtail dive bombed me yesterday and then laid some eggs upon my carrots. I only found three of the eggs, but I brought them in and have some parsley plants on their way to me. I’m so excited! Loved watching your caterpillars in action :)
Oh, I just replaced the "munchedon" parsley with fresh parsley. It is in a vase with water so it stays fresh until it needs to be replaced again. The container (which previously had spinach in it) had a bumpy bottom and I was afraid the vase might tip over, so I leveled it with cardboard (top of an egg carton worked for me). Hope this helps. :)
Tks for the show, it was great to watch, I have quite a few on my parley plant and will try your method of raising them from catapillars to butterflys...
I understand they need time for their wings to really dry well before they can fly. FYI they especially love curley parsley. Absolutely wonderful video. Thank you! 🐛🐛🐛🦋🦋🦋
I've never witnessed this before. You did such a nice job. Watched the receipts vid too. Amazing what folks think of to share of real effects of life. Thank you for the excellent sharing.
Hi there, I am new at raising Caterpillars to butterflies. I just started at the beginning of August of this year. I started out with Monarchs and so far have raised and released 25 Monarch Butterflies. I then started collecting Black Swallowtail caterpillars. I have two that formed into their Chrysalis back in late August and hoping they emerge pretty soon. I need some advice, since Fall is only a couple weeks away. I have 10 Black Swallowtail Caterpillars that are basically just now going into their Chrysalis. They started forming their Chrysalis On September first. Do you think they’ll emerge into a butterfly before October, or am I gonna need to overwinter them? I honestly don’t want to stress with over wintering them. I’m not interested in overwintering them this year at least. Yet I do not want to kill them either? What should I do? I have 3 remaining Black Swallowtail Caterpillars left . Should I take them back outside and just wish them luck? I don’t know what to do? Any kind of advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.
Awesome video!! When that Butterfly took off finally~~I smiled also. Wondeful that ya'll could experience this & you enabled us to ex[erience it also. Thanks. They are Beautiful Butterflies!! Not sure if I have ever seen one of these kind.
Sorry for all the comments but I love this video so much🙌🏻 I love that you didn’t kill the caterpillar and also that you knew so much about it and taught everyone how to do it! We used to do this to us kids and I forgot about it and I forgot those caterpillars turned into such beautiful butterflies! I just ordered some parsley so if I get any of them I’ll be doing the same thing. I liked watching the butterfly get up the strength and courage, and then FINALLY making his first flight.... and then that you went & picked it up was cute too. 😍✌🏼
Great idea! I plant extra parsley and dill for the caterpillars every year now that I know what they are. Maybe I'll try bringing some of them inside this year because we usually miss seeing them hatch.
I have about 15 swallows butterfly catepillar hanging out in my dill! I am so excited to watch the metamorphosis. Thanks for the video, it was very informative.
Pretty Awesome ,,, Would be cool to have that setup in an elementary school class Ive got milkweed for the monarchs and today I planted dill and parsley for the swallowtails , also put a few in half barrels in case the rabbits eat the ones on the ground.. Love your channel
A bunch of these caterpillars were eating parsley I had growing in a big container. There were nine but a big frog came and ate all of them but ONE. There was a big frog in the container and all the caterpillars were gone but one so I'm guessing it ate them. I evicted the frog and last night the last caterpillar went into a chrysalis. I'm going to keep an eye on it and help make sure it gets to be a butterfly. I LOVE THIS VIDEO!!
Amazing video! When I was young I used to grow butterflies, especially forest species (here we don't have nice caterpillars on a parsley ;)). I remember my first, it was a brimstone and I was amazed how something like little green larva can change into beautiful butterfly.
Great question, however, I am unsure. They also like dill. Here are a couple more videos on swallowtails: th-cam.com/video/c6iznsBRfkA/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/c6iznsBRfkA/w-d-xo.html
RG - tell me about the vase with the parsley. I've got 3 now and have them on a plant but they've munched all the food off so I'm just laying the new food on top of the dirt. I could get a vase together but I couldn't quite tell what you had done. Thank you, Pam
I didn't realize the predators would take them: I had seven doing well on my parsley in the garden and then suddenly: they were ALL GONE. Could have been birds, skunks, not sure whatever else it could have been. Next time I'll cover their area in netting or perhaps bring the inside. I hope there is a next time:(
It most likely was birds. They will even eat them in the chrysalis stage. Netting or these plastic container or Amazon sells "butterfly houses" for as cheap as $12. Good luck1👍
What are the predators to caterpillars? I have been raising them in my greenhouse but they seem to disappear sometimes. (Not always). But I still don’t know whT is getting 5em because they should be protected
Does the parsley in the vase have its own roots? Do you block it just in case the cats fall down in the water? I've got 4 anise swallowtails on a fennel plant, however, I've got wasps nearby. I am going to try to rescue them before they get prayed upon by the wasps.
I'm happy I found this video, always enjoy your videos.I just found them on my carrots leaves in my bucket garden( I grow in 5gallon bucket). Is it safe to let them do all their cycle outside on the carrots leaves? And is my vegetables garden safe with them? Please help! Thank you
They will eat your carrot tops, and it is possible a bird will eat the worms. You might want to bring them in and feed them parsley, carrot tops, or dill. It does not take them long to turn into a butterfly.
I have an ugly giant swallowtail eating up my orange tree leaves. Ugly pieces of bird crap. Can't wait for them to become chrysali. I just want to experience the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly xD
I live in South FL, raise monarch caterpillars, and have found that the wasps are so harmful to both the tiny hatchlings and later to the larger cats that miraculously got past them. I even leave them in the habitat for several hours until they flap, and then they go out on to the porch screen for several more hours. I've released them in just a half day and they just sit on a flower anyway, risking everything I just saved them from. An anole ate the abdomen on one drying its wings. Never again.
Had a female emerge 2 weeks ago, and getting colder very quickly, and so the remaing 8, will overwinter in the chrysalis stage, then emerge in the spring as adult butterflies.
I have 5 on my pasley right now. It is 10/13 & I live in Pennsylvania. I have NO idea what to do because the weather is getting cold. I am soon excited yet super sad because I am afraid they will die.
Very nice video but need to plant nectar plants. Do some research and see what nectar plants are native to your area. The plants that you showed don't provide nectar they're just flowers.
Releasing any butterfly before their wings are fully dry is NOT the right thing to do. They are sitting ducks for predators. If you are going to raise them, give them a fighting chance and release a minimum of 4 hours after eclosing. 🙄
I am so happy it made you smile! Thanks so much for watching.
Well, haha, as an at home mom, I have to say ... "I am a teacher, chef, doctor, personal shopper, gardener, etc..."

Thank you so much for watching and enjoying!
As always..thank you sooo much for commenting, rating, and, most of all - watching. Happy to share our experience with you.
i'm raising a bunch of these guys right now and one of them is just making a cocoon 🦋🦋 she's gonna be so pretty
Well, thank you so much for taking the time to watch my videos. I appreciate the kind comments.
Thank you so much for watching and I am so happy you were able to enjoy it too.
I love how you changed the music and started chasing him when he started to fly! 🤣😂🤣
Beautiful, thank you!

Parsley like from grocery store?
@@nadiamatejek5121 No, I cut it from my container garden.

Will your catepillars eat anything other than citrus leaves? Have you tried anise or anything else?
So store bought parsley?
They will eat the leaves on the lemon tree?
This was way better than watching paid TV.
Thank you.
timshel Leo Thank you!!!
Thanks for taking the time to watch. :)

Will they eat the monarch caterpillars? I thought that eating milkweed made them taste bad?

Would have been neat if you recorded them in time lapse to see how they make the chrysalis.
awww he recognize you by the way how many weeks did it past
Great video! Thank w!!
Very nice! I actually have three in an aquarium. They loved my dill. About how long were they in their chrysalis?
I think around a week or two. Hard to recall, but it was not very long. :)
Nice video:)
Can you feed them parsley from the grocery store?
How's about Binder Clips to hold this together?

Fantastic! Are you a teacher?
Use a potted parsley plant then you don’t have to constantly add cuttings
If you leave the cats on the Parsley watch out for the wasps they are attacking mine so I just moved them into a safe place.
