Mark Mathews doing the switch in 1990. World In Motion by New Order- goodness, it sounds like yesterday but is 33 years ago. Shocking how time evaporates in the blink of an eye. As Lennon said life is what happens when you are making plans. Still have good memories of both stations- loved the jingles and presentation.
I was there right at the start i used to do Blackpool Rock on a Friday night from 7 till 9pm on 2 turntables and 4 cart machines and masses of adverts. Happy days in the old church.
In Manchester this sounded good to receive, Used to enjoy the "Feel Live" Dance music show at a weekend, still have 90 min of it on tape from Early Summer 1999, and the show before it with more dance fillers, likes of Chicane, Pete Heller, Paul Oakanfold ect...
I would never have sold Red Rose Radio to anybody, it would stay Lancashire focussed and Lancashire driven, all those good local people kicked out of the station by commercial pressures and money men, it was an utter crime. I would've refused to sell it. It would still be Red Rose 301 Radio till the day I die if I had my way, over my dead body would it ever change. And studios would still be self-op, no computers, no automated presentation or playlists, no pre-recorded links and no networking or programme sharing.
Problem is, someone waves a few million ££££ and that's it, all seems worth it. If a lot of people had put programming over £££ then we wouldn't be where we are now
They were the days, when rock fm were the best with, tim lancaster, carl greenwood, kenny james, rob charles, dave shearer ect, prob engineered by the late grate, john myers,r.i.p big john,u was the the best,x
Radio, to me, did have an edge. I don't mind large radio groups. I've heard Heart and think Heart is brilliant. I just wish all stations had good imaging. If a station has imaging I hate, I won't listen. I won't even present on it. I've been known to do that. Rock's 'Breakthrough' sound still sounds awesome today and I am using it for my on-air sound.
No big groups in those days, working there was like being part of a family. I spent 12 very happy years of my life in that building.

When Rock FM was good.
A good station before, and a good station today. Very different, but catering to the generation we once were, imho.

Some great memories here. Any idea who did the Jingle Package which incorporates the Presenter ID into the TOH Jingle?
Good jingle package
I could even get rock fm in north Wales
And I have heard it on the Isle Of Man on holiday, it got out to quite a few places from Winter Hill the great tower of power in NW England!
