You may not be trying to have a big TH-cam channel. That's OK. You are definitely talented in many areas. Thanks for this restoration video, and for the cool music.
Thank you! Would you believe I had two of them years ago as well but never thought to fix them at the time? I just put them out on the street and had to buy another one years later like a loser.
Tape a half inch wide block to the texta at 10:00. Then when you trace the cushion, you'll immediately have the final, offset line marked = more time for beer.
Great Job, I love it that these items are kept alive. I have two similar chairs however they have come without the reclining mechanisms. I just thought that they were non-recliners with some bits missing, I bought them because I love the style. I intended just the make them into non-reclining arm chairs. Now seeing this, I just need to find a way of making the reclining mechanisms. I don't suppose that you have better photographs in plan view? I can work around the dimensions and make some up.
Thankyou so much for this video. I was in the middle of restoring a chair just like this but my base attached material wasn't in good condition and didn't have the tabs that attached to the front spring. After seeing this I replicated your base design. I too, am doing this in lockdown (NSW) . Not a sew-er either. one down one to go. Got the 2 old chairs in ordinary condition for the bargain price of $12.50 for both!
Wow that's a huge a bargain! I've since seen other chairs where they've attached the bottom of the fabric to the bottom of the wood at the back, but I'm honestly very happy with the way I did it!
I never leave comments on videos, but this was an amazing restoration! Seriously, kudos! I'd love to do that to mine, but my sewing skills are non-existent.. Please post more restorations 😀
Absolutely amazing job!!! I was also struggling to find any helpful videos on the process of restoring this type of chair and thankfully came across yours, you have created such a professional finish, I live in Queensland and have just purchased 2 x Don Rex mid century recliner chairs (similar to yours) Don Rex was a prominent furniture manufacturer in the 50’s and 60’s in Queensland so I’m super excited to have them restored, your video will be a lifesaver, thank you 😊
oh awesome! I'm so glad I could help! and your chairs sound amazing! I've since found out that instead of using velcro to attach the bottom of the back cushion to itself, you can use screw-in press studs to attach the end of it to the back of the chair at the base. But I still love my velcro solution :)
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I got the contour cushion and base cushion from a place here in Melbourne (Australia) called Oz Upholstery supplies. ozupholsterysupplies.com.au/ I'd happily share the pattern with you, but the curved piece isn't accurate on the file ( I made it the right length and width so I could see where it would fit on the fabric before cutting it, but the actual curves are incorrect on screen, I got those from tracing the foam itself and adding seam allowance). I recommend getting the foam first and making a pattern from that directly, as your foam and your chair may differ from mine. Does that make sense?
@@hugoafterdark292 Hi would you mind sharing the upholstery pattern with me? I picked up basically the same chair the other day from Vinnies and it's bright red! Definitely time for some new fabric lol
@@palacinka9994 haha yes red is hard to make work in any room. I made a pattern directly from the foam I used by tracing it and adding seam allowance, so I don't have a file to share, sorry!
Hi, great video, can you add the type and thickness of the foam you used, I’ve got a similar project and don’t know whether to go medium or firm, thicker or thinner … any wisdom ?
Hi, I used the contour back cshion and the premium foam seat cushion from oz upholstery supplies: ozupholsterysupplies.com.au/product-category/foam-products-and-profiles/ Thanks for watching!
Hello! This is a brilliant video - thanks so much for it. I am currently starting a similar project but have no experience in the area. Would you mind letting me know where you purchased the foam from? Many thanks ☺️
Amazing work!! Am contemplating doing a similar project - roughly how much do you think you spent on all the materials (fabric, foam, stain, varnish etc)? And also, more specifically, how much was the fabric and how much did you need?
oh my goodness, I was going to try and keep a tally on everything but I simply didn't in the end! It was a labor of love, for sure. I just bought reasonably cheap fabric from the upholstery section in Spotlight, but made sure it was thin enough to fit in my domestic sewing machine. I think I bought about 5 metres of very wide fabric (150cm width), and only used about 3. A bit more if you count the bias binding!
I'm not entirely sure, but I suspect it would more likely be a honey brown colour, closer to the colour it was before I stripped it? My main point was that I hadn't researched it and just gone with the colour I wanted :)
Hey! It helps fill out the cushion cover, giving it that sweet rounded look. Make the cushion cover to the exact same measurments as the foam, and then add wadding to the foam, and you'll get that nice plump look. Without it, it'd probably be fine but it might be a little sad.
Wow, looks great. I might have to watch 30 times to be able to do it I think!
Very nice job , I'm amazed that these types of chair's have not been remade in modern times, they are sooo comfy
I have two similar chairs and was going to pay big money to get them redone, but will try it myself now. Thanks!!!
More please! You are incredibly talented. I am in awe
Thank you! I'm working on another video at the moment... :)
I've just bought a Parker Knoll to try and do something like this, thanks for the video!
This is great. I’m inspired to have a go now!
So great to hear! It's always worth trying that's for sure. :)

so kind of you to say, thank you :)
Fantastic job! Hope you ‘ll post more videos.
Excellent quality. Everything is made clear. All you need from start to finish 😍
I came for the restoration, I stayed for the royalty free Jazz.
It's like you're actually IN the elevator
Great video! I have a pair of very similar chairs to upholster and this is exactly the guide I needed. 😀

Love it! Top job 👍
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
Make more videos. You are very talented.
Haha I will, if and when I get the time!
Very nice work. This chair remodel is so hard to find. Must be an Aussie chair??
Right? I seriously couldn't find any info about them at the time and yet I see them everywhere!
@@hugoafterdark292 I agree.

What would the historically correct stain colour be?

Hey, what is the reason for putting the wadding over the foam?
