    Dude I know you recently lost your job but with your expertise and knowledge you should consider opening your own repair shop. With your reputation on TH-cam and a promising future of consumer electronics.... I don't think you'll have any problems getting business. Also your video editing, narration and general flow of your videos is top notch. Better than any tech repair I've seen. Keep up the good work. Also I am a miner and replaced some thermal pads on 30 series because memory was 100C+ under load. Better pads brought it to about 80C. But I also MEASURED the pads and used the right size for replacement 😂. Thank goodness people dont research so we have great content from you 😅

      @@northwestrepair Thanks for the reply. I understand it is not easy and requires time in addition to risk. Just my opinion from the outside looking in, you know your shit. Not if but WHEN another GPU shortage hits, either because of a crypto or AI boom, people will pay what the GPU is worth to have it repaired. Not speculation, actually happened with the last mining boom. GPU's are becoming less luxury and more essential with corporations buying them and AI cloud computing right on the horizon. When there is a GPU shortage, there will also be a technician shortage.

    XFX is indeed on the cheaper side of the manufacturers. I had the opportunity to play with an older chip (HD 6850) from both XFX and Sapphire. XFX had a joke of a cooler, Sapphire had a good sized fin stack. XFX ran 7C hotter. Not enough to kill the GPU, but enough to warrant the cheaper cooler - at least to XFX.

      XFX used to be good, but man oh man they have really gone down hill, and it started a long time ago too. I definitely don't trust them, but I think some of their cards are still good, just depends on the model. It's not good to blindly trust any brand, even the most reputable ones. 3:32 the corners of the die were not fully covered, it's usually better to manually spread paste with gpus, delta with AMD cards is usually 17/20 degrees (C) under full load.

      I used the "drop method' since I can remember. Always had nice spread of thermal paste. I always check even if this means I need to use double quantity of thermal paste. Spreading works for almost liquid thermal paste (like liquid metal). For normal paste, I put a drop, assemble the heat sink, disassemble, check, repaste then completely assemble.

      @cryspin7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well the stock pads on 580 nitro+ are 0.75mm but they are almost unobtanium. That's why you should research what thermal pads the card uses before you even open the card (or at least measure the old ones).

      I bought the Gelid Extreme 1.0mm pads for my 580 Nitro+ as I learned that the Extreme is squishy enough not to cause a no contact issue. Just do NOT use the Ultimate 1.0 as it is way too hard and WILL cause a no contact, overheating issue! I actually haven't tried them yet as the card seemed to run fine yet and I temporarily put it in storage anyway for now. Funny how Sapphire recommends using 1.0mm pads if you can't find the .75mm ones...and who can...but they forget to mention to make sure that they are squishy enough to compress correctly!

    • @OcDmn
      @OcDmn ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @arthurmann578
      @arthurmann578 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OcDmn The hard ones (sounds "dirty" ...LOL!) will prevent the core from making proper contact with the heatsink. You need the squishy ones to be able to compress enough so that the two make proper contact. I guess it is best to test it first by adding some thermal paste to the GPU, screwing it down properly, and then taking it all apart again to see if the paste got properly compressed. It does waste paste but it is WAY cheaper than needing to buy a new graphics card and you could always try it with a cheaper paste first, if you have it on hand, and THEN use the good stuff when you know it compresses properly.👍👍

    From what i heard, the 5700XT XFX cards had some pretty poor coolers, + it may also be a lowend card, but i would love to see a disasample of something like a higher end 6800/6800XT/6950XT card, to see if XFX´s higher end cards are good or bad quality whise.

    • @syncmonism
      @syncmonism ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds familiar. I think most of the 5700 XT cards had perfectly good coolers though. I definitely remember researching them when helping a friend to build a computer.
      I remember that the Sapphire Pulse and Powercolor Red Dragon were both definitely good models, offering an excellent balance between price and quality, with the Pulse being probably the best version of the 5700 XT in terms of value per dollar, but with many other cards not far behind it. The cheapest Powercolor model was pretty crappy though. It's sad when the worst models are often only about 10 or 20 bucks cheaper, but significantly worse. However, prices can fluctuate a lot, so never assume that a more expensive card is actually better. Also, it's never good to blindly trust even the most reputable brands, and even the worst brands can sometimes make good versions of a card. Also, a model with a major flaw does sometimes get a revision which fixes the flaw.
      It's always best to find a good review of the exact model of card, to verify if it's worth what it's priced at, before buying, if at all possible.

    navi 10 gpu's just always have high hotspot. Undervolting doesnt help either since amd cards aggressively push clocks up to the maximum power envelope or thermal envelope. Only way to save temperatures is louder fans or lower power limit. PSA: always contact the manufacturer directly to ask about the correct thickness of thermal pads when performing a thermal pad replacement.
    I was able to avoid this issue, except in my situation it was for the memory. I was cautious enough to do so when working on my older Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X OC to ask the manufacturer, even when the internet has numerous independant threads and sources stating it should be. Most referenced the EKWB manual for this card, which uses 0.5mm for the memory and 1.0mm for the VRM/MOSFET. But I was measuring a different thickness when I took the card apart; 1.0mm for both. After contacting Sapphire, they send me the Bill Of Materials (BOM) of this card, which states that ALL thermal pads are 1.0mm. This confirmed my finding of all of the factury pads on the card measuring 1.0mm.

    There is nothing wrong with amd the problem may be that the cooler's cold plate may not be perfectly flat!
    I know quite a few people who lap their coolers before installing them and can confirm I have seen temp drops of as much as 11C°!

    • @Kr0noZ
      @Kr0noZ ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If that is true, AMD could still slap their board partners for making their product look bad and ask them to improve on their manufacturing standards.
      Shit cooler tolerances should not be a thing, if you need to lap your coldplate on a brand new product to get thermals under control you got scammed. Not to mention most manufacturers will void your warranty for taking the card apart and messing with components, so if it dies later because they also cheaped out on something else, you're out of luck.

    I have a quick question about temps, which anyone can answer-
    Hot spot and memory temperatures. I have a palit 3080 and when under load my GPU temp is about 63°c, hot spot is as 74°c and memory temperature is 80/82°c. Is this normal? I ask as I've been getting a lot of crashing recently. No artifacts, just blacks screen for a few second or a straight up crash. Thanks guys

    I actully have the same ''issue'' on my Sapphire RX 5700.. on my stock cooler I have over 30c dif between hot spot and the regular gpu temp.. but I put the grapic card under water full block, not an issue any longer.
    That said, the Navi gpu's is designed to pull as much heat they can, 110c on the hot spot is not a problem, says AMD.. but I don't like 110c stuff in my PC.
    Anyhow.. I will always use water cooling for now on on my GPU's, full block.. good investment if you gonna have em 5+ years and OC'ed.

    There might be a higher percentage of sub-par AMD cards, but there's still lots of good quality ones, and it's not like there aren't a lot of poor quality Nvidia based cards as well. You can't just say "this is AMD in a nutshell" after pointing out the poor performance of this XFX card. I'm not a repair expert, but I do know that's an unfair over-generalization. That just completely discounts the fact that there are a lot of very good quality AMD cards out there.
    According to O! Technology, RX 6800's are all somewhere between very good and excellent, and this is indicative of the 6800 XT cards which use the same coolers being quite good as well, though there may be some models that he didn't include in his tier list. I have seen very good reviews for a variety of AMD graphics cards, especially RX 5700 XTs back in the day. I did some research when helping to find one for a friend, and was surprised to learn that Powercolor's Red Dragon model was apparently quite good (Gamer's Nexus is a good source). One good thing about that Red Dragon card was also that it was slightly smaller than some other models, making it a better fit for my friend's ITX case, but while still providing more than adequate cooling performance on the GPU AND memory.
    Sapphire has an exceptional track record for making good quality cards, and often at very reasonable prices at the same time. Powercolor has also been making a lot of really good but competitively priced cards as well.
    Personally, I have become a bit of a snob for quality in graphics cars, though I don't really care for the heavily over-engineered (and over-priced) models either. My current card is a Sapphire Pulse 6800 XT. on the GPU and memory
