@@PerlaNightangel we booked the hike through the tropicana hostel (tons of touring companies offer the hike). We chose tropicana due to price and reviews. They will pick you up from the airport in Guatemala city at ANY time of your choosing and also drop you back off when you leave antigua, even if you're not staying at the hostel. We stayed at an Air Bnb a few blocks away ( i can recommend that one too if you want. Locked gate and security cams). Then you just arrive the day of the hike at the hostel for breakfast, meet the group etc. Its a very very fun adventure. If you want more info about how to prepare ( very important), I can give you all the details on how to prepare etc. My email: seaver.neil@gmail.com

Wanderlust Awe Syndrome - I have been there twice. I'll be honest with you like I wish someone had been with me. I witnessed horrendous abuse towards indigenous people. Also, some degenerates learned my route I walked to my Spanish school. They started taunting me and throwing banana peels in my path. I was confused at first and thought it was some guatemalan custom!! Nope. Just old fashioned racism. Asked my teachers about the throwing banana peels thing and they said it was nothing. That didn't do me any favors, and made me feel even worse when I realized what it was and she just didn't feel comfortable telling me. Last thing, I ran into some residents of Livingston at the embassy. Livingston is basically where all the Guatemalan AfroLatinos live. It's a very isolated place away from everyone else. Anyway, I was chatting with them and they told me about their lives and how it was hard being treated the way they were by the Guatemalan government and society in general. But they can't do anything about it. It was a heartbreaker. So be forewarned, I gave it to you straight. However You may have better luck because you are a male and people probably will not be as bold with you. Mistreatment of women, especially walking alone, is more common.

I love this! As someone from Guatemala I love and appreciate how honest and helpful your tips are, most of the people when they come don't really talk about the pros and cons, mostly only the cons and that's not fun, guatemala is a great turistic and fun place, of course be careful at night and don't visit dangerous zones, but do visit Tikal, semuc champey, the beaches, atitlan and places like those, those are really great, and if you wanna spend a couple of days in the city try to go to zona 1, zona 10 if you like to party, cayala if you feel like spending some money, or just simply try to talk to locals, we love to chat and show our country, also if you can come you have to go to San Lucas market, there you can find really "native" food that you won't find anywhere else in the world!

Excellent video! We visited Guatemala in 2018 and it's nice to relive parts of the trip and to see other places. You're so right about Guatemala being much larger than it seems on the map! We had to drastically limit our plans when we found out the actual distances. We had hoped to visit both coasts/oceans. We visited Tikal, Flores, Guatemala City, Lake Atitlan, Antigua, and Hobbitenango. We took shuttles, flew, and drove a car. That was during about 4 days, so we still crammed stuff in. We had wanted to do even more! Guatemala has awesome sites and Mayans are so amazing!

With all honesty Guatemala is beautiful country, i was there for three months and i had no problems at all, some people exaggerate when it comes to difficulties but these don’t apply to all of us. Here in the USA we experience the ITM machines acting up or the computer is ‘ down ‘ etc but that’s not shocking because we are so use to it.It is all about get on with the program like everywhere in the world. In the US our inmunenologicle system is weak because we take medicine for any reason and processed food don’t help much. Be adventurous enjoy life you only live once!!!. Greetings from USA God bless you all !!!

I was lucky to have lived in Guatemala for 2 years when I was 14 years old and went back 30 years later to visit. It was just as beautiful as I remembered. I did climb the Volcan de Agua and Pacaya which were school trips. It was completely amazing. One of the highlights of my life was climbing the volcanoes and hearing the roar. Great experience. Very friendly people too. Don't believe the negative reviews. It's just like any U.S. city...you will find crime if you go to the bad areas.

The only thing that is different from what you described is the language, there are actually 21 different indigenous languages in Guatemala, but as you said everyone also speaks spanish. Guatemalan here: (1) Most ATMS work fine. You probably had bad luck or you were using the ATMS in remote locations, where it is hard to give them maintenance. But in the main cities, almost every ATM works perfectly. In tourist locations, as the airport and major hotels you can even withdraw dollars from the ATM. Everything else is precise, specially our chill, slow pace. My advice would be "find the tempo, find our rythm": Most of the time you will get things done, just a little chill and slower than at home. One of the greatests shocks we guatemalans get when visit the US or Europe is the fast pace on what you live. We are not in that kind of rush. Almost never. Nice video!

Top places to visit in Guatemala:
    1. Tikal / Peten (8 hours from Guatemala City)
    2. Antigua Guatemala (1.5 hours from Guatemala city)
    3. Lago Atitlan (4 hours from Guatemala city)
**The biggest town arround is Panajachel but you can go to any town arround the late, stay a night and visit the other little towns and villages)
    4. Izabal (6 hours from Guatemala City)
** Izabal has many places to go and its on the way to Peten, I sugest taking a few days or a week to do that travel, stay two days at Izabal and get to know stuff arround, then go to Peten from there and stay a few days in Isla las Flores, you can go to Tikal one day, explore the lake the next and then end by going to the rest of arqueological places).
    5. Coban (5 hours from Guatemala City) - as a city is nice but the true magic of Coban are the many amazing wonders near by, like Semuc Champei and Las Conchas.
After that there are many other places to go, Guatemala city included.

If traveling between major cities, don't do the chicken bus, do "Alamo" bus line, the travel times are equal to car travel and they make very few stops along the way. You can travel from Guatemala City to Quetzaltenango for less than $9 or $10 and not be over crowded.
