Always so good, John! What a mythical setting. Listening to this with my wife in the hospital waiting for our first child to be born.

This song is so good in so many ways! I've been reflecting a lot about the church in times of pandemic, quarantine, protests and hate, and I think this song resumes a lot of those feelings
Things are going to be a lot different after everything but if we stick to our roots that is Christ Jesus we will surely find our way out of the woods, even in the midst of trials

    Lyrics:
    [Verse 1]
The nights we spoke with tongues of fire
The days we walked out on the wire
We were young and we were not afraid
    [Verse 2]
The angels whispered in our ears
To tell us what the hilltop hears
Beholden to the promises we made
When we were young and we were not afraid
    [Verse 3]
    River waters moved inside
Our bodies like the ocean tide
The spirit swam the hallows of our veins
The years they roared like waves down on
    [Verse 4]
The rocky shores we stand upon
And beat against our banks with iron rage
When we were young and we were not afraid
    [Pre-Chorus]
We can still push up against those pillars
We can light those foxes tails ablaze
Nighttime still pushes up against the sun
Where we grow young and we are not afraid
    [Chorus]x
And you, you gotta find your way back home
    Out of the woods
And you, you don’t have to hold your own
You gotta find your way back home
    Out of the woods
    They’re gonna smoke you out
    They’re gonna find you out
    Out of the woods

I have no idea what this song means. Reading the lyrics did nothing. Am I that un-poetic or is this meant to not make sense?

    • @Calder90
      @Calder90 10 ปีที่แล้ว +19

For me, it reminds me of the Early Church. "Tongues of Fire" refers, of course, to Pentecost. "When we were young and we were not afraid," refers to the Apostles and the first disciples, who went out into the world and suffered persecution for His sake, and brought so many people to Christ. I think of Paul going to jail over and over, of James being beheaded, of Peter being crucified, and begging to be turned upside down because he felt unworthy to die like Christ had.
Almost 2000 years later, and I think the Church is in the same boat now as it was then. The days of "Christendom" are at there end, and we are becoming, albeit slowly, a persecuted minority, a peculiarity. We are in a post-Christian, and I would even say, in many ways, a "neo-pagan world." This is what my Church, the Catholic Church, means when it preaches the "New Evangelization." It is not the Gospel that is new, but we are no longer trying to educate people who are already vaguely or culturally Christian any more, but rather, our own backyards are becoming mission territory. The goal is no longer to catechize Christians, but to evangelize to those who are non-Christian, or perhaps even anti-Christian.
I find this song really beautiful. John Mark says:
And you, you gotta find your way back home
      Out of the woods
And you, you don’t have to hold your own
We have to become like the Early Church, which is an indirect way to say, we have to become more like Christ. We have to go out fiercely, full of love and faith, to preach the Gospel, even if it means losing our heads, literately or figuratively.

***** Perhaps. Or it could just be like artwork of paint splatters but because it's a popular artist everyone says "oh so amazing", Lol. It's definitely good music, but if I don't know what it means, I won't spend my time listening to it.

Well, JMM isn't an idiot. The title "tongues of fire" is directly lifted from the second chapter of the Acts of the Apostles. That it conjures images of the Early Church, then, isn't some sort of fluke.

      @marykatherineemoore7581 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

DaHamburglarGT Just because something is not initially clear, because it uses literary devices and figurative language does not mean we should abandon it simply due to the fact we "don't know what it means." I'm sure in school you read many great works, and I'm sure many were not easy to understand initially because of the language they used and the references to past historical events that were made (think Animal Farm, Ode to a Grecian Urn, etc.) In fact, even look at the Bible, at Jesus. Parables, for those of us who grew up in the church, are easy to understand. But when Jesus was first telling them they caused a lot of confusion. Indeed, the apostles warned us to be careful when reading God's Word because Jesus' preachings could be confusing. Just because something is difficult to understand, perhaps the meaning at first glance seems fuzzy, does not necessarily lessen its value. God has given us the ability to use critical thinking for a reason, we must apply to all areas of life. Including worship. If you are having a hard time understanding a song ask the Holy Spirit to show you its truth. I understand your fear of singing meaningless babble-- unfortunately many songs really on emotions and sensationalism-- it is a right concern, however, make sure you truly look at the words you sing, dwell on them, dissect them- even when the meaning may seem initially out of reach-- before dismissing them.
