Out of the light novels I have read, spice and wolf takes the top for me. I know he put it In A tier, but I personally love a slower pacing in many circumstances.
I just gotten into Light novels and I only read MT and I absolutely loved it and it definitely changed my life for lack of better term. I also read Arifureta and Slime and I mostly agree with your description. great video and definitely saving it as a recommendation video for my journey in reading more LN
@@waltzbell1241 actually no imagine it's written by an author that's simply not yet fully experienced, who get's better over time meaning the first book is decent but not good and suddenly all of the following books are crazy good, (which is something that others have told you). So you miss out on 9 good books because you did not like the first. Sounds dumb to me to stop after the first when LITTERALLY EVERYONE tells you it get's way better later.
What an amazing list to pick something to read from. Its always cool to find someone with similar tastes putting something high that I havent read. "Monster Tamer" is one that i never see mentioned anywhere but does a good job of developing the characters.

If you only got Schadenfreude from re zero I'd assume you're not even through volume 3. The reason I love it is it's the opposite of grim dark, as return by death gets him to care about everyone who dies around him to an insane extent, and also shows how people with many layers of struggles in their lives can act at their lowest points while still being able to grow with understanding.

My favorite novel is "Lord of Mysteries". It's a bit dark but the best novel out there if you are a fan of H. P. Lovecraft. I'd love a video about that.
About classroom of the elite, volume 1 and 2 are set up so it's pretty normal to find it mediocre during the start. It definitely gets better volume 3 onwards so I hope you read further. I know it's tiring to hear "it gets better after x amount of volumes" but it definitely holds true for classroom of the elite.

Given your large experience in the light novel world, I found surprising that you haven't read "The Empty Box and Zeroth Maria" yet. I haven't read it either, and thanks to it's big popularity in the LN world, I was hoping to get an better idea with an overview of the series. Also, another one among those lines is the "Haruhi Suzumiya" and the "Monogatari" novel series. Those 2 I've already read some volumes - definitly recommended. Anyways, nice tierlist. Liked your vid.
Thanks for the tier list. I am relatively new to the light novel scene. I only started reading LN at the end of April. I was watching the Danmachi anime. Now 2 months later I have read the entire Danmachi series including its spin-offs like Sword Oratoria. I’m still deciding which LN series I am going to read next.

I would recommend reading Zeroth Maria. There hasn't been any media that i can remember that could move me to tears except for this one. 11/10 series for me
Irregular at Magic High: For me it is A-tier mostly because I really like the world building (how dark it is if you read in between the lines), and since the incest is depicted as something that is supposed to be disturbing so it does not bother me that much. It is the result of genetic and magic manipulations on unborn children and everybody except potentially the two MCs are just as disturbed about it as we the readers would be in RL. I might also make it S-tier were it not that it looses steam later on.
As a huge Danmachi fan it makes me really happy to see it in S tier. It's easily one of my favourite Light Novel series and Fantasy series in general I am also a Shield Hero fan but you are right. I have struggled to continue reading the series after volume 15. It also struggles from the issue of while not technically being on Haitus. It's been years since the last novel
I would say the first 5 volumes of Shield Hero are S Tier material like was shown in the first season of the Anime but after that it gets pretty bad although it recovers somewhat once Atla becomes a main character, and then it somewhat goes downhill again sadly... I can't really argue with an overall B Tier ranking...
I'm assuming the major flaw you are talking about is Rudeus' perversion, because that is like the sole reason people give for rating it poorly. It makes the series a hit or miss because the reader is kind of bombarded with Rudeus' perverse thoughts and action and it makes him an unlikeable MC before the story can really take off (Even though it does take off quite quickly and stays interesting throughout).
started reading the light novel for Mushoku tensei this past month already caught up to volume 24. its world building and story is amazing. sadly got to wait for 25 and 26 tho ive already pre ordered them; sadly wont be reading them anytime soon cause 25 comes out in December and 26 march. now going to start a different series most likely "the beginning after the end"

Yeah, love to see Eminence in S tier. All 5 volumes so far have been amazing. And yes, classroom of the elite is amazing later on, takes a few volumes until it picks up a bit. Mushoku tensei is also amazing man. Re:zero is probably my fav on the list but A tier is def acceptable. How far did you read of re:zero? Bakemonogatari is pretty good if you have not read that one.
I would recommend Orc Eroica and Fake Saint of the year. Both of these LN's EN translations came out relatively recently and I had fun reading them. They both are misunderstanding comedies. Orc Eroica is about a virgin Orc War Hero that wants to get laid after the long war he fought in was over. It has some really neat world development, as well as fun fights and decent comedy. The main character, Bash is so fun. Basically, orcs of that world, while being rampant rapists and horny bastards, actually have a deep sense of chivalry in their culture, and nobody personifies that chivalry better than Bash. Bash is stoic, loyal and strong. But he's also horny, awkward and is part of the orchish culture just as much as any other orc. Gigachad energy is strong with that one. Watching him repeatedly try and fail to get out of the maidenless gang is so amusing fr fr. Fake Saint of the year is actually one of my all-time favorite WNs, filled to the brim with emotional scenes. While some of the jokes might get overplayed a little too much, I stayed for the characters. It's about an otaku dude who gets reincarnated as a villainess Elize in his favourite VN and aims to save the main heroine from gruesome death. He basically steals the identity of the heroine and becomes a "saint", a hereditary hero who fights the evil forces of the witch and dies at the end. The main shtick is, that Elize becomes so fucking good at pretending to be a saint, she breaks the whole system and completely derails the plot. I know it sounds like a cliche story, but it's written well, it has a clear goal and an amazing ending. The LN is still at it's first volume though, so I would recommend reading the WN.

I really appreciate this video, as I’ve only recently gotten into light novels and have been trying to figure out what to read next. I’ve been doing tons of research but it just seems like such a toss up when a solid premise can so easily make for a mediocre series in the medium. That being said, seeing that our tastes appear to be fairly similar, this has seriously helped me narrow down my list of titles into the ones I think are worth my time. Oh Jesus you haven't read The empty box of maria? I unsure of it if you heard it before, but I highly recommend it since it's a light novel exclusive with no prospects of becoming an anime or manga, also it's just 7 volumes long. The genre is a time travel story with supernatural elements and human drama with characters that don't have a powers, or more so powers that are combative and direct.
You haven't read Peak Fiction "Toaru majutsu no Index"? Man I'd heavily recommend the god tier unbeatable piece of peak fiction top 1 selling novel for years. Really man, in terms of writing with no plot holes and the best power system/world building/top 3/2/1 protagonists canonically over the years. Man, the badly adapted Anime of the main series "Index" is enough for me to call it the one above all.
And yes, seeing how you really like fantasy novels, Index will give you the experience of a student who studies in a science class while reading an accurate bible. 100% guaranteed for Index to beat every of yours expectation and make you call it peak fiction after about 4 volumes out of 50+
Classroom of the Elite for sure gets better after volume 1. Volume 1 is just a set up for the series. It introduces characters and the overalls structure of how the school works. It’s basically just a info dump. The story gets better and better
Ascendance of a Bookworm in 1st place automatically makes you credible, the rest of your list is also really good. Im surprised since most tier lists kinda suck. Also may i recommend The Empty Box and the Zeroth Maria. Its in my top 3 light novels next to Bookworm and Mushoku Tensei.

i would like to recommend some light novels "i was caught up in a hero summoning" "road to kingdom" "i am the evil lord in an intergalactic empire" "ghosujin sama to yuku isekai servival" "Me a genius? i was reborn into another world and they got the wrong idea" All solid S for me
a few of the titles in the tier list I have read (Reign of the Seven Spellblades, both SAO entries, Endo and Kobayashi Live, CotE, and WorldEnd (yes that destroyed me so hard in the feels department)) made it on here. The one that really got me into reading light novels was Accel World and I bought the first volume of that series almost 9 years ago. There are still titles that I would like to check out in the future/read, the one problem is the never ending backlog...
Rend and The Reincarnation of Alysara are two novels I’d like to recommend. The Reincarnation of Alysara is about a fox girl who was a little too curious and blinded herself now blind she must use mana to see helping her discover the secrets of Magic. Rend is set in a alternate history, with creatures from other dimensions try to invade earth and a law student with psychopathic tendencies that accidentally gets turned into an aberrant a being with super powers with the con that a being from another dimension is trying to invade your mind. These are both web novels with them both being on the same site which is scribblehub. Both novels are really good plus there free so there’s no reason not to read them. also with rend the main character with psychopathic tendencies I don’t mean in a edgy way. Honorable mentions NENOmancer reborn. empress evolution. Who Says All Saints Need to be Good?. And d.e.m.o.n.s getting summoned weekly.

Great list, would wish Arifureta and Shield Hero are a bit higher though lol. My suggestion: Go for series close to completion or already ended. You may like How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom. Not to be rude or anything, but the only complaint you said about dendrogram was that the story didn't capitalize enough on the npcs being like humans, but vol 3 tackles the fact that players can't permanently die and uses that to show how the npcs use it as a form of entertainment. Volume 7 is entirely about how they are so human that people actually fall in love with these npcs and how players and npcs can have kids under specific conditions. Vol 8 is about how the npcs view the sudden appearance of players and how the governments willingness to employ them drastically changes warfare. Big Spoiler And volume 9 specifically hints towards the world being an actual place and the history that led towards it being used as a game and how the game mechanics work in this real place.
Obviously this is your own preferences but i don’t really get why some novels were put further down the list for not having an complete english translation, but Ultraman, which doesn’t have one at all still gets A. Other than that, good video

If you have room to add to your reading list, I beg you to read "A Sister's All You Need". It is criminally underrated. The characters are mostly adults, the comedy is great, the series delves really deep into the Light Novel/Anime industry, and the entire series has been translated into English, making it a pretty quick read.
I was nodding my head along until you put spice and wolf as an A and spider as an S. I'd flip those in my list. And I actually yelled at you when you put Apothecary Diaries as a C
I was wondering when I'd get the first comment about Apothecary Diaries placement. When I was putting this together I had only read the first couple volumes. The writing for the series gets way better as it goes on and I would put it in at least A now that I'm fully caught up to the most recent volume.
the world settings of mushoku tensei is very good but unfortunately, the MC is putting me off due to his origin story is bad, his attitude is also questionable and the story plot is too blend. In the end, the potential of story plot is totally wasted and I drop it 2/3 of the way.
The only thing from your s tier that I have to disagree with is Violet Evergarden. The LN was a mixed bag some good stories and some very bad ones. The anime was better then the LN.

Spice and Wolf, So I'm a Spider So What, Arifureta, Devil is a Partimer, Suka Suka, Chivalry of a Failed Knight (fan translation), Mushoku Tensei, Alderamin in the Sky (fan translation) and Violet Evergarden are all completed with English translations (and there might be a couple I missed).

I only read the manga of the apothecary diaries so I can’t say anything about the light novel, but it should have been placed higher. I highly recommend the apothecary diaries and if you like ascendance of a bookworm you should definitely try it. The protagonists are very alike mainly their obsession over books/medicine. Also 86 deserves s tier fight me

I've read past the first volume but I'm not fully caught up on this series. I'm already really enjoying it but it's quite possibly I'll have an even higher opinion of it when I get through some of the more recent volumes.
As an Overlord ln reader I know how much the books can have over the anime BUT having seen the anime I really don't get the hype. It just felt like Re: Zero didn't have the balls to go full Groundhog Day and instead compensated with shock factor since nothing bad ever sticks. Hell, most Re: Zero fans can't even follow the plot of a single scene considering how big "I love Emilia" was. It amazes me that so many people somehow forgot Rem was the one who rejected Subaru
@@BenersantheBreada lot of bad stuff sticks with Subaru, and the writing and plot twists progressively improve with each volume. It’s rare to get an excellent plot and characters to this degree. Honestly, the first volumes are entertaining, but compared to the rest of the series, it evolves so much. You shouldn’t care about fandoms try to enjoy it. And technically, it isn’t Groundhog Day. It’s an unreversible checkpoint system that makes every death count, this makes the reader afraid to have a new checkpoint as important characters could easily die.
To be fair Re Zero LNs kinda suck compared to WN, especially when you throw English translations into the mix. Not only are they slow, they are also kinda crap. Would prefer WN over LN any time.
I most definitely have to recommend DoraTama aka Reincarnated as a Dragon’s Egg. Rather simple characters, but great characterization and amazing fights.
nooooo an archdemon delemma is one of my fav novels... well i have ONE you should try thats not on the list. maybe 2.... "Seirei gensouki" (or spirit fantasy) and "the greatest magicmasters retirement plan" they are my first 2 fav novels next to eminence in shadow and re zero.

I don't mean this in a condescending way or anything I'd just like to recommend you Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint (Korean Webnovel), which I think you'd consider a very interesting read! Also it's complete, I haven't finished it myself admittedly but I've heard a whole lot from its fans, so I thought of recommending it.

My favorite novel is "Lord of Mysteries". It's a bit dark but the best novel out there if you are a fan of H. P. Lovecraft. I'd love a video about that.

About classroom of the elite, volume 1 and 2 are set up so it's pretty normal to find it mediocre during the start. It definitely gets better volume 3 onwards so I hope you read further. I know it's tiring to hear "it gets better after x amount of volumes" but it definitely holds true for classroom of the elite.

Given your large experience in the light novel world, I found surprising that you haven't read "The Empty Box and Zeroth Maria" yet. I haven't read it either, and thanks to it's big popularity in the LN world, I was hoping to get an better idea with an overview of the series. Also, another one among those lines is the "Haruhi Suzumiya" and the "Monogatari" novel series. Those 2 I've already read some volumes - definitly recommended.

Irregular at Magic High: For me it is A-tier mostly because I really like the world building (how dark it is if you read in between the lines), and since the incest is depicted as something that is supposed to be disturbing so it does not bother me that much. It is the result of genetic and magic manipulations on unborn children and everybody except potentially the two MCs are just as disturbed about it as we the readers would be in RL. I might also make it S-tier were it not that it looses steam later on.

I am also a Shield Hero fan but you are right. I have struggled to continue reading the series after volume 15. It also struggles from the issue of while not technically being on Haitus. It's been years since the last novel
Danmachi is a fabulous read.
One of those ‘wow-the title really downplays the intensity and depth of this great writing/storytelling’.
I would say the first 5 volumes of Shield Hero are S Tier material like was shown in the first season of the Anime but after that it gets pretty bad although it recovers somewhat once Atla becomes a main character, and then it somewhat goes downhill again sadly... I can't really argue with an overall B Tier ranking...

I'm assuming the major flaw you are talking about is Rudeus' perversion, because that is like the sole reason people give for rating it poorly. It makes the series a hit or miss because the reader is kind of bombarded with Rudeus' perverse thoughts and action and it makes him an unlikeable MC before the story can really take off (Even though it does take off quite quickly and stays interesting throughout).

started reading the light novel for Mushoku tensei this past month already caught up to volume 24. its world building and story is amazing. sadly got to wait for 25 and 26 tho ive already pre ordered them; sadly wont be reading them anytime soon cause 25 comes out in December and 26 march. now going to start a different series most likely "the beginning after the end"

Yeah, love to see Eminence in S tier. All 5 volumes so far have been amazing. And yes, classroom of the elite is amazing later on, takes a few volumes until it picks up a bit. Mushoku tensei is also amazing man. Re:zero is probably my fav on the list but A tier is def acceptable. How far did you read of re:zero? Bakemonogatari is pretty good if you have not read that one.

I would recommend Orc Eroica and Fake Saint of the year. Both of these LN's EN translations came out relatively recently and I had fun reading them.
They both are misunderstanding comedies.
Orc Eroica is about a virgin Orc War Hero that wants to get laid after the long war he fought in was over. It has some really neat world development, as well as fun fights and decent comedy. The main character, Bash is so fun. Basically, orcs of that world, while being rampant rapists and horny bastards, actually have a deep sense of chivalry in their culture, and nobody personifies that chivalry better than Bash. Bash is stoic, loyal and strong. But he's also horny, awkward and is part of the orchish culture just as much as any other orc. Gigachad energy is strong with that one. Watching him repeatedly try and fail to get out of the maidenless gang is so amusing fr fr.
Fake Saint of the year is actually one of my all-time favorite WNs, filled to the brim with emotional scenes. While some of the jokes might get overplayed a little too much, I stayed for the characters. It's about an otaku dude who gets reincarnated as a villainess Elize in his favourite VN and aims to save the main heroine from gruesome death. He basically steals the identity of the heroine and becomes a "saint", a hereditary hero who fights the evil forces of the witch and dies at the end. The main shtick is, that Elize becomes so fucking good at pretending to be a saint, she breaks the whole system and completely derails the plot. I know it sounds like a cliche story, but it's written well, it has a clear goal and an amazing ending. The LN is still at it's first volume though, so I would recommend reading the WN.

I really appreciate this video, as I’ve only recently gotten into light novels and have been trying to figure out what to read next. I’ve been doing tons of research but it just seems like such a toss up when a solid premise can so easily make for a mediocre series in the medium. That being said, seeing that our tastes appear to be fairly similar, this has seriously helped me narrow down my list of titles into the ones I think are worth my time. I unsure of it if you heard it before, but I highly recommend it since it's a light novel exclusive with no prospects of becoming an anime or manga, also it's just 7 volumes long.
The genre is a time travel story with supernatural elements and human drama with characters that don't have a powers, or more so powers that are combative and direct.
I've heard good things about The Empty Box and Zeroth Maria. I definitely need to get around to reading it it. Thanks for the recommendation!

Man I'd heavily recommend the god tier unbeatable piece of peak fiction top 1 selling novel for years. Really man, in terms of writing with no plot holes and the best power system/world building/top 3/2/1 protagonists canonically over the years. Man, the badly adapted Anime of the main series "Index" is enough for me to call it the one above all.
And yes, seeing how you really like fantasy novels, Index will give you the experience of a student who studies in a science class while reading an accurate bible. 100% guaranteed for Index to beat every of yours expectation and make you call it peak fiction after about 4 volumes out of 50+

Classroom of the Elite for sure gets better after volume 1. Volume 1 is just a set up for the series. It introduces characters and the overalls structure of how the school works. It’s basically just a info dump. The story gets better and better

a few of the titles in the tier list I have read (Reign of the Seven Spellblades, both SAO entries, Endo and Kobayashi Live, CotE, and WorldEnd (yes that destroyed me so hard in the feels department)) made it on here.
The one that really got me into reading light novels was Accel World and I bought the first volume of that series almost 9 years ago. There are still titles that I would like to check out in the future/read, the one problem is the never ending backlog...
Rend and The Reincarnation of Alysara are two novels I’d like to recommend.
The Reincarnation of Alysara is about a fox girl who was a little too curious and blinded herself now blind she must use mana to see helping her discover the secrets of Magic.
Rend is set in a alternate history, with creatures from other dimensions try to invade earth and a law student with psychopathic tendencies that accidentally gets turned into an aberrant a being with super powers with the con that a being from another dimension is trying to invade your mind.
These are both web novels with them both being on the same site which is scribblehub. Both novels are really good plus there free so there’s no reason not to read them.
also with rend the main character with psychopathic tendencies I don’t mean in a edgy way.

Not to be rude or anything, but the only complaint you said about dendrogram was that the story didn't capitalize enough on the npcs being like humans, but vol 3 tackles the fact that players can't permanently die and uses that to show how the npcs use it as a form of entertainment. Volume 7 is entirely about how they are so human that people actually fall in love with these npcs and how players and npcs can have kids under specific conditions. Vol 8 is about how the npcs view the sudden appearance of players and how the governments willingness to employ them drastically changes warfare.

And volume 9 specifically hints towards the world being an actual place and the history that led towards it being used as a game and how the game mechanics work in this real place.

The characters are mostly adults, the comedy is great, the series delves really deep into the Light Novel/Anime industry, and the entire series has been translated into English, making it a pretty quick read.

I was wondering when I'd get the first comment about Apothecary Diaries placement. When I was putting this together I had only read the first couple volumes. The writing for the series gets way better as it goes on and I would put it in at least A now that I'm fully caught up to the most recent volume.

the world settings of mushoku tensei is very good but unfortunately, the MC is putting me off due to his origin story is bad, his attitude is also questionable and the story plot is too blend. In the end, the potential of story plot is totally wasted and I drop it 2/3 of the way.

Spice and Wolf, So I'm a Spider So What, Arifureta, Devil is a Partimer, Suka Suka, Chivalry of a Failed Knight (fan translation), Mushoku Tensei, Alderamin in the Sky (fan translation) and Violet Evergarden are all completed with English translations (and there might be a couple I missed).

I only read the manga of the apothecary diaries so I can’t say anything about the light novel, but it should have been placed higher. I highly recommend the apothecary diaries and if you like ascendance of a bookworm you should definitely try it. The protagonists are very alike mainly their obsession over books/medicine.

I've read past the first volume but I'm not fully caught up on this series. I'm already really enjoying it but it's quite possibly I'll have an even higher opinion of it when I get through some of the more recent volumes.
As an Overlord ln reader I know how much the books can have over the anime BUT having seen the anime I really don't get the hype. It just felt like Re: Zero didn't have the balls to go full Groundhog Day and instead compensated with shock factor since nothing bad ever sticks.
Hell, most Re: Zero fans can't even follow the plot of a single scene considering how big "I love Emilia" was. It amazes me that so many people somehow forgot Rem was the one who rejected Subaru
@@BenersantheBreada lot of bad stuff sticks with Subaru, and the writing and plot twists progressively improve with each volume. It’s rare to get an excellent plot and characters to this degree. Honestly, the first volumes are entertaining, but compared to the rest of the series, it evolves so much. You shouldn’t care about fandoms try to enjoy it. And technically, it isn’t Groundhog Day. It’s an unreversible checkpoint system that makes every death count, this makes the reader afraid to have a new checkpoint as important characters could easily die.
To be fair Re Zero LNs kinda suck compared to WN, especially when you throw English translations into the mix. Not only are they slow, they are also kinda crap. Would prefer WN over LN any time.

I don't mean this in a condescending way or anything I'd just like to recommend you Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint (Korean Webnovel), which I think you'd consider a very interesting read! Also it's complete, I haven't finished it myself admittedly but I've heard a whole lot from its fans, so I thought of recommending it.
