Correction: the first selection, the Waltz, is Op. 64, no. 2, not Op. 69, no. 2. Novaes was still playing wonderfully well into her 70s as evidenced here. All the classic Novaes touches - that velvet tone, an infinite variety of tone colours, her captivating rubato, marvellous spontaneity, and that left hand which is constantly seeking out hidden voices (so reminiscent of Hofmann) - are present in these performances. And her A-flat Ballade, long a Novaes specialty (which so impressed Debussy, Fauré and Pierné at her audition for the Paris Conservatoire when she was only 13) is simply to die for! Thank you so much, Anna Claudia, for this priceless upload!
Absolutely stunning!!! Guiomar Novaes goes beyond what the composers wanted and had written in the sheet music, she puts her soul into a virtuous and unique interpretation for every peace of music. When we pay careful attention to what she is playing we can perceive every single note, we can admire the firm melodies and countermelodies played with her left hand. She makes use of the sustain pedal in a very controlled way such that nothing is "lost" and we can listen literally all notes. My admiration for Guiomar Novaes goes also in considering that as a woman at that time she overcame any obstacle to become an world class pianist and managed to develop a strongly acclaimed and loyal audience.
What a joy to hear such free-spirited, imaginative, lyrical playing with clear articulation of inner voices most of us would never have dreamt existed on our own.in an artist unafraid to throw caution to the winds and play spontaneously from her heart in front off audiences! So different from the sterile perfection we've grown accustomed to from contestants in international competitions these days. Novaes may have been past her prime in the last few years of her career, but she never failed to deliver enchanting interpretations particularly of Chopin. I doubt if any artist in the past century or more understood and succeeded in projecting such a deep understanding of Chopin's spirit. Thank you so much for making this available.
Very beautifull, but unfortunatelly, from 68 to 69 she lost so much of hers powers and strenght, as we hear on the other pieces of this programm... what a difference from the Novaes of 1968, in New York, with Previn, in the recital...
Guiomar... nossa maior heroína!!! O maior talento surgido no Brasil em toda a história. Nada de Pelé ou Senna .Ela supera todos com seu talento e com sua mão esquerda. E diga-se de passagem: A melhor mão esquerda de todos os tempos!!!! BRAVO Novaes!!!!
É ... percebe-se que era muito, muito especial. Uma interpretação longe de ser comum, espirituosa. A nota mais acentuada no primeiro trecho do refrão, como Cyprien Katsaris tb toca, deixa claro que são músicos virtuosos e que não se contentam com o comum. Uma pena não ter gravações com qualidade atual para maior deleite.

LA Divina who Harold Schoenberg put in the Josef Hofmann class! Her poetry can only be compared to Kempff or God!
