Yeah my favourite engine sounds are the distant roars in the foggy streets of NY when that thief is trying to break into a store, and the Camaro speeding on that mountain road
I know, though I was 12 when I saw it. In fact, when ever I went some where with my parents (or going to the same location) my Mom would call me just before they left and say "Gumball" It either meant they were heading to pick me up or on their way to our shared destination.
First time I saw a cobra on the cover of a car mag as a 70s kid I was mesmerized. Baddest car Id ever seen. One car mag tested one and on the cover it said 0-100-0 in 10 seconds. Thats insane.
IMO this is the quintessential car movie ever made! Unfortunately, Smokey and the Bandit over-shadowed it because of Burt Reynolds but, seriously, if you haven't seen this movie, you need to! That Cobra is the sickest beast in all car movies, EVER!!! Vanishing Point is a close, second, movie-wise!

Fun fact.... We used to drive like that to the Holland and Lincoln tunnels on just about any weekend... You get a very cool tunnel vision trippy feeling when you hit about 110 to 120 in any of the tunnels. 😎👍👍
No smartphones, no internet. Just cars and girls and fun, fun, fun. It was a very different world back then. Now people live for and on their phones 24/7. Sad.
I agree; I got my license in 76 just as this movie, cannonball run and smoky and the bandit came out. Awesome time to be alive. we were out street racing several nights a week and I can remember nights when 30 to 40 cars showed up to race and upwards of 500 spectators. Cops were cool and just told us to pack it up and go home, IF they showed up at all. Now we live in a leftist hell hole where individual rights to freedom and enjoying life are crushed at every opportunity and people refuse to take responsibility for their actions.
Still one of the corniest but best car movies. Parts filmed in my town of Prescott, AZ, and they were going up and down a short stretch of White Spar (AZ89).
I am a Dodge man, but I must say I am most impressed with scenes of the Chevy van pulling out of the garage and the Camaro in the whole movie. I didn't like its fate, though. The scene in which the Z runs the red light reminds me of my brother and his red one. The mufflers were low slung and would scrape the street in some areas.
I wonder what engine that Porsche had for the girl to be so sure that she would outrun an American V8 beast. Today a Porsche is a powerful car even in American standards, but in the 1970's what was powerful in Europe could be weak or average in the US.
Yeah, but for me (maybe because I saw Cannonball Run on TV years later) feels like the imitator. EDIT: Just did some research (Looking for Gumball Rally DVD/Blu-Ray) and Cannonball Run came out in 1981, five years later, so I was right to feel it ws just an imitation. (Ahh, the world is back in balance -except for 2020)
@@WailwulfIndeed. In fact, Brock Yates tried to sue Chuck Bail directly for allegedly stealing his idea out from under him. That's why cannonball came out 5 yrs later.
@@Wailwulf The Cannonball Run came out in 1981 but I think the OP is referring to Carquake (1976) which is sometimes also known as just Cannonball (as opposed to The Cannonball Run).
I love some of the cars. The Rally Sport Camaro is the best. Too bad the white chrome bumper Corvette was ruined. If this was real, the drivers are driving recklessly and illegally. But, this is so much fun to watch.
I didn't like the Camaro flipping. Hell she could have been put back on her wheels with the help of some people, even if only for a selfish reason to clear the traffic jam caused by her.
Is that bike on old H2 2 stroke? Soundtrack for the camaro and cobra are badazz. Truly the era where most flicks without some car chases or hot rods was deemed lame.
The tunnel is the Holland Tunnel. And the toll plaza is at the original (before they constructed the park and ride facility) Secaucus NJ 495/NJ 3 connection to/from the New Jersey Turnpike, which was not part of the toll ticket system used on the rest of the NJ Pike. Note the 'Lincoln Tunnel New York' overhead sign in the background of the scene.
It's the Holland Tunnel. I always wanted to do that, race through there. Coming out of the tunnel on the NJ side you go around a loop which presents probably the most gorgeous view of the NYC skyline ever. To this day, though, I can't look at it, after 9/11. It's just not the same with those towers gone.
My dad tells me there was a 2nd gumball rally movie, but I cant find it.. he says it has the mad hungarian riding his motorcycle out of a plane.. he also said it has most of the original cast. Can anyone confirm this? I cant find anything on the net about a 2nd movie.
At one point, the real Gumball Rally and Cannonball Run were actually separate races. And the Cannonball Run movie was not a remake of Gumball Rally, but was partially based on events (like the transcontinental ambulance) that actually happened in some of the Cannonball races. But I fully agree, Gumball Rally is far better than either of the Cannonball movies.
