This is very similar to the 1990's "Glowball strobe" circuit. I wondered why they didn't use a 555, but it must be to lower the count of parts. Thanks for explaining how the circuit works.

What if I would use a photodiode at the input instead of a C?
Could I get a puls signal followed by enlightening the photodiode?

@@Blue.star1 I'm not familiar with the BC517, but 5 LEDs would be 100mA or less, so I assume the transistor can handle that.
I'm sure I've wired it right but all I get is the RED LED solid... :-(
