  • The Gordon Highlanders Association Drums and Pipes (Aberdeen) entertaining visitors to the 2022 Aboyne Highland Games. These were held on Saturday 6th August 2022 on the green at Aboyne in Deeside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The band, who wear Gordon tartan and are led here by Drum Major David Rae, were playing the set of tunes "Cullen Bay", "Fear a’ Bhàta" (The boatman), "Marquis of Huntly" and "Itchy Fingers" with a drum solo in between.
On their Pipe Banners is the word “Bydand”, which was the Regimental Motto of the Gordon Highlanders. This comes from the Doric Language as spoken in the North East of Scotland. The original phrase was "Byde" and "Fecht" which translates as Stay and Fight.

Thanks braemar for the video. I noticed some of the band had a checker pattern on their hats. 🤔 (know that's not the right term) Could you tell me the difference. Hope I don't sound to much like a stupid American. Old Hickory, Tn. 🇺🇸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Hi Dale, it's a good question. The diced bands seen on the Glengarries (caps) were worn by several Scottish regiments of the British Army, like the coloured hackles (feathers) seen in the feather bonnets. Many of the modern Pipe Bands were formed by soldiers after the wars and they adopted military uniform, including these caps with the diced bands, red being the most common. Of note the pattern was adopted for police use in 1932 by Sir Percy Sillitoe, Chief Constable of the City of Glasgow Police, but as black and white bands, then later blue. This is now the modern standard for Police vehicles across the world. Hope this helps. Regards, Dale in Braemar.
