A CNC Precision 4-Facet Drill Sharpening Jig

  • Drill sharpening has always been a little problematic for me and after watching various other people's videos I think I have combined most of the ideas and produced a sharpening jig that is working very well.
    The jig is produced from a Solidworks model and then milled on the CNC machine. It features a 10mm guide that can be adapted to just about any grinder with a work surface which allows the jig to slide making the sharpening process very smooth. The guide is offset from the edge of the jig by a different amount for each face of the jig to allows the drill to be as close as possible to the grinding surface for each of the relief angles. I have found that the best relief angles are around 12 degrees for the primary facet and around 45 degrees for the secondary facet.
    A video that shows the alignment process a little more clearly is posted here: • A CNC Precision 4-Face... .
    All the examples show drills being ground from scratch but in practice, after a drill has been dulled, only the primary facet will need just a slight touch up to keep it sharp. That is a single setting on the grinder/belt sander will suffice for over 99% of the time.

    Hi
    Getting back to you on how i went after i purchased the jig
    I watched your video a few more times in hoping to understand it better
    I set the angle for the Primary Facet about 12 degrees
    Applyed the drill bit, and got the right
    Turned the jig around like you did in the video
    Next i set the angle for the Secondary Facet between 35 and 40 degrees
    The problem im having is i dont understand is, as the drill moves into the rotating sand paper, exactly what area of the drill bit face do i sand to create the Secondary Facet
    Ive looked and looked at your video to see or understand that part but i dont understand, which i cant achieve to finish off the sharpening
    Could you please explain in some way of what im not understanding.........
    Thank you

    • @Alex-ok7mg
      @Alex-ok7mg  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries. The benefit of grinding the primary facet first is that it provides you with a reference plane in order to cut the secondary facet. So once you are happy with the primary facet turn the jig around (as you have) but now align the cutting edge of the primary facet to the edge of the jig and then grind away the secondary facet.
      So, for example if the X axis is the direction that you slide the jig along, then the cutting edge of the primary facet should be aligned along the X axis (which is the same as the edge of the jig) parallel with jig .
      I have a posted a video into my dropbox that demonstrates the method a little better:

    Thats super cool thanks. Your video has helped me in many ways.
    I have just made a pro-edge style sharpening system for a cheap belt grinder and am researching making a drill sharpener or it. I had a similar idea to your implementation, except with a standard 59 degree grind, which is what I will make ( I need it partly because I have blunted several drills making the sharpening system components).
    Its refreshing to know that the idea works, so thanks for that. Also learned from your video to set the table at 12 degrees (clearance angle?), which I kind of knew I must do but wasn't confident about.
    What is that angle setting device you use as I was pondering how to make something to set the table angle, but would certainly buy something similar to the one you use?
    Thanks

    • @Alex-ok7mg
      @Alex-ok7mg  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the kind comments. Just watching the video again, I realise how bad it is and wish I could have done a better job but your points are correct. The other feature of the jig that isn't apparent in the video is that the slide is offset from one leading edge more that the other to account for the greater angle when grinding the second bevel. Otherwise the greater angle would cause a large gap between the jig and the belt making it difficult to hold the drill bits firm when grinding the 2nd facet - that is why you see me flipping it around just as I begin to adjust for the second facet.
      Since making it I found it very useful and now find I can "touch up" the edge of a drill in seconds compared with time it took setting up the other jigs I have purchased over the years.

      @@danceswithaardvarks3284 The nice feature that the pro-edge has is that all the angles that I have used are preset using alignment / index holes that set using a spring loaded pin.

    Hi Alex
    Just wondering how I can get hold of one of these jigs for my Robert Sorby
    What do you do when sharpening short 2 and 3 mm bits

    • @Alex-ok7mg
      @Alex-ok7mg  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Andy, rather than make individual items we are looking at having a large quantity made so this will hopefully make them available to those who want to purchase them in the near future.
      Regarding short 2mm and 3mm drills, it is possible and I have done it, the important factor is to make sure that the edge of the jig is close to the belt as possible and when I make the jigs I make sure that is the case. In the case of the small drills, the surface area of the primary face is so small that I am not sure there is much to be gained from creating a second facet, but you can if you are very delicate in your approach. This is the reason that when grinding the 2nd facet that you flip the jig around so that with the greater angle the drill you are sharpening remains close to the edge of the sorby belt.

    • @Alex-ok7mg
      @Alex-ok7mg  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a good point but I have found that if both edges have similar pressure applied and similar number of passes for each cutting edge that you can get very close to a perfect centring of the point.
