Something I ponder, with quitting the battle because of the setting sun, does it show some Greek custom... maybe akin to how the Sabbath starts on the evening of the day prior; maybe it offends Zeus or Apollo to fight at night. Another thought, is it just logistical like not wanting to hunt at night? Perhaps tactically it was inefficent to keep fighting due to friendly-fire from low visibility. Lastly, does it shows Hector's piety. Perhaps he hears the prophecy and heads out in the evening thinking he'll have a quick 1v1 fight that he can't lose before sundown. The battle was about to end anyway because of nightfall (either from custom or logistics). He inteprets the prophecy to mean he'll defeat/kill his opponent and is shocked by Ajax because he realizes he couldn't kill the Achean at least not in the time left.
Hector's piety will be displayed in several of the books to come. It would be interesting to know if the end of the battle would be due to custom or logistics... it seems they fight at night in other portions of the poem.
Great show. Just one observation though; the origin of the names Hellenes and Hellenic for Greeks and Greek culture was not Helen of Troy but rather Hellen, son of Deucalion and Pyrrha who were the couple who survived the Greek version of the great flood.
The question was asked, why didn't Diomedes jump up to fight Hector right away? Given that he was unable to recognize whether or not Glaucus was a god in the previous book, Book 6, I thought that maybe he had already lost his Athena mojo? Just a thought.
Hi man, Love your topic it is good to listen while drinking coffee, may I ask a question? Do you know someone who is a Podcaster? You see... I`m taking my skills in a new direction and planning to help Podcaster fascinate their TH-cam Shorts and Instagram Reels videos and retain viewers in their social media. So I was wondering if you know someone who could use my help just like I did to Café Con Podcast and Fast Break Podcast. Thank you have a good day! 0:11
