Why is there a sudden surge of interest around green hydrogen? | Business Matters | The Hindu

  • Something curious has been happening of late in the Indian industry of late with respect to the production of green hydrogen. Last year, Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani had announced their efforts in making inexpensive Green Hydrogen, committing to bringing down cost of GH2 to below $1 a kg compared current global costs that can range between $3 and $6.
    Why this sudden frenzy over hydrogen? Why should the Indian government have a policy on it? And why should it be green? Why is this important to you?

    Great you have tried to cover almost all aspects of green hydrogen, i would like to submit few other aspects,For example if it is for exporting only means keeping pollution to self and green part to others. Or importing solar pannels /photoionic cells in future. So even energies can be green ,production,uses and manufacturing /mining of related products can not be pollution free. Claim of only carbon dioxide as only pollution is childish . We cannot breath hundred percent pure oxygen of nitrogen too. So even excess of oxygen is also pollution only. Only balance of everything is green or pollution free. Excuses for money making and keeping own home clean.

    Whether green hydrogen or electric, both technology require large amounts of energy. India should transition to more nuclear power (become part of the nuclear suppliers group as a member of Quad and a G-10 power). India will also need to focus on securing water in the pradesh, possibly desalination on it's coasts... India has lots of friends that can help it develop Nuclear (US, Japan, France, Israel)... but it must happen now.

    • @lesliefish4753

    • @yahooonline7284
      @yahooonline7284 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's easy to say that we should open nuclear power plant (NPP) in every state
      > But it requires atleast 10 - 15 years to become operational.
      > Currently only few countries have thorium based (NPP) & it's R&D is going on but it still very costly compared to uranium based (NPP)
      > The project cost gets increases by atleast 2 - 3 times when it becomes operational
      > Several researchers & teams have done their research and according to them solar power plant (SPP) is much more viable & ROI is much better when compared to (NPP)
      > The few downside of Solar power plant (SPP) that they only have operational life of 25 years & it doesn't work in night time
      > Several combination can be made with Solar power plant (SPP) like :
      Solar + green Hydrogen plant
      Solar + Wind + Hydro power plant
      > So for country like bharat it's better to stick with solar, hydrogen & other renewable energy

    Govt should include electrolyzer production into the green hydrogen policy to make it cheaper.
    Hydrogen Vehicles are still far away , at this point of time our focus should be to promote electric vehicles and not on hydrogen Vehicles , we may think about it in the later decades when we will be able to produce green hydrogen at 1$/kg.

    • @sandipanaich
      @sandipanaich ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Electric vehicles are not really green today. Green Hydrogen will help to reach net zero emission. Lithium ion is not a long term solution.

    • @anveshnidumolu3679
      @anveshnidumolu3679 ปีที่แล้ว

      talking about lithium ion,we could use sodium ion or vandideum redox based cell with transducer, in general term converting mechanical energy into chemical energy , further convert into electric energy. there are research going on... while experiment leads to budget default.
      takes time to get actual zero emision clean energy.
      strange part Nuclear energy is also clean energy, in hands of good people without harnnessing for war.

    • @kushalvora7682
      @kushalvora7682 ปีที่แล้ว

      If we are able to produce green hydrogen at 1 dollar then doesn't this mean electricity would be even cheaper? Also lets not forget the low efficiency of green hydrogen. Green hydrogen imo is just a fad.

    • @groot843
      @groot843 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sandipanaich I believe that govts rationale behind the push for green hydrogen based cars, is that the next gen engines may be based on hydrogen fuel and also in EV cars production india lagged behind. So to gain an early upper hand might be good. In all this we cannot overlook the innovations in battery technology and charging infrastructure. I believe its mundane to assume that we will use lithium ion batteries forever, there will be better alternative soon enough. Countries that have gained ground in EV manufacturing will surely want to keep their position by innovating further.

  • @sripadkulkarni
    @sripadkulkarni ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Petrol is a depleting source, would be scarce in another decade or two, plus the added goals of climate change would definitely rule out this fossil.
    For battery run electric car, we need to mine lithium, which is again a depletable resource and the li-ion batteries are known to have been unstable plus the added range fear.
    The only viable option left is Hydrogen available in abundance. The process to extract Hydrogen needs to be made cheaper, once done there's no stopping. Elon Musk might disregard it due his investments in mining lithium but internally he knows what works in future for sure. There are many people who would discourage the work in this sector due to their own set of reasons but India should take this opportunity to usher a new Era of clean energy and also turn itself into fuel exporter from importer. The only way we could improve our economy quickly.

  • @lesliefish4753
    @lesliefish4753 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's not necessary to use Hydrogen *fuel cells*; thanks to improvements in containment, we can pump Hydrogen directly into engines -- just like gasoline. It's possible to *convert our existing IC engines* to run on Hydrogen, which will make a faster and cheaper conversion to zero-emission vehicles.

To reduce the huge oil imports bill n to safeguard it's 1.3 billion people's well-being from super power's oil rate blackmail tactics, India must use huge coal fired power plants to create hydrogen abundantly to be used in our vehicles. First 3 decades use this method to save money n then in 4th decade it can go for green hydrogen
